@Count Istvan - Thank you for the cover scans. They aren't that bad. Better than nothing. Do you have any other LP cover scans you could post? I am just as crazy about the jacket art as I am about the music. I have nearly 4gb of soundtrack LP cover scans so if there is anything you would like just ask and if I have it you are welcome to it.

Someone asked me for:

Carly Simon - piglet's big movie soundtrack

There seems to have been a release in 2003?

Does anyone have info? Not for me, I try to make someone else happy here... :D

Count Istvan said...

@ GSW

I don't really have many LP covers scans, although I still have a lot of LPs, which I have kept because of the covers. I got Big Country done specially because it has always been a huge favorite of mine right from my early days of film music collecting. I think I must have bought every LP version from every country that ever released it, and re-released it, always in the hope that someone would come to their senses and include some of the music not on the original LP - like the Major's theme.

Great job! Thanks very much!

I'm just going out for dinner with friends. If no-one has posted those 2 tracks from GWTW by the time I get back, I'll do it then. They will be from the CDs. But I'm sure you won't have to wait that long.

GSW said...

@Count Istvan - I am very happy you liked the covers. I did not mean to give you the impression that I had been the one to repair them. My abilities to manipulate photos is very minimal. My friend Jim Quackenbush deserves all the thanks. He is a wizard with PhotoShop and has salvaged many of my cover scans. I will be sure to let him know how pleased you were with the results.

Hi,

I've recently discovered an old Thai/HK film called "So Close" that was released in 2002/2003.

I've enjoyed what I've seen so far, and see that there a soundtrack released, that can be found as a torrent which all the seed are "DEAD".

Does anyone have this this soundtrack.

Cheers

Count Istvan said...

@ GSW

My profound apologies! I obviously wasn't thinking straight before - probably too much of a hurry. I know I wrote GWTW, but when I went to pull the CDs out just now I realised I was thinking of, and reaching for, the 2-CD set of HTWWW. I don't have the 2-CD set of GWTW. If it's any consolation to you, in doing that I found another original cover scan you might be interested in if you haven't already got it, HTWWW. I'm guessing you've probably got that though...

I am a pretty adventurous soundtrack listener and, I like to think, pretty knowledgeable about films and film music.

I had a listen to Peter Schickele's Silent Running soundtrack recently. I'd heard this score before and first saw the movie when I was about 12. This time around listening though, I was particularly affected by two of the tracks: "Drifting" and "Tending to Huey". The delicacy and the nature of what they evoked...I imagine them both being in some contemplative road movie set in the Lost Coast area (very specific, but there you have it).

My question? I'm pretty "well-listened" but do any of you know of any particular soundtrack cues that are akin to those two on any album? I am scoring my own film and want to give my composer more references, and I want tracks pretty much exactly like those two.

@Robert - Thank you very much for the GWTW tracks. They are much appreciated.

@Count Istvan - Don't worry about it. Everybody makes mistakes. I wrote my friend Jim and he says that if you would like to scan your LPs he will be happy to stitch them together and clean them.

@Stealthman - I am extremely grateful that you went to all the trouble to help me which makes what I am about to say very difficult. Both of the tracks skip badly. At first I thought it might be my player but I played them on several different players and they skip with all of them. It is not the end of the world. Thank you for trying, that is what really counts.

Actually, I'm searching again for a rarity. This time for a fantastic little score from the 1970s:

La Isla Misteriosa Y El Capitán Nemo
aka
L'Île mystérieuse
aka
The Mysterious Island Of Captain Nemo

1973
Gianni Ferrio

Tsunami, 1997, 14 tracks

Just recently I discovered that it was actually released twice, on lp and on cd. The cd was six minutes longer. I would take both.

Does someone own this particular item?

Saundy

StealthMan said...

GSW: You are correct about the skipping. I did not listen as I was recording and hear them now. I did do the best I could to clean the surface with a Q-tip and a Discwasher but I failed to listen as it transferred.

I'm thinking I might be able to help you get your recording still. You have the LP and you seem to have a computer. What are you lacking to make the transfer? I'm guessing your computer is either non-private, or you lack a turntable, or lack recording software. If it is the latter, I can give you a trial copy of Goldwave, a tiny program that served me very well making transfers in the past, on my very, very old computer.

Would this help you?

I have the SPELLB... on the label you named on LP, but it will have to wait for transfer behind 2 others I have in progress.

Re: Goldwave has been running for many months on my old computer. I just remembered that as far as I've been able to determine, I can only produce .wav files on it. Will that be sufficient for you? If not, perhaps someone can recommend a (free?) way to convert to mp3.

I will post it before the weekend as well.

Re: turntable. If you're willing to try it out, I (and maybe others) can easily coach you through the few connector wires you'll have to have or get (not expensive, maybe at Radio Shack, probably available online), and help you figure out how to connect it to your computer. It's surprisingly simple, and if it's not beyond me, you can probably do it too.

GSW said...

@Trident - Thank you for the Rozsa.

@Stealthman - Wav files are OK. I can convert just about any audio file. I am going to put off connecting my turntable for the time being. I need to make sure it is still in working order and that the drive belt is still good. It has been sitting so long the drive felt may be rotted (it is a large rubber band) and if it is I will need to find a replacement. Can't afford a new turntable. All of this was why I wanted to know if the Goldwave software was still usable after the trial period.

Found a TV themes album in Vintage Vinyl, Top TV Themes '64, with the WB Orchestra conducted by Carl Brandt, containing the theme from The Lieutenant. A friend of mine (non-blogger) has been after that theme for years, and it's his birthday the day after tomorrow. The link is dead, so any chance at all of a re-up please?

Re: Mark Knopfler's COMFORT AND JOY three-track Vertigo EP vinyl release.
So, after grabbing your fine shares of the album I tracked down the vinyl EP at a local used music store, grabbed it and put it on the turntable. Listening, I was shocked at how mellow it sounded on vinyl, productionwise; seeming much more smoothly nocturnal. Then I realized, this EP was pressed not as 33 1/3 rpm but at 45 rpm, like a single. I'd accidentally played it at the wrong speed!

Those of you who have it on vinyl, try playing it at 33... It sounds more like an old detective movie score, especially track #1... Really beautiful! Amazing that Mark Knopfler's work is so great it even sounds terrific at the wrong rpm! :)

I was very happy to get the LP, thanks, especially as I never knew of its existence. I figured that was how the original must have been. In fact, after I posted my previous, a friend here told me he'd had that LP long ago, and he remembered that track being wrong. I filled it myself and weirdly enough, it has 13 tracks and the Mancini "Nightly News" track from the new Cd was #14, so I added it on and it makes a sweet closer to the album.

@StealthMan - The easiest way I know of to repair skips is to re-rip the LP with a nickel taped on top of the needle cartridge. Sounds crazy but it works. Pennies & dimes are to light, quarters are too heavy. Nickels just right. If a single nickel does not work, experiment with coin combinations.

@Sorei....I can try to rip the 2 disc Krull in FLAC, if you wanted....

Jon said...

I personally just convert all flac into high quality MP3 anyway :)

But, as far as I know, iTunes for PC can play flac (yet itunes for Mac cannot). There's also a great, simple freeware program called VLC which can play just about any music or movie file format you throw at it.

Yea, I just convert the FLAC I download anyway, as I usually play the music on a cheap lil mp3 player with headphones, or if it is a keeper, I will burn it to cd. Either way, the lossless is a hassle for me. I can try ripping the Super Tracks 2 disc Krull score by James Horner if anyone wants it. I am gonna re-rip it anyway @ 320. Just let me know.
