@isbum,

I know! I'M the one who'd written silly story about 'em back when they were Muppet Babies -- then I realized that while they did that... they've each done a leeeeetle bit more in life since that bizarre night.

@ chimezatmidnight -- I love your anecdotes/stories. You seem to have led an interesting theatrical life, so keep them coming.

Your daughter has good taste too - that Charles Busch doc is wonderful. I always regret that I didn't by a Vampire Lesbians of Sodom t-shirt when I had the chance.

Robert Alda was always my ideal Skye Masterson. But that seems too obvious a guess. It isn't Brando is it? Despite the weak vocals, I actually always thought he was a good Skye. And I thought when they did the all-Black version, Gregory Hines would have been perfect.

I have never seen a great Sister Sarah. I've often wondered if it's an impossible role, since everyone else is so colorful.

BTW, I uploaded the soundtrack for Newley's Hieronymous Merkin fro someone awhile ago, if anyone here is interested.

I'm getting a cable modem tomorrow, so I should be uploading much more quickly, which means a bunch of stuff will be coming this weekend, including that 320-kbps rip of Into the Woods.

stubbins said...

mindy,

It's always fun and weird and full of strange, strange voids packed with all kinds of oddnesses.

I'd LOVE that soundtrack.

Herman Raucher and Michel Legrand have sworn for years they will adapt THEIR original Sweet November into a musical... to fight the already forgotten remake and honor Newley...

And the story would work so well as a Legrand chamber piece.

But Legrand (like Blake Edwards and Bricusse) spends a little too much time up in Gstaad. And Gstaad is the deluxe version of the dark side of the moon.

It is possible to spend way too much time in Gstaad.

Herman was very happy with the Summer of '42 musical which got very good notices and happy audiences down on 14th Street -- but I think it was another casualty of 9/11 as it opened in January of 2002. No audience was really around to support it.

Now... is there a recording of the musical version of The King of Hearts?

It was part of Broadway's Gold-Plated Age of Don Scardino.

No unnecessary musical adaptation could not be mounted without him in it -- even Angel, considered by many to be the absolutely worst adaptation of (at least) its era, starred him.

I remember how in the NYT fluff pre-opening fluff fest about it, Fred Gwynne (FRED GWYNNE!)announced that "Scardino's a genius!"

My best guess is that this was just before Gwynne's comeback from Herman Muensterdom began with his Big Daddy -- Fred knew how to do publicity when he needed it. (Or when Al Lewis needed it for his Bleecker Street Italian restaurant, Grandpa -- Bella Gente")

Scardino's directed a lot of plays, too -- only one ran for more than a day or a few weeks and that was a rare monster of a mellerdrammer -- A Few Good Men.

His most recent disasterpiece was Lennon... which was in its Yoko Ono-monopaeic controlled way worse than the Johnny Cash musical, worse than the Elvis musical...

I (King of) Heart(s) Don Scardino!

mindy,

I'd bet Jo was a good Sister Sarah -- she'd be her uncle's niece all the way.

The family favorite Sky for years was Julius LaRosa with whom Jo toured a few times.

When I was a copywriter I sometimes wrote live copy for him to read on air at WNEW-AM. I used to walk it over there -- he is a very fine guy and a really artful singer. (I read once that his main voice teacher was Menotti.) For all you Giants fans I used to write live copy, too, for Dick Lynch -- also a very, very nice guy -- but no copy stayed "live" very long in Dick's mouth.

Though I have brought up the possibility of some guy who played Masterson in the second City Center revival in '65 -- I think his name was Orbach.

Anyone ever hear what became of him?

(His Nathan Detroit was Alan King. And the Nathan Detroit of the City Center '55 one would be my dream guy, Walter Matthau.)

Mindy said...

@ chimezatmidnight - I have a copy of King of Hearts (the musical), which I'll add to my uploads. As well as Hieronymous Merken.

I have to admit I know about Julius LaRosa more from reputation (the firing) and Jerry Lewis Telethons than having any real memory/picture of him.
Now Jerry Orbach seems perfect. I had no idea he'd ever played Sky. Is there a recording of that production somewhere? I would love that.

stubbins said...

mindy,

When Jean Dalrymple ran The Light Opera Company of City Center there were many good productions... but, as far as I know, very few recordings.

These were all limited runs and they generally had two plays in repertory.

I remember when I moved back to New York from LA at age seven we went there three times the first two couple of years.

First was an H.M.S. Pinafore with Robert Roundsville as Ralph Rackstraw.

Second was a topic from earlier today -- The Most Happy Fella with Art Lund (which was a revival of their 1959 revival -- Norman Atkins was Tony and Jack De Leon was Herman in both as well).

Third was an Oklahoma with an over eager pre-TV John Davidson as Curly. What I remember about it best was that Ali Hakim was Jules Munshin... who I know from watching Sunday afternoon movies on Channel 5.

By the time we were back the big deal in revivals were Richard Rodgers' Music Theater of Lincoln Center. THOSE got the recordings, all on RCA. (Darren McGavin! The King and I!)

stubbins said...

@mindy,

The one City Center production I remember which was recorded was their 1960 (I think) Finian's Rainbow with the Bronx's own Howard Morris as Ogg.

stubbins said...

One more request...

As I love the cast (and like Harold Rome -- and love Howard da Silva)...

Does anyone have The Zulu and the Zayda?

Menasha Skulnik forever! (Lou Gossett, too -- eventually he would remake this for the movies with Dennis Quaid as an every so slightly adjusted The Hermaphroditic Reptile Man and the Texan.)

Mindy said...

I'll add Zulu & the Zayda to this weekend's upload list. I enjoyed listening to it very much.

Who knows what other odd treasures might find their way here once it doesn't take me 35 min. to upload a single album!

David79801 said...

@Mindy -- so grateful for HENRY! Thanks millions.

More impossible requests:
THE MIKADO with Groucho Marx (TV version)
TUSCALOOSA'S CALLING ME (an off Bwy show from the 70s with a terrific score)

Dr Dolittle was posted before I got to it, so I will check my collection and see what I have -- tommorrow --

Here's another challenging request:

Another cast album for "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown". This one was for the TV version done by the Hallmark Hall Of Fame.

Here's one that's on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/SEALED-SOUNDTRACK-YOURE-A-GOOD-MAN-CHARLIE-BROWN-1972_W0QQitemZ310021387834QQcmdZViewItem

Hieronymous Merken OST http://www.sendspace.com/file/lb53r3

The Zulu & the Zayda OBC http://www.sendspace.com/file/o3cx8y

Unfortunately I don't have any of the other new requests, but Groucho in The Mikado certainly sounds fun.

And TUSCALOOSA'S CALLING ME is on my wishlist too.

I think I have about every version of Charlie Brown except that one. Hope somebody has it.

stubbins said...

mindy,

Thank you! It's all so appreciated (and I copy everything I download from you and store it -- respect for you makes me a preservationist).

I'll download those after I can get my body to get out of touch with its inner childkiller.

I had the Groucho Mikado on (I think) a CBS Special Products (always the industry's sexiest label) LP.

He's fun and funny, Traubel's great.

However... if anyone would like it... I can offer Sir Charles Mackerras' excellent (dialogue-free) Mikado.

My fave Mikado? Oh, the remarkable late thirties movie version with a dazzling Martyn Green Koko and an excellent everyone else from the D'Oyly Carte pros to a really charming, funny Kenny Baker as Nanki-Poo.

stubbins said...

@mindy,

My happy thought for the day is that you have every other soundtrack of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. (Even the animated soundtrack?)

Now... do you have The Sherman Brothers' wonderful Snoopy Come Home? We love 'em all here, especially "It Changes".

Such a great combination of story, script, characters and songs -- I'm amazed that it seems to never get broadcast. (And as the DVD is out, I wouldn't think there's a rights issue anywhere -- just programmers having an empty dogfood dish for brains.)

@rodtross - thanks so much for the Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public (yeah!) and the Sunset Blvd. compilation.

I feel awful, I've been so lax this week about posting or writing here. Somehow I failed to realize that getting high-speed cable and internet would be so distracting and time-consuming.

Now that I can download things in minutes instead of half hours or more, I've been going a bit crazy. Hoping to get back to normal soon.

One thing I was wondering about today - I just listened to Man of La Mancha with Brian Stokes Mitchell. I seem to recall this production getting negative reviews and wondered if anyone remembered why? I think Stokes Mitchell sounds marvelous.

@rodtross - thanks for the Taffetas - not familiar with that one. I do have both versions of Forever Plaid and Beehive (did someone finally post that here too?).

And I agree with you about Witches of Eastwick. I enjoyed the album tremendously - don't know why it never made it to Broadway. Maybe too expensive these days?

@chimezatmidnight. Geez, I don't even remember Brian Stokes Mitchell on Trapper John. I do recall him on Frazier and used very poorly on (cough, cough) Crossing Jordan.

I have to admit to a bit of a crush on him, but I never thought TV quite knew what to do with him. They seem to always cast him as a pompous jerk.

But that's true with many Broadway stars. I think Orbach and Lithgow are the exceptions. I can't even count the number of bad TV shows Donna Murphy's been in, and Nathan Lane never really has become as big a movie/TV star as Broadway.
And don't even get my started on how the glorious Audra McDonald is wasted on TV.

stubbins said...

mindy,

You have excellent taste.

He played Jackpot Jackson. Yes -- this show on the worst names ever on TV.

I will say that Kelsey Grammer (who has not gotten even decent reviews on Broadway until this one) got very good to excellent reviews on his variation-on-Frasier Henry Higgins to the amazing Kelly O'Hare's Eliza at the NYP's My Fair Lady.

How did he become Frasier?

He was in the workshop of the one act version of Sunday in the Park with George -- Patinkin was and is his close friend and told him about an audition for a part on Cheers, etc.

Now... who emerged from TV to become a REAL Broadway performer (and not just somebody with a high Q rating who gets hired to bring in the tourists) is David Hyde Pierce.

Gregory Harrison turned out to be pretty good, too.

isbum,

Thanks. I have not been feeling fun or funny. Except for when the dog comes along to smile...

Two, two, two treats in one dept.:

Weill/I. Gershwin: Lady In The Dark

1) Rise Stevens, John Reardon, Adolph Greene | Lehman Engel, Studio Orch.

2) Danny Kaye | Maurice Abravanel, Studio Orch.

Part one is a very good performance and Adolph Greene is as wonderful as Eliza's Chauffeur (et al -- hi Al!) as he would be as Pangloss and Martin on Bernstein's Candide concert recording.

Part two... well, here are the 78's Danny Kaye recording as part of his rapid ascent to stardom after Lady in the Dark opened... but were not part of the Gertrude Lawrence recording (which I think was on Decca -- these were on Columbia).

Kaye sings much of his material -- along with Eliza's One Life To Live, Jenny and My Ship, all wonderfully with the first at a lightly swingin' tempo.

This is the same excellent translation that was performed on Broadway (and on the Tony Awards) many years ago... and starred Meryl Streep -- and Tony, Zito, the fellow who played the Sergeant in the Public Theater Pirates of Penzance, playsed the Governor (which Peter Lorre created).

This is the most enjoyable, theatrical and musical version of Happy End on record.

(And a nice complement to all those Guys and Dolls recordings people here have posted as this was the FIRST Salvation Army girl meets-and-falls-for-hoodlum musical!)

@ mindy - Thank you so much for your many troubles in getting me 'Into the Woods' @320 kb/s. Haven't got the chance to listen to it yet, I'm sure it'll sound as good as a clearance in the forest :-)

Your Rage [i.e. your requesting 'Rage of the Heart'] is queuing up! :-) I fell into my habitual inclination to scan a few booklets, a fact that slows down my uploading music. :-(

Anyway, while you wait for both, here's a tiny bit of background info and relevant links:

In late 1980s EMI was willing to invest $2 millions in recording this project! Garzilli, his agent and/or their advisers opted for the F1rst N1ght Records (the disc's catalogue number is simply ROLECD1! — the exclamation mark is mine). David Cullen, Andrew Lloyd Webber's orchestrator, was ambitiously called in to take charge. He undertook, as he did, to orchestrate and produce the album.

This original disc has 26 tracks, and runs for 75 minutes. I cannot check, but it seems that the CD which is sold today lacks the liner notes. For a *very* detailed track listing and customers' reviews, visit http://www.amazon.com/Rage-Heart-1987-London-Concept/dp/B000024TXE

I found out that there's a new recording [Selections(!)] of 11 tracks, 34 minutes — indicating a possible commercial conflict with Mr Cullen?... Not an improvement, I'm afraid, with the exception of an added piece ("Miserere" that I've included as a bonus track) and the singer Keara Donohoe. For comparison I've gathered here together all these 11 excerpts http://rapidshare.com/files/112039274/Rage.Select.rar

@ filmpac - Thanks a lot for sharing, also at Sallie & Mel's.

@ Riddim1903 - Special thanks for having uploaded Chess and Kismet at a high bitrate. BUT, my friend...
Though you took care to split the latter's download-link – helping people who may not know "how to" do it – your forgot to add the extension rar after "Drake." [First I had tried to add "html".] Here's again your Kismet - featuring Alfred Drake link, in one single row
http://rapidshare.com/files/111490022/KISMET_w._A._Drake.rar

@ quinlan - Thank you for all the magnificent work(s) you do and share. Sadly, for instance I for one, won't be able to visit either your Jazz or Rocket's Vinyl palaces — time and set priorities prohibit this. I first came at Franklynot for the soundtracks, but now weeks go by without even having a quick glance at what's on offer there :-(

@ rocket from mars - The same (as my mssg to Q) goes for you. I do say 'Thanks' for your vinyl "transfers" [pun intented] to Sallie & Mel's.

@ isbum - Maybe by writing in bold I might eventually draw your attention?
I wouldn't want to acquire another little frustration, which will be a mystery to you ;-)
Please, read my message addressed to Your Major-ness here:
· April 27, 2008 5:22 AM - in general, but also for Transit's offers of "March of the Falsettos"
and "Falsettoland".
[O.K., if the above has not convinced you to act, I fall on my virtual knees then:] Would you please, at some time, post the "High Button Shoes" OBC? I can guarantee you a minimum of 1 (one) download.

By the way — and I seem to remember saying something similar to you, many months ago: Every second commend of yours is like a "Spirits Up!" injection to my system; I'm referring mainly to your May 2, 2008 1:32 PM at Sallie & Mel's now, about Detroit's defect automobiles and Quinlan's wrongly distributed LP sides. (I've been luckier than him once, but stupid enough to break to pieces and throw away my unique collector's item: A virgin, non-pressed LP with already glued labels!) Bless you isbum for making me laugh...

@ Mindy - It looks like I took my time, or was teasing you. ;-(

Finally, here's the...

Rage of the Heart by Enrico Garzilli (@320). Booklet scans included.

Part 1
http://rapidshare.com/files/112036540/Rage.1.rar

Part 2
http://rapidshare.com/files/111796469/Rage.2.rar

Advertised as “From Pop Rock to Contemporary Classical, the musical drama Rage of the Heart, based on the true story of the lives of Abelard and Heloise, expresses the depth of passion of these 12th century lovers.”

I may be spoiled but there's very little in this music's treatment that I would label it as being Classical, let alone 'Contemporary Classical'... So, fear not!

PS _ As I mentioned in my previous message to you, I have included Garzilli's radio interview and – from there – I have lifted the new track Miserere (in mono), which I have added at the end as a 'bonus'.

PPS _ I hope that your migraines aren't something chronic and recurring; are they?

di(aphanous said...

@ Mel - Have been listening to the mp3 Party, now. I noticed some mini gaps of a fraction of a second between tracks (applause), when I play it back through Microsoft MediaPlayer. All transitions go smoothly when I use WinAmp, but I do worry! This phenomenon may be due to my over-fragmented hard drive (I claim to always make perfect CD rips).

I'll defrag my HDD later tonight, and see what happens then. But, please check this Party yourself, too.

I sat back after reading the gleeful remarks of thanks and said to myself,
"Look at Mel. He's having one of those weekends where everybody is posting music he loves."

And Mel, I love it when that happens. :)

Please take your time with the others - I'm not in any hurry.

A Stop The Press warning for Comden & Green's Party :

The detected tiny gaps (of about 1/1000th of a second) ARE real and, to my ears, very disturbing.

I am deleting the relevant post, and shall make a new upload! Apologies to those who've already downloaded that rip.
___

@ Mel, the reason than WinAmp is fooling the listener is due to its built-in micro-fade ability.

When during playback in MS MediaPlayer one clicks the II pause button, the sound is cut sharply. WinAmp on the other hand allows it to continue for a second or so, while quickly fades it out!

I often wonder if my still reasonably intact good hearing is a blessing or a curse. Like a high-end audio system that reveals sound recording flaws...

@ Mel - About “A Party With...”:
Yes, for me too, it was a joy to listen to such talented creators after so many years. It's a shame that due to record companies' stingy commercial policies of that era (exploiting the known short duration of LPs), there isn't more such material available. As most of those Comden & Green shows *were* taped then – but only a limited selection has ended up on record,– I hope for a new, 'extended' edition (with a few "previously unreleased" extras).

Myself, I had forgotten what a wonderful musical-actress and singer Betty Comden was. I has only remembered her from some rare concert appearances, in later years, that I was pretty lucky to have watched on TV.

@ di(aphanous - thanks so much for Rage In Heaven plus all the amazing extras! I've listened to must of it so far and it's very interesting.

It's not quite my taste (I'm more a Comden & Green, Boys from Syracuse, My Fair Lady kind of gal than the faux operatic style - Phantom, Les Miz, Jeckyll & Hyde etc.) but I do like checking them out and there's always something to enjoy.

I'm afraid the migraines are a regular problem, part of a larger chronic autoimmune condition that ebbs and flows. I have meds that control them, but for some reason the computer screen seems to completely negate the drugs effectiveness.

One of the reasons I've never started my own Broadway blog is because my health problems make any sort of consistancy difficult, as evidenced by my rabid start here and recent drop off.

If I'm lucky these days, I have the energy to check the posts here daily and possibly download something, but writing or uploading takes a lot more effort.

Thanks again for the upload. Hope to be back in full force soon.

Wondering if anyone here knows anything about Jule Styne's The Red Shoes? I assume an adaptation of the Powell ballet film?

I was just reading an article in the WSJ about Glory Days closing after one night Tuesday and all the other short-lived musicals mentioned yielded recordings if not official cast albums: (Dance a Little Closer; 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.; The Yearling; Anyone Can Whistle; Merrily We Roll Along; and Nick & Nora)

I checked on castalbums.org and didn't find any lsiting for the Red Shoes, which made me curious.
Anyone got info about it?

Also to whomever it was besides me who asked about Harry Chapin's Cotton Patch Gospel, I should have my hands on it in the next week or so.

@ isbum - thanks for the concern and I'll definitely look through my wishlist for obscure Bway albums and let you know.

I have everything on a PDA for when I go browsing, otherwise my collection is so big I'll forget and end up with a 2nd or 3rd copy of something.

di(aphanous said...

@ Mindy - Your second paragraph finds me totally in agreement with you. When as a younger person I led a better scheduled life, with more time and money to spend, I was more adventurous: three or four different performances of the same classical piece, LPs and CDs that I'd buy because of an image or a couple of phrases on the sleeve, also forcing myself to learn to at least try to appreciate "unusual" things, etc. It was a rewarding period, and its long over now. I still remain inquisitive, interested and curious, but less impulsive and more moderate.

...

According to an ex-pharmacologist and presently psychotherapist friend of mine (who's almost cured of migraines now, after decades of suffering), you would do well to visit a good osteopath and/or a proficient acupuncturist. In her words, doctors call it a "chronic condition", simply because they're unable to pin-point the cause. An osteopath's treatment may result in those "ebbs and flows" of yours to become increasingly rare and, also, to be less painful — apart from having them last for a shorter period of time... But, maybe, you do know AND have done all this already?

PS. My friend keeps to a minimum either be sitting in front of a computer, or watching TV. She claims that migraine patients are more than average sensitive and receptive to their weak stroboscopic effects, even if the electronic image may refresh itself as many as 70 times a second!!! Therefore you should take long pauses, between short periods at watching the screen. On the other hand, she has no problem going to the cinemas ;-) - Anyway, take care!

PS2 - Thanks for the tip on Danny Kaye.

@ I.B. Fane's Son - Well done, my boy! Hope that you'll have more opportunities coming your way to shine on stage. Such luck, to be blessed with enough talent to go through life singing and dancing! [Fortunate are the parents, too!]

@ isbum - Thanks for having the best reason to refer us to the Time article — very interesting, beyond the strictly 'musical' aspects of it...

@ isbum + Sallie - The modem off/on trick works every time, but only if you're having a so-called "dynamic" IP address. In other words, when your Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns a different set of numbers to your PC, each time you make a new connection with the web!

Yep, those darn migraines continue. Acupuncture is starting to sound appealing, I may indeed look into it.

@isbum & I.B. Fane - I'd already read that article in Time magazine before I knew there was a connection. Very cool.

I'm impressed that kids today are doing Rent in high school. I'm old enough to remember when Godspell was controversial. The riskiest thing we did was Sweet Charity!

While I applaud the daring choices, part of me wishes that HS theatre would be the place to introduce kids to the classic musicals too.

@lvactor - thanks for the A Little Night Music OST. Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but I'm excited. Does Liz sing or is she dubbed? This must really be a horrible film version because they never show it on TV and I have about every pay movie channel available.

@mel - thanks for thanking lvactor for me & I hope to make it back over to your place soon too.

Mindy said...

@all - finally a gift I promised awhile back. Harry Chapin's Cotton Patch Gospel. The recording is good not great. Not sure if it's an LP rip or remaster:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/lo76bh

It got me wondering why so few "modern" - post 50's - pop composers have had any luck with the Broadway musical form.
I guess Elton John's been the most successful, but frankly I like his solo work much better than his Disneyesque musicals.

Roger Miller did a great job with Big River, which you can get here if you aren't familiar with this rollicking version of Huck Finn:
http://rapidshare.com/files/113799537/BR.rar

And Rupert Holmes did OK with Edwin Drood:
http://rapidshare.com/files/96860473/drood.part1.rar
http://rapidshare.com/files/96860570/drood.part2.rar

But Paul Simon's Capeman and Barry Manilow's efforts like Copacabana (http://rapidshare.com/files/102512817/copa.rar) haven't received much praise.

I always though Billy Joel, Elvis Costello, Randy Newman maybe Lyle Lovett should give it a try.

Am I overlooking anyone (not counting jukebox musicals)? Is there any musical fitting this category anyone would like to post/request?

Online friend LesserDevil hooked me up with this, and has kindly allowed it to be shared here too. This is about as "off" Broadway as you can get...

"Debbie Does Dallas, The Musical" (2002), @320:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CIVGU45I

This performance of the show opened on October 29th, 2002, at the Jane Street Theatre NYC.

Wikipedia: Unlike the original movie, the musical did not contain any actual sex or nudity, which caused some disappointment among people, as false hype had been made and the musical's producers did nothing to dismiss it. Since then, the show has been performed around the world, often with racier direction and more explicit choreography. The story, dialogue and characters are fairly faithful to the original film, with musical numbers standing in for sex scenes or added for comic effect.

Hoping someone gets a kick outta this, go Debbie go! Rah rah rah!

Tony Awards this Sunday.

Can A Chorus Line be the one singular sensation?

Will Sweeney Todd devour the competition?

Or will Cry Baby be Passing Strange In The Heights to Xanadu?

What are your thoughts?

Mindy said...

@ transit - I thought the Chorus Line revival and Sweeney Todd were a year or two ago.

Without having actually seen anything, just based on soundtracks, clips and "buzz," I'd guess Passing Strange (although it doesn't seem very "road friendly" but then neither does In the Heights).

South Pacific best revival. Of course, Patti for Gypsy (unless she's just pissed off too many people!). No idea for actor - maybe the opera guy from South Pacific. He got raves.

I do know where I'm going to be this Sunday night though. As big a movie fan as I am, the Tonys always have been my favorite awards show. Heck I even used to watch the "boring" part on PBS.

For those curious about the nominees - the ever wonderful (and very popular) thesingingstage.com has posted demos and in some cases full soundtracks of most, if not all, the major nominees. So listen, then go buy!

Or in the case of Gypsy - pre-order! What the heck are they waiting for.

A shop link list is now available in the space where the usual Original Incredible Filmscorium monthly list is hosted.
The new list is up to date as of June 11, 2008 approximately middle of the day, depending where you're residing.
As you will see each shop has its own sheet build up the same way as the monthly list.
For some shops, such as "Golden Age Of Hollywood" or "Classical Music Hall", instead of one column for the artist, I have included one column for the composer(s) and another one for the performer(s) when one or the other information was available. This is increasing the research possibilities.
Otherwise, please refer to the main sheet explanation; it works the same way.
From now on the shop link list will be regularly updated and published on a monthly basis at the same time as the usual Filmscorium list. So you will be able to download both lists from the same space (click on "Quinlan's Monthly Excel Archive Spreadsheet".
If you discover an error or something wrong in the new list, please don't hesitate to comment.
All suggestions are welcome.

Problem is, whenever anyone posts anything out of the usual on any blog, its quickly seems to find its way onto The Singing Stage site.

Fortunes of war, I guess...

Sure Mel. I suppose they're giving credit to the original uploaders then?

@ transit - Oh my, Zombies is just, um, er... different! A worthy raise indeedy. Thanks for hauling me out of the muck there, I was seriously concerned it was something I'd done, lowering the tone of the room and all. I note that "Brain From Planet X" does not reside on The Singing Stage, so I might still give it a post, just as soon as someone pops back in.

@ buster - Indeed, it is a shame to see your hard work go uncredited. Please accept my belated thanks for the movie related items on your fine blog, some great stuff indeed. Keep up the good work!

So - thoughts on the Tony Awards? In general, I enjoyed it a lot.

The musicals that came off the worst were the ones that got few nominations (Little Mermaid, A Catered Affair & Young Frankenstein). Faith Prince sounded awful and I usually love her. And I thought Megan Mullaly was a good choice for the Madelaine Kahn role in Young Frankenstein, but after that scene it just seems obvious that nobody can beat the original.

Patti of course brought the house down - or in this case to their feet -and deservedly so. I would have liked to see more of Boyd Gaines and Laura Bennatti since they also won. I still remember seeing Patti do A New Argentina on the Tonys 28 years ago - it was electric.

I thought Passing Strange and In the Heights were great. They really made me want to see the shows. Cry-Baby and Xanadu looked fun and campy. The number from Grease was awful - I would have rather seen Barry Bostwick sing the whole thing.

South Pacific looked good. I can see why Szot has gotten raves. Less so with Kelli O'Hara. I felt the same way whenever I saw numbers from Pajama Game. She's cute and has a nice voice but no personality.

Enjoyed the couple from Sunday in the Park very much and would have loved to see more. I was, however, disappointed by the choice. I remember when the original was on the Tonys and how incredible it was when they did the Act 1 close that becomes the painting. Amazing. And you'd think the technology they use now would have made it easier.

The Rent tribute was sentimental but I liked it.

Still the best award show on TV!

@ transit & filmpac -- thanks for Debbie Does Dallas, Zombies from Beyond & the promise of Brain From Planet X. I'll try to post Zombie Prom one of these days.

You never know - who would think Little Shop of Horrors would turn out to be a "classic."

Since my last attempt to get some dialogue/postings going didn't get any response (pop composers), I thought I'd try again after being inspired by the previous posts.

Anyone else want to post/request musicals based on the least likely source material?

Mindy said...

A second attempt to get some dialogue flowing inspired by the Tony Awards. I read a pre-Tony article where actors were asked what show inspired them to want to be in theatre. Several mentioned "How to Succeed in Business..."

So what show first inspired your love of musical theatre?

It's hard for me to pinpoint since my dad was an actor/director. (I'm named after a character in Inherit the Wind which he was doing right before my birth.)
But I remember very clearly when I was 6-7 going with him to rehearsals for Guys & Dolls and just loving it. Of course, I had a "crush" on the guy playing Benny Southstreet, which probably helped.

I'm pretty sure that solidified my love of musicals.

@Mindy:

That’s easy. A Chorus Line. My first awareness of the show was high school. We were playing selections from he show during one of our performances, and a got to hear some of the songs. My mother liked “What I Did For Love” and predicted that the show would do well at award time. We watched the Tony’s that year and I got to see them dance. It was cool. I was hooked. (I owed the cast album on every format from 8-track to iPod).

Out in Burbank, CA there was a 99-seat theater called The Golden Theater, and the first show was A Chorus Line (Guaranteed money maker and relatively inexpensive to produce). I sat and watched and fell in love with theater there and then. Paul’s monologue ripped my heart out every time I heard it (later I used a trimmed down version for my monologue when I went out on auditions). I actually went back and saw it some 20+ times. (Yes, I am fanatical).

Then I saw the movie. The opening was visually impressive, the dancing was fantastic, but the rest was crap. Take the focus off the dancers and make it a love story between Zach and Cassie. Kill Paul’s monologue, change the focus of “What I Did For Love.” Yech!!

When Isbum celebrated his first year of sobriety, we went to San Francisco to celebrate (and also because they were prepping A Chorus Line for Broadway). The show was wonderful – although the pacing was way too quick (we attended a preview performance so I hope they fixed that problem). I enjoyed it, though Isbum kept looking at his program to see how far we were from the end of the show.

I was happy they were nominated, but disappointed that they lost. Then I heard that Mario Lopez took over the role of Zach. That confused me. I think he’s too young. But then I heard that he demanded he be on stage during “Music and The Mirror,” and that he be front and center (usurping Paul – the show’s emotional center) in the “One” finale. Blech!! (Knowing this I growled at my TV when Whoopi did the Chorus Line spoof with him in it).

Anyway. That opened me up to a whole new experience and, at the risk of sounding corny, helped me define who I am. While I can’t sing or dance (not that that stops me), I do love watching others do it. On occasion, at the spur of a moment, I’ll take a song and re-work the lyrics to suit what is happening to me at any point in time (singing ABBA’s “Honey, Honey” in a supermarket with a squeezable Sue-bee honey bear in my hand).

This concludes my essay :)

Izbum said...

Regarding the Tony’s:

I don’t know what it is about David Letterman. Here is a list of shows that he had perform on his show.

Wicked, Hairspray, Spring Awakening, South Pacific. Notice a pattern?

Overall, I was not that impressed with the shows currently out there, and quite often I am more interested in the shows that did not get nominated – I love Legally Blonde and Little Women.

Transit cut it short. He has to go watch tonights WWE Wrestling.

Then "All My Children".

Knowing him, he'll cry during the wrestling and jump on the couch during the soap opera! ;)

Mindy said...

@ isbum & transit - if transit is watching All My Children, he probably is jumping on the couch. I frequently want to throw things at the TV when it's on:)
Ah the dirty soap habit my mom infected me with when I was a mere babe. I have watched ABC soaps literally all my life "thanks" to her.

I was going to upload a recent present I got soon anyhow, but transit's love of Chorus Line makes it even more imperative.
It's a revue from 1983 called Upstairs at O'Neals and one of the songs is "Something" sung by Mr. Karp. Hilarious. A must-hear for all Chorus Line fanatics. I'll try to post it Friday when I have more time.

Isbum said...

Has anyone here seen di(aphanous around?

He seems to have vanished. :(

Mindy said...

@ isbum & all - I know there has been some sore feeling here about singing stage lately, but I wanted to let everyone here know that I now realize why I love both sites:

Singing Stage is great for just downloading musicals you don't have or didn't even know existed.
But when it comes to information, discussion and - dare I say it - taste - nothing beats Broadway Bound!

This was brought home clearly to me the other night when I scanned SS's new "instant chat"board, where several people were actually saying that Sondheim "sucks" and isn't nearly as great as - cough, cough - Frank Wildhorn!!
I wanted to cry.

So thanks isbum for providing such a civilized refuge.

Isbum said...

@ Mindy - From the first post here:

Hello everybody! Just a word before we get started..
three things will get your post removed.
1. Complaining
2. Being Negative or Rude
3. Your Name is Greg

#3 was taken care of, but the first 2 are seriously enforced.

Nothing ruins the fun like someone barking "can't stand" or "hate" any type of music. We don't cotton to complainers.
Their's no point to it and I don't care what anybody doesn't like.

It's simple. If you downloaded something and it stinks... hit "delete" and it won't bother you any more.

As to S.S., I wish them only good things. The persons running it are in the learning stage. I'm sure they'll see the advantages of crediting original uploaders whenever possible. Minor bump for them.

Hello, posting this little note of mine only here.

Nobody should worry, I simply *need to* become an “absentee” myself — hopefully not for too long a while :-)

Thanks, everybody, for all your words and music you have shared.
___

P.S. No doubt about it... a Civilized Refuge it is indeed!
___

P.P.S. Not wanting to "ruin the fun", as isbum puts it, I have kept to myself a year-long suspicion that the infamous Greg is still around and among us (?!?)
But, obviously, people *can* and *do* change. And this person plays very innocent games, now, under a new identity. [I used to check "its" postings, from time to time.]
Has IsbumsPlace tone, and group of friends, anything to do with that transformation (if I am right)? Definitely! Therefore isbum seems to run the gentlest "correctional facility" in the whole blogosphere.

Oh, by the way, I don't know if I should be happier in case the person in question is *not* my suspected Greg!

"Singing Stage is great for just downloading musicals you don't have or didn't even know existed."

I have to agree with you. I have found descent recording of Carrie The Musical (I love it, I don’t understand why the critics didn’t). As well as a couple of shows I was iffy about (and in many cases, am glad I didn’t buy).

I came across a wonderful surprised “The Wayside Inn.” Bland cover, could not find any information on the show. Still don’t know why I downloaded it, but after my first listening of it, I fell in love with the melodies and lyrics. I get the sense of the story and the characters.

I am also enjoying listening to the demos of shows that I like. Even when they are just the composer (writer or whoever) singing to a lone piano. I like listening to the lyrics and occasionally (Check out the last track on the Little Shop of Horrors demo) I get a song that is not in the show that I totally enjoy.

I look forward to listening to Upstairs at O'Neals. You have intrigued me with your post.

Isbum said...

@ di(aphanous - Wonderful to know all is well, even in a self imposed exile. ;)

Does the new & improved Greg carry a picture of Boris Karloff from Bogdonovich's "Target"?

Just point him out and I'll start removing his posts.

di(aphanous said...

@ isbum - Staight answer, no... No Boris!

Could not remember a "picture", so you made me visit the Filmscorium (after a 2-month avoidance) and, guess what ? – Chance has it that the one irresistible OST I was compelled to get came from you! Loved the movie, grateful to have its soundtrack: Thanks, my friend, for the "Touch of Evil".

Mindy said...

@ transit & anyone else interested. Here finally is the upload for Upstairs at O'Neals.

http://sharebee.com/23286615

This 1983 cabaret show was presented and partly written by Martin Charnin of Annie fame at O'Neals, a showbiz hangout in Manhattan. Kind of like Sardi's but less touristy. I was there once eons ago, but I believe it no longer exists.

As I wrote previously, the song Something is a must listen for all Chorus Line fans.
Most of the songs are quite charming - if sometimes a bit dated (Cancun, for example).

The cast member most famous now is Bebe Neuwirth, although this was before she'd gained fame in the revival of Sweet Charity etc.

The recording is at 160kbps. Full cast and composer info is tagged on songs. I'd be happy to provide any more information to anyone with a question.

Hope you enjoy!

@ transit - Singing Stage had some problems yesterday with a letter from Dramatists Play Service requesting a bunch of stuff be taken down, threatening action etc. so that's why it is private for the moment.

There were a few more today from some other copyright holders.
I'll try to find out how you can get invited to join etc.

In the meantime I can report a bit on what's posted each day. Today was mostly the Capitol Sings series and a bunch of solo albums by David Campbell of Sunset Blvd.

Hey all. First time posting here. Found your blog via the links on SingingStage.

Update on SingingStage: according to a message on his facebook page, he's making it private and can only allow in 100 readers. He took down the forum he had as well.

On the one hand, I understand why he acted so quickly...it would appear that he got more than one take-down order. On the other hand, I wonder if he didn't overreact a little.

Not to mention versions of shows from other countries. Things that we can't get here.

Oh, Well. All the best to the owner and hope to see the site again soon.

@ dnapdx - here are the two Cryer/Ford ones I had. Shelter would still be a nice addition.

1970s Last Sweet Days of Isaac http://sharebee.com/fe0ae5f5

1967s Now Is the Time for All Good Men http://sharebee.com/b4bd73d7

This is a '60s anti-war musical written by two women in their 30s, Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford. Two seasons later they wrote the off-Broadway smash THE LAST SWEET DAYS OF ISAAC and two years later became the first female composer-lyricist team to have a show produced on Broadway with SHELTER - a revised version of ISAAC. A few years later in 1978, they wrote the long-running I'M GETTING MY ACT TOGETHER AND I'M TAKING IT ON THE ROAD.

Sadly, I think, since then the only shows they've done are two "American Girls" musicals based on the popular dolls.

Are they the only female Broadway composing team? Once again, me trying to get some action going on this board - who are your favorite female Broadway composers?

In Fact, as a bonus, here's one of mine. Dorothy Fields.

Isbum said...

@ mindy - I admire your efforts to liven up the place! Thanks!

Here's something I haven't shared in a long time.

"The Film of the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Marat/Sade (1967) is considered a classic avant garde 1960's drama in the style known as "Theatre of Cruelty". It is often shown to university level theatre classes because it has wonderful examples of both Artaud and Brecht theatre styles in it. I show it to my classes and it never fails to blow their undergraduate minds. It stars Glenda Jackson as Charlotte Corday (now Dame Glenda Jackson, MP), Ian Richardson (of "House of Cards" fame) as Marat, and Patrick Magee (Clockwork Orange) as de Sade."

"Marat/Sade" (1967) Lp @320

Bloody good show! ;)

Mindy said...

@ isbum - I love Marat/Sade. It is indeed mind-blowing. Good for you for showing it to all those eager young minds - at least I hope they are still eager.

The first theatrical production I remember having that effect on me was a Richard Foreman show (Penguin Tocquet) at the Public when I was about 13-14. Having a dad who taught theatre/directed, I was used to most things but that.....!

And interesting that you mention Patrick Magee (Clockwork Orange), because that was the first film to leave me confused, bewildered, excited and mouth agape at roughly the same age. Naively, I thought reading the novel would clarify things.

@ dnapdx - haven't seen any of the American Girl musicals, but I do have the album of one - Circle of Friends. I'll try to post it after Raisin.

Frankly, I don't remember what it sounds like. It's possible I haven't listened to it yet.

For those of you familiar with Josh Whedon and his famous Buffy The Vampire Slayer musical episode “Once More With Feeling,” the man is now taking a talents and applying them to the Superhero genre.

From Ain’t It Cool News:

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog is a musical about a mean, muscular superhero who keeps beating up a far less muscular aspiring evil mastermind.

Directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by the Whedon Bros. and this girl who apparently really likes one of the Whedon Bros., “Dr. Horrible” stars Neil Patrick Harris (“Starship Troopers”), Nathan Fillion (“Desperate Housewives”) and supercute Felicia Day (who played a vampire slayer not named Buffy on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”).

I actually found a great example of what I am looking for.

This song is sassy - humorous - uptempo - funny - cool lyrics. It has all the ingredients for a great shownumber. I am looking for similar stuff.

So... if you guys have any suggestions for other examples for good shownumbers I would highly appreciate the help.

Thank so much in advance =)

@ dnapdx - since someone on another site got around to posting it before I did, here's a link for Raisin:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/j80ylz

This is a very worthy download for anyone who doesn't already have it. A musical version of Raisin in the Sun from 1973 starring Joe Morton, Ted Ross, Ernestine Jackson and a very young Debbie Allen among others.

The composer's only other show appears to be Little Ham (which I also like) based on the works of Langston Hughes.

Thanks to the original poster NellieB.

soulbrotha said...

Thank you for that Raisin, Mindy.

Would you happen to have the all-Black cast version of Guys & Dolls?

Mindy said...

@ soulbrotha - I actually have 2 versions of Guys & Dolls that might be of interest. One with Maurice Hines and one with Robert Guillaume & Ernestine Jackson (of Raisin).

I'll post them soon. I also already was planning on posting Catch My Soul OLC:

http://sharebee.com/573aa4f9

which seems to be a "soul" version of Othello. Very interesting.
There apparently also is a film version starring Richie Havens that I was desperately hoping someone might have the soundtrack to.

I hope this doesn't sound politically incorrect, but I'm fascinated by the tradition of "black musicals" because they get ignored so much and I think there are a lot of great forgotten shows out there. I was hoping to start a discussion/posting about that here.

I've recently uploaded Gospel at Colonus, The Me Nobody Knows, Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death and Avenue X among others. Let me know if your are interested in any of these.

@ Mindy -

Marty Balin's classic Rock and Roll Musical - Rock Justice is now available on DVD. Recorded live in 1979 at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco this release features a stellar cast, a kick ass band and lots of zany action!

This is a story drawn from Marty Balin's real life experiences and satirizes the music industry and the Legal system simultaniously. Most of the story unfolds on stage where the singer (Jesse Bradman from Night Ranger and Eddie Money) finds himself in a nightmarish rock and roll courtroom. His crime-the failure to write a hit single.

Thanks everybody for the great shares! Mindy, I am still rocking Gospel At Colonus. The Five Blind Boys always bring tears to my eyes. And I never knew that Morgan Freeman played a role in it. Can't thank you enough.

Wondering if anyone has any of the following:

-"One Mo' Time"
-"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
-"Your Arms Too Short To Box With God"
-"Hello Dolly" with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway
-"Harlem Song" with Lena Horne
-"Grind" with Ben Vereen

Thanks in advance.

@ Mindy - I ran across a curiosity that I wonder if you have already.
"Legend" Original Broadway Soundtrack
Starring Elizabeth Ashley, F. Murray Abraham and George Dzundza?
What a bizarre cast!
Listed as "a new romantic comedy by Samuel Taylor" with original music by Dan Goggin.

Isbum said...

@ Mindy - Even more curious, now that I'm listening to it.

I don't think it's a musical at all!

Produced for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.1978
According to IMDB Dan Goggin is the "Nunsense" guy. However, "Legend" isn't listed as being one of his credits.

I'm lost on this...it's like a movie score written for a stage play.

Mindy said...

@ isbum - the IBDB (Internet Broadway Database) says it is a romantic comedy set in the American Western past.

Written by Samuel Taylor with "incidental music" by Dan Goggin and a title song by Ronee Blakely (of Nashville fame).

I'm a bit surprised there's an original cast album since it only ran 5 performances plus 18 previews and I don't think Goggins was that famous at the time.

I thought at first it might be a musical since F. Murray has actually done a couple and Elizabeth Ashley can sing, but it seems not.

@ mindy - Thanks for the background check. I'll post it here and at the Filmscorium when it's ready.

Lp says:
1978 Theatre Archives
590 West End Avenue, New York, NY
Recorded at Studio 21, N.Y.C.

Makes me wonder how the Lp wound up in Pasadena. :) I would imagine a small number of these were made.

From the pictures on the back, it looks like an expensive production.
I've seen a lot of movie westerns with cheesy costumes, this has as the look of authenticity that comes from a talented designer.

Mindy said...

@ isbum - well the costume designer was Florence Klotz who has won 7 Tony Awards fro everything from Show Boat to Pacific Overtures and been nominated for a couple more.

No nominations for Legend, but it did win a couple Drama Desk awards for scenic design (Santo Loquasto - another multi-Tony award winner) and lighting design. Seems like there was a lot of money behind this production.

Isbum said...

@ mindy - Nice to see that background information. We should a regular column called "Mindy's Peek Behind the Broadway Curtains!". :)

Honestly, the Lp looks like a film soundtrack. Elizabeth is all decked out like Raquel Welch in "Bandolero" on the cover.

@ soulbrotha - I have most of your latest requests, except Ma Rainey

One Mo' Time
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R9P6AWMC

Your Arms Too Short To Box With God
http://rapidshare.com/files/105927519/arms.rar

Hello Dolly" with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway
http://rapidshare.com/files/103964244/doll67.rar

And I have a cast album of Harlem Song from 2002, but it does not have Lena Horne. The castalbums.org database doesn't even list such a version. Can you send me more info?

@ isbum - did you change the typeface on the comment page a few days ago? Suddenly my elderly eyes are having trouble reading these.

@ all - sorry I haven't posted as much lately. I'm suddenly off on two new tangents in my Broadway album obsession. Thought maybe some of you could help.

The first is easy listening/lounge/jazz versions of Broadway scores. Such as: 101 Strings perform My Fair Lady or the Mike Sammes Singers do Finian's Rainbow or Hair Goes Latin or Percy Faith does Camelot. You get the idea.
Any posts would be appreciated and enjoyed.

The other is foreign language versions of Broadway shows and Disney musicals, especially more obscure versions such as Icelandic, Dutch, Chinese, etc. rather than Spanish, French, German.
Again, if anyone feels like posting that would be lovely.

Hello everyone,
isbum asked me to give an update on my son. Well his Spring musical was a sold out hit. He finished the Hot Mikado playing Ko-Ko(the grand high executioner. He played the Character like a spoiled crazy person and used 6 different voices for comedy effect. It was very funny. He was dropped off last weekend to start his degree in Music Theater at the Chicago School for the Performing Arts. He is very excited to be around a bunch of like minded Music theater heads. His roommate is a Jazz guitarist. They are going to have a blast.

HOLY COW, MINDY!! THANK YOU!!

You are friggin awesome!!

Mindy, I made a mistake.

Harlem Song (2002) IS the correct soundtrack I am looking for.

The musical with Lena Horne that I'm also looking for is "Jamaica".

Sorry for the confusion.
