Hi - when Kiss Me Kate was new, Capitol artists Jo Stafford, Gordon MacRae and Paul Weston recorded an album of its song. The Big 10-Inch Record has that album as the final installment of our tribute to Jo Stafford, who passed away recently.

@ isbum - thanks so much for Legend (looking forward to listening to it) and the instrumental Broadway album.
I am in the grip of this horrible obsession at the moment and love finding/getting stuff like this. I just downloaded something called the Groovy Sound of Music by a jazz vibrophonist. Electronic Hair is also quite fun.

@soulbrotha - I will try to upload and post Harlem Song soon. Keep checking.
Any chance you or anyone has the European Touring cast of Bubbling Brown Sugar? I have Broadway, London and Dutch but not this. Capathia Jenkins and Rhetta Hughes are 2 of the "bigger" names in this version.

Anyone have The Glory of Gospel from 1996? Another cast album with Rhetta Hughes done in the Netherlands in English and written by one Mabel Robinson

@ cybellio - if someone doesn't beat me to it, I think I can post The Rose sometime this weekend.

Hey there,

Fans of Rodgers and Hart may be interested in an LP available on the "Big 10-inch Record. It's a record conducted by Rodgers himself of selections from the shows he did with Hart.

This is not the same record that Rodgers did in 1954 with the New York Philharmonic. I'm guessing these recordings were made in the late 1930s, although this LP did not come out until 1949.

Has anyone ever done (or come across) a dvd rip of the score from "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol"? A terrific Styne/Merrill score. I think I had an LP of it years ago. Thank you!

Anonymous said...

I've often wondered if there was an LP of the songs of "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol." It really is a great score.

I saw on another blog a children's record of that title, but I think it was just someone narrating the story without the songs. Is that the LP you had?

Mindy said...

@ david - thanks for posting Bessie & Me! I'm one of the people who was looking for it.

I swear I posted this comment a few days ago, but maybe my brain is on the fritz:)

Mindy said...

I'm happy and a little bit intimidated to be taking over here, but I'll do my best to keep things running smoothly and maybe - with luck - spark some conversation and postings.

In that vein, my inaugural post has two parts:

First, in honor of the recently departed, legendary writer and oral historian Studs Terkel, I thought I'd post the original Broadway cast recording of 1978's Working.

Stephen Schwartz adapted this seminal book by Terkel that captured people from all walks of life talking about their jobs.

An unlikely subject for a musical, the Broadway run was sadly short - about a month - despite a score by Schwartz, Mary Rodgers, pop songwriter James Taylor, Craig Carnelia (Is There Life After High School? The Sweet Smell of Success) and Micki Grant (Your Arms are Too Short to Box with God; Don't Bother Me I Can't Cope).

The OBC includes Mr. & Mrs. Juan Peron (Bob Gunton and Patti LuPone), Lynne Thigpen and surprisingly Joe Mantegna! Who knew he sang?

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E3G0XWBY

LA Theatre Works did a radio cast in 2000, which I'll try to post later, and apparently there is a 2001 Catalan cast album. If anyone could post that it would be greatly appreciated.

Mindy said...

Second post - in honor of Tuesday's election - I thought I'd post a couple of "political" musicals and ask others to name their favorites and post if possible.

Mr. President is a 1962 musical by Irving Berlin (book by Lindsay & Crouse)about a fictional U.S. president and his family; their last days in the White House; and retirement into civilian life.

The OBC album features Robert Ryan, Nanette Fabray and Anita Gillette. The score is entertaining, although no Berlin standards emerged.

Thanks to bongoland for the link:

http://rapidshare.com/files/98029734/MrPresident.zip

Does anyone have the studio cast with Perry Como and Kaye Ballard?

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (a later version is known as A White House Cantata) is a surprising 1776 flop by Alan Jay Lerner and Leonard Bernstein.

This history of the White House and American racial politics through the time of Teddy Roosevelt featured Ken Howard, Patricia Routledge and Gilbert Price.

Here's a live recording of the OBC:
http://rapidshare.com/files/104540739/1600_Penn_Ave_2CD.part1.rar

http://rapidshare.com/files/104546929/1600_Penn_Ave_2CD.part2.rar

Finally, I think I posted this before, but the 1968 off-broadway satire How to Steal an Election is by folksinger Oscar Brand and features Clifton Davis.

Here is the LA Theatre Works production of Working:

Buster said...

Hi Mindy,

Best of luck with the blog! I can't imagine anyone better suited to the job.

I do have that Perry Como-Kaye Ballard Mr. President, and can provide it, but it might take a few days.

Talking about political musicals, don't forget Of Thee I Sing!

Mindy said...

@ buster - I would love the Perry Como version of Mr. President. Thanks so much!

Of Thee I Sing is uploading now.

Here's a pretty apt summary from Wikipedia:

Of Thee I Sing is a musical with a score by George and Ira Gershwin and a book by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind. The musical lampoons American politics; the story concerns John P. Wintergreen, who runs for President of the United States on the "love" platform. However, when he falls in love with sensible Mary Turner instead of Diana Deveraux, the beautiful pageant winner selected for him, he finds himself in political hot water.

The original Broadway production, directed by Kaufman, opened in 1931 and ran for 441 performances, receiving critical and box office success. It has been revived several times in the U.S. and in London. Of Thee I Sing was the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, in 1932.

I believe the version I'm uploading also contains the sequel "Let 'Em Eat Cake"

Mindy said...

Here is the 1987 version of Of Thee I Sing and Let 'Em Eat Cake. It features David Garrison, Jack Gilford, Larry Kert, Maureen McGovern and Paige O'Hara.

Beware it is a huge 198 MB zip file:

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.

@ buster - an extra special thanks for the Mr. President post.
I wish we would still see pop artist studio casts of musicals like there were years ago. I would think all-star versions of Rent or Hairspray could be a lot of fun.

One of these days I'll post the Reprise Studio albums of Guys & Dolls, Kiss Me Kate, South Pacific and Finian's Rainbow with Sinatra, Dean Martin, Dinah Shore, Jo Stafford, Sammy Davis etc. I think they're charming.

Maybe I'll even ask everyone else to post their favorite studio cast versions of shows.

@ mel - so glad that you are back and hope that you are doing well after your loss. It's lovely that your mother lived such a long life and obviously had such a wonderful son.

I would greatly appreciate your help if and when Musical Moadom gets up and running again. What a treasure trove it was. And I'd barely made a dent in the archives. I would be happy to contribute, of course.

@ soulbrotha - I'm with you! I know Isbum would like us to keep personal politics out of this to ensure civility and no name calling, so I'll just say that I was very happy for the first time in my not-so-young life to vote FOR a presidential candidate instead of AGAINST the other guy.

The sessions were conducted by Douglas Gamley and Robert Farnon at Walthamstow Town Hall, London in 1958."

Hello Mindy and all musical fans - here's an unusual one for you. It's a promotional EP for a 1957 televised production of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta Yeomen of the Guard. Stars are two of Broadway's best ever - Alfred Drake and Barbara Cook. This doesn't show up in the G&S discography, so I think it may be rare, but who knows? (Maybe Mindy.)

Anyway, it's over at the Big 10-Inch Record.

Mindy said...

@ Buster - thanks for this interesting recording!

About all I was able to dig up was that it was Drake's TV debut.

Everyone should go to Buster's site and read about this recording, including the great link to a site that reviews a kinoscope of the production etc.

quinlan said...

@ all
At last the link summaries as of October 31 have been posted in the usual space.
I'd like to ask you to forgive me for not beeing as punctual as usual due to exceptional circumstances.
It's to be noted that October is a record month in terms of number of links. We achieved a total number of 527 links only for Filmscorium as opposed to 389 in September or 284 in August. The last month recording more links than the current one was September 2007 with 684 links. So it's nice to see that the crisis is not with us...
I'd like also to catch this opportunity to give you a reminder, in particular to the welcome and so productive newcomers.
If you appreciate what I'm doing you can be of a tremendous help to me in making sure that your links are clearly described with the album title and the artist(s) name(s), the way you would like them to be reported in the link lists I prepare.
In addition, if you use the hyper link technique, please report the complete link as the hyper link. Words like "here", or "click" oblige me to open the link to be able to copy and paste it. In this respect look at what filmpac is doing which is perfect for me.
Also, if you refer to a request, please repeat the album and artist name. If you just say, when answering the request, "here is what you wanted", it obliges me to go back to the request which sometimes was raised several days earlier, to identify the link.
So, you would oblige me by accepting to follow these little rules. It would save me a lot of time.
Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Thanksgiving Post #1 (A Theme Post)

A few weeks ago after Buster kindly posted the Perry Como studio version of "Mr. President," I promised to post some of my favorite pop/studio recordings of Broadway shows.

Specifically The Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre recordings. Basically, in the mid-60s, Frank, Dean and Sammy joined together with Bing Crosby and a few gal pals - Dinah Shore, Jo Stafford, Debbie Reynolds, the McGuire Sisters and Rosemary Clooney to put their spin on 4 great Broadway musicals.

Finian's Rainbow - Reprise Musical Reperatory Theatre:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/1m53sb

Kiss Me Kate - Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/y55r14

South Pacific - Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/xgsyw9

Guys & Dolls - Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/s7ve7k

Guys & Dolls is my favorite since it seems so well suited to the talents involved - at least the Guys. Debbie Reynolds isn't my idea of Miss Adelaide, but Frank, Dean, Sammy and Bing are sublime.

Sadly the tradition of popular singers covering musicals seems to have died out. The only recent example I can think of is Wig in the Box, the 2003 tribute to Hedwig & the Angry Inch by artists as varied as Yoko Ono and Rufus Wainwright:

Wig in a Box:

If anyone would like to post, request or discuss their favorite pop, rock, jazz or whatever covers of musicals, all contributions would be welcome.

I may have mentioned this here before (or maybe on my blog), but my favorite pop version of a Broadway score is the Jackie Paris/Marilyn Moore version of Oh Captain! Will post if you don't have it - or if anyone is interested.

@ Buster - I do have that great version of Oh, Captain somewhere, but I'm sure others would appreciate a post if you have the time.

I also recently got Eileen Farrell Sings....
Alec Wilder
Rodgers & Hart
Johnny Mercer
Let me know if you need any of those as well.

@ Mindy

What a fantastic batch of shows you have just posted for Thanksgiving.

We must give thanks to you!

Mindy, I cannot thank you enough for the Reprise Repertory Theatre recordings. I've wanted to replace my worn-out vinyl copies for ages! I learn so much from all of you here, and enjoy reading the comments almost as much as I enjoy the music. You're doing God's work here! Thanks again!

@ isbum - thanks for the share of Repo! It is indeed an interesting musical, plus it features Buffy's Anthony Head who I adore. I always thought he'd make a perfect Brad in Rocky Horror. In fact, I am at this moment envisioning an all Buffy/Angel version of Rocky!

Speaking of that, any chance anyone has Head's mini Rocky Horror album from 1991? He does a couple versions of Sweet Transvestite plus Time Warp. I'd love a copy.

@ Ron - I sent a request to someone for the Will Bronson album but have not heard back yet. Don't loose hope.

Hi Mindy,

Again thanks for your effort.

Hi Mindy,

Did I see something about Alec Wilder?

Could you let us have some details, please?

Best regards.

Mindy said...

@ Mel - yes, I just recently acquired a couple Alec Wilder albums. A "Broadway" composer, I have to admit I knew nothing about until recently.

Eileen Farrell Sings Alec Wilder. Here's a link with more info:

http://www.castalbums.org/recordings/14123

And the Smithsonian's American Songbook Series: Alec Wilder.
That one is thanks to the great blog Singing & Swinging.

More info here:

http://www.castalbums.org/recordings/6571

I'll gladly post one or both if there's interest.

Somewhere I also have a copy of his musical Clues to a Life:

http://www.castalbums.org/recordings/3585

But any info/recordings you could suggest/post would be swell. His Hansel & Gretel, Kittiwake Island and Pinocchio all are on my wishlist.

Buster said...

@ Mindy and Mel,

A couple of suggestions:

- Alec Wilder Octets, recently posted at Big 10-Inch Record (thanks to People vs. Dr. Chilledair)

- Alec Wilder compilation recently on Singer-Saints blog

- There is an Alec Wilder site on the web with downloads of exceptional performances of his songs. This stuff is really good and mostly rare.

Finally, I am on the road, but I know I have Hansel & Gretel and other Wilder musicals at home. I'll check. One caveat - I am really behind on things! (As usual.)

Ron said...

Mindy said...

@ Buster - thanks for all the Wilder recommendations. And, it would be wonderful if you'd like to contribute those Wilder shows when you return home and have the time.

All contributions graciously welcomed:)

I definitely understand that being behind feeling - I'm starring at stacks of 70+ CDs that need to be ripped etc. before going back to the library ASAP. not to mention dealing with my "real life" too!

@ David - thanks so much for the contributions.

I'm still keeping an eye out for
The Night That Made America Famous and Terri White's The Lady's Got to Sing.

Unfortunately things don't look good - you can't even get it from her web site anymore. Maybe someone in NY would have better luck finding a copy.

You'd think there should be a website devoted to all things Chapin obscure just like there is for Nilson. But I haven't found one yet.

Mel probably has more info, but it doesn't look like Musical Moadam has resurfaced sadly.

mel said...

@ Mindy and David

I'm sorry to bring you the news that because of a technicality with E-Blogger which does not allow for more than 100 invited members to a private blog, and because the Moadom team were inundated with around 200 applications from their former visitors, there is no possibility of any more to be accepted (lots had to be refused). This was not the team's choice; it was only because of the E-Bloger protocol.

Actually, Terri White is now performing occasionally in my home away from home, Key West, FL in a new cabaret club called THE KEYS. (A lot of the 'Don't Tell Mama' crew has been imported for stints, including George.) She's dating someone locally, and is expected back often; there's talk she may relocate there. When I am down for Christmas/New Year's, I will ask her HOW to buy a copy of that CD.

Mindy said...

@ natedance - thanks so much for your contributions here and over at Mel & Sallie's. They are much appreciated and all lovely selections that I highly recommend.

@ RodTRoss - thanks for the Terri White update. Any help would be great. Perhaps if you tell Ms White that she has several fans here, she wouldn't object to us posting the album for everyone's enjoyment.

@ Mel - thanks for the update about Musical Moadam even if the news wasn't what I was hoping for.

Perhaps, if they can ever increase the number, David and I could join.

In the meantime, if I could ask a favor and if the proprietors there wouldn't object: if they happen to post any specifically Broadway related albums (i.e. Tito Puente Plays My Fair Lady, Rosemary Clooney Sings Rodgers, Hart & Hammerstein etc.) could you re-post the link?

Or if you could send the link to me, I would download then re-upload a new link for here.
Let me know if this is possible.

mel said...

@ Mindy

Absolutely. If any Broadway-related albums crop up there I will send you the links with pleasure. I will be on the lookout for them.

Although Christopher Plummer didn't think much of his acting/singing in The Sound of Music, it lead the way to his future role in a musical version of Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway.

Would someone have the recently released (2005) CD of that 1973 musical, Cyrano and be able to share?

I have a copy @128 with the most distracting background interference (it sounds like a helicopter's blades whooping) that it's like nails on a blackboard to try to listen to it. I suspect it was an LP rip.

Thank you.

Bigbro411 said...

Please, does anyone have the Cast recording of "The Wizard of Oz on Ice"?

Mindy said...

@ LaraQ - I have a copy of Cyrano somewhere. If someone else doesn't post it before me, I'll upload it in the next couple days - once I dig it up.
As a bonus, I have to upload the rarer Maltby & Shire Cyrano for someone, so I'll post that too.

@ Mr. Remember - I'm afraid that's one Oz I don't have. Here's hoping someone else on the site can help out.
In the meantime, I'll look around at some other sites to see if it's been posted.

I wanted to post a tribute to one of my favorite actors - Van Johnson - who died yesterday at age 92.

Although he wasn't known as a musical/comedy star, he did appear in several musicals, notably the film version of Brigadoon with Gene Kelly and In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland.

He also did the original London stage version of The Music Man.

I had the great pleasure of meeting him about 25 years ago, when he did a summer theatre version of No, No Nanette.
My best girlfriend and I had, by chance, separately, fallen in love with his melodramatic tearjerker Miracle in the Rain the summer before and were enamored of him.

I can't imagine what this flamboyant movie star in his late 60s thought of two barely 20-something girls getting all gaga and giggly over him, but he could not have been more charming. Flirting and telling us we were "the cutest things ever."

Unlike many other celebrities I've met, Johnson was exactly like you hope a movie star will be.

When his obit came across the wire yesterday, I immediately e-mailed my girlfriend at work and we mourned together. So in honor of the most charming celebrity I ever met:

Brigadoon 1954 OST:

@mindy

Sorry to hear about Van Johnson's passing. Strangely enough, last night I went through my favorite songs from 5 different versions of Brigadoon and realized that I had archived the OST so it wasn't on my hard drive any longer.

I'm going to download the cd you posted and listen to it right now and remember the pleasure I've had in watching and listening to him over the years.

Thank you

natedance said...

Thats a shame about Van Johnson. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at the London Palladium back in the 90's at an MGM Gala. He was so lovely, he sang from the Music Man but couldn't get through it all and just said That's All Folks I'm too old! Another great talent gone.

@ Ron - I'm afraid still no luck on the Will Bronson Singer's album. The person I hoped to get a copy from seems to have dropped out of sight for awhile.

I found a site that says it has several copies for sale at various prices and quality, if you're interested. In the meantime....

@ all - if anyone can fulfill Ron's request for the Will Bronson Singer's Best of Broadway, it would be a great Christmas gift!

@ David - so glad you got the Harry Chapin promo replaced. I was looking forward to hearing it, but the download link says Billy Elliot and is 137 MB.

Now maybe we can get a line on the Terri White CD when RodTRoss gets back from Key West.

A Terri White/Key West update:
While the solo CD HAS been burnt for me -- from Terri's own copy, since apparently the Master and any future repressing is tied up, to her frustration, since she'd like to sell it at the The Keys club she sings at -- I may be unable to secure it before leaving the island.
A friend unexpectedly and tragically died -- the owner of a resort/cabaret here called
LaTeDa -- and it has thrown
many people involved into chaos. It would appear unseemly if I pursued it today.
But I WILL post it if it gets mailed to me back in Indpls. or, worst case, when I am back mid-February.
P.S. Terri's a GREAT lady, content to spend her later years here, just relocated two weeks ago to be with her new partner. She told me a couple anecdotes about Eartha Kitt that were NOT flattering but not really printable, reminisced about her time in a show called 'Let My People Come,' her time in 'Barnum' and sings a smashing version of 'Killing Me Softly.' She is a tremendous asset to the KW cabaret/theatrical community and her friendship with other performers bodes well for appearances. Anyone looking for a Winter getaway should really investigate Key West. End of shill.
P.S.S. Also spotted Kelly McGillis in-town, and rumor has it Shania Twain was here again with her new beau.

Hi, I asked for this on Isbum and the Classical rooms awhile back but no luck. Maybe someone here has it. I'm looking for Beverly Sills singing Victor Herbert with Andre Kostelanetz conducting. She won a Grammy for Classical Vocal for it (beating Streisand's Classical album). Certainly not a Broadway cast album, but a lot of those songs came from their original Broadway operetta incarnations.

Mindy said...

@ Jim - thanks for joining us. One of my local libraries has the Sills album you are looking for, so I put a hold on it just in case nobody here can fill your request more quickly.

I posted these to fulfill a request over at the Cheeze Factory and figured they might find some takers here as well.

This is "Show Girl," a 1961 Broadway revue starring Carol Channing, Jules Munshin and four Frenchmen billed as Les Quat' Jeudis:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A1Y1YGW5

To borrow a quote from Switchblade Bess (one of Carol's numbers), "It's meaty. It's trenchant. And it's got guts."

"Show Girl" was the source of much of the material in Carol Channing On Tour. (This was the request at Cheeze Factory.) So here's Carol Channing On Tour:
As two files, sides A & B:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RCGFUJ8O

As 11 separate files, broken according to the track listing but with my arbitrary choice of where to place the track mark amid the applause:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z6EBDC9K

All are my rips from vinyl @ 256. A little surface noise on Show Girl. Track listing and cover art in the folders.

@ Mr. Remember, I also don't have that version of Wizard of Oz sadly.

I do know that at least one person on this board who recently had some requests filled does have it, so maybe he or she will be kind enough to post it for both of us.

@ GaSP - thanks for the Channing Cheez (gee whiz!). Oddities are always welcome.

@ Olaf - thanks for filling Dylan's request so quickly and....

@ Dylan - welcome welcome. I'll try to come up with some musicals that might strike your fancy and with luck, so will the rest of the wonderful souls here.

Can you give us some specific titles that you do like, so we have a better idea of your taste? Are we talking My Fair Lady or Phantom of the Opera? Oklahoma or Les Miserables?

Mindy, I really love anything and everything with a big melody and a huge orchestra, but having said that I must say that virually everything by Michel Legrand and Stephen Sondheim comes to mind.

And with that said, maybe you've provided such a list here in the past, but I was curious if you'd be willing to provide your ten all-time favorite musicals?

You also seem to have an incredible amount of access to rare recordings, so I'm sure you could come up with some fascinating lists in general.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/hyyztg

I listened to this while ripping it and even though I'm not a big fan of operetta or opera, I thought it was wonderful. Everyone should give it a try. Sills' voice is just so magnificent.

Mindy said...

@ natedance - yes, thank you so much for sharing the Wizard of Oz. Looking forward to hearing it.

Mindy said...

@ Dylan - wow! And I thought it was hard when people asked me to pick my top 10 movies.

Honestly, there's no way I could pick a top 10 because so many of my favorite musicals are linked to some outside criteria - my dad directed Guys & Dolls, Bye Bye Birdie, Godspell and others multiple times for example. Or I saw them on Broadway when I was young which was just such a magic experience (On the Twentieth Century, Evita, Woman of the Year, Dreamgirls etc.)

My taste is extremely wide ranging - some might say not discriminating enough. To paraphrase Will Rogers: I never met a musical I didn't like.

Not quite true. In fact, Will Rogers Follies is one I'm sort of so-so about. But it would be easier to say what I don't like.

I'm not a fan of Phantom (although I do inexplicably like earlier Lloyd Webber - Superstar, Evita and even the much maligned Cats and Joseph).
Les Miserables is OK. But better seen as spectacle than listened to in my opinion.
And for some reason The Secret Garden by Lucy Simon bores me silly.

My best advice would be to go through here and see what download links still work and just listen, listen, listen.
You're off to a great start with Sondheim & Legrand.

I will work on a list of favorite composers though. Meanwhile, anyone else want to try to offer their top 10 musicals?

wordsofnote said...

@ Mindy - Thank you so much for this. The other rip I had of this was half from a scratchy LP and half sounded like it was ripped in a toilet. So this is fabulous. Thank you! Now, without seeming ungrateful, would it be possible to rerip it at 320? If not, that's totally fine. I'm more than pleased to have no more scratches and toilet reverb. LOL If there's anything I can find in my rarities, I'll share them. This has truly made my day. :)

Mindy said...

@ wordsofnote - I probably can do that for you. I should have asked first. Sometimes I forget not everyone has my inability to tell the difference until it gets down to about 96 kbps.

With a title long enough to be an Anthony Newley musical, this is the 1965 Off-Broadway revue "Ben Bagley's The Decline and Fall of the Entire World as Seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter":
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A07MCKRA

From Ben Bagley's "Revisited" series, this is "Make Mine Manhattan & Great Revues Revisited":
part1- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PN4PN82L
part2- http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OZGBAWOI

And here's a club act, "Vivian Blaine Live In Hollywood" from 1983:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0Z58GKU7

Every time Mindy mentions getting things from her local library, I think of Ben Bagley. When I was in college, the town library had all the "Revisited" albums. They were in terrible condition, but I listened to (and dutifully taped) every one. Those tapes are long gone now, and I've only replaced a few of them in more durable formats. If anyone has any of these and could post them, I'd surely appreciate it. I'd really like to hear again the George Gershwin one with Barbara Cook & Bobby Short, and the Alan Jay Lerner one. I have some others that I'll post in the future.

"Decline And Fall..." starred Kaye Ballard, with William Hickey, Carmen Alvarez and Elmarie Wendell.
The "Make Mine Manhattan" album has Helen Gallagher, Lynn Redgrave, Nancy Andrews, Arthur Siegel, Dolores Gray, Estelle Parsons and more of the usual Bagley types. Oh, and Elaine Stritch. Great songs about NYC in the first half, great songs from past revues in the second.

Now, about the Blaine thing: consider whether you'd rather not remember her as you do now. That said, she covers a few Sondheim and Herman songs, and also does a medley of her songs from "Guys & Dolls."

My rips. The Bagleys are from vinyl @256 with very little SCP (snap, crackle, pop). The Blaine is from CD @192 (and on this one, you'd notice no difference if it was at 1920 or 3000...)

Enjoy!

The Vivian Blaine thing put me in mind of Mel Torme's 9-minute "Guys & Dolls" medley from his "Night At The Concord Pavilion" album, so I quickly uploaded that just now:

@ natedance - here you go. The Music of Victor Herbert @320 kbps:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/j7che0

@ isbum - it's sad isn't it. Maybe I listened to too much loud rock music or something. At our house I pick out computers, DVD players, TVs etc. but audio components are all up to the hubby since it all sounds the same to me.

I probably have links for Woman in White and Whistle Down the Wind somewhere.

@ GaSP - oooh I love the Ben Bagley stuff. Thanks so much for sharing. Another forum I'm on (TSS) is trying to get all the albums posted, plus some of the hilarious liner notes.

I'll do a long background post in the next few days for anyone unfamiliar with Ben and post what I can. I think I have everything now except Irving Berlin Revisited and Jerome Kern 3 & 4.
A family friend was musical director for some of these, I should ask him for some info/anecdotes.

I love Vivian Blaine. Your share reminded me that I'd always thought she and Stubby Kaye were the only original cast in the film Guys & Dolls because they were just so perfect in the roles. But I just learned that she only got the film after Betty Grable turned it down. What a shame it would have been for her performance not to have been preserved on film!

As much as I liked Lauren Graham on Gilmore Girls, I'm just not picturing her as Miss Adelaide in this new revival.

@ All
Just to let you know that the December link lists have been posted in the usual section of the blog.
I'd like to draw your attention to the Filmscorium list which is presented in a different way as opposed to the traditional presentation. This blog was first opened in may 2007 and since that date I have been issuing a new sheet each month, so at the end of December 2008 there were 20 sheets which, in my opinion, could make a search long and difficult. I mean that someone who would like to find a specific album or artist had to repeat the same search procedure with each sheet, i.e. 20 times.
So I have put together all 20 months on one single sheet where , however, each month is clearly identified the same way as for the shop link lists.
By the way, after 20 months, we are reaching a number of links over 10000 units…
Now, this way, if you want to search for a specific item you'll just have to apply the relevant procedure once.
Let me also remember you that once you have downloaded the lists, they become yours. I mean you may manipulate them as you like, modify the order if necessary. For instance should you require to have all "Ennio Morricone" links all together, sort the list by alphabetical order with the artist name as the first sorting level and you'll have at the letter "E" all Ennio Morricone's links in one section.
If for any reason you think that the old presentation is preferable, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Good luck and thank you for your kind attention.

Mindy - you gave me the link for Victor Herbert?? Did you mean that for someone else as I hadn't requested it.

Also, does any have either of the Mitzi Gaynor albums??? After watching her special the Razzle Dazzle years, I've fallen in love with her all over again and her albums seem pretty elusive - or ridiculously expensive!!!

Mindy said...

@ natedance - sorry, the Victor Herbert was for wordsofnote. I tried to do too much at once.

Since I'm not sure about the etiquette involved, I'm going to give you two links with full credit to the sites that recently posted the 1958 album Mitzi by Mitzi Gaynor.

@ isbum - thanks for "Aggiungi Un Posto A Tavola" 1975.

The original album art is a confusing single chair with a dove on it next to a circle, but judging from the English cast title Beyond the Rainbow and clearer album art, I'm guessing this is a Noah and the Ark tale. Popular too, there are about 15 cast recordings listed.

I think we already posted Two By Two - Danny Kaye's take on Noah - and discussed Kaye's propensity for improvising during the run.
Somewhere I have a demo with Tom Bosley from an attempted revival.

There's also The Ark from 2006 with Adrian Zmed.

Any more Noah musicals out there?

Hi,

Thought you might be interested in Cyrano: The Musical - Australian Concept Cast Recording - 1994. This is not to confused with any Broadway version. I don't believe this got past the concept stage. I saw this production (songs only by cast - no stage props etc) in Brisbane in 1994. Cast included Normie Rowe, Simon Gallaher,Kirri Adams, Mick Leyton, John O'May & Avigail Herman. Normie Rowe was a 60's pop singer in Australia & vietnam vet. Simon Gallaher produced and appeared in a lot of Gilbert & Sullivan productions in Australia. Book and lyrics by Hal Shaper, music by David Reeves.

Isbum said...

@ Mindy -
Not a original cast recording.

This "concept" album reminds me of Galt MacDermot's writing. A wonderful mixture of songs and score. Twyla or Fosse could have had a great time choreographing dancers to this.
I forget where this came from, so thanks to the original sharer!

http://rapidshare.com/files/191301297/TP_SuiteLondon.zip

Info:
Suite London was the final album released by the original line-up of the Peddlers. Without question this is their most ambitious and artistically most successful project. The album contains only original compositions. The superb musicianship and taste of the Peddlers is augmented by classically trained composer and rock keyboard player Peter Robinson, known for his work with Chris Farlowe, Quatermass, Suntreader, Phil Collins and many others. On Suite London, Peter Robinson wrote instrumental pieces for the orchestra and for the band. His compositions add much depth to the work. It's almost a collaboration.

Does anyone have these versions of these shows?

Pal Joey -- 1980 London Cast with Denis Lawson and Sian Phillips

Guys and Dolls -- 198? London Cast with Ian Charleson, Julie Covington, Bob Hoskins, Julia McKenzie

Much thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Mindy said...

@ isbum - thanks for Suite London. Sounds interesting.

Can't say I've ever heard of the Peddlers or any of the other bands/people mentioned except Phil Collins. There are weird gaps in my musical knowledge though, especially when it comes to British rock.

@ David79801 - somewhere I do have both of those recordings. I'll try to upload in a day or two.

However, the CD I had of that Guys & Dolls recording, was pressed as one long single track for the entire show. It's a real pain, but I've never taken the time to break it up.
If anyone has a tracked version they could post, I'd greatly appreciate it and I imagine David would as well.

Hey Mindy,

You do an excellent job with your little corner of FranklyNot! Thanks for all the hard work and generous shares. Thanks for everyone for their shares, in fact. I keep forgetting to mention, in case any Sondheim completists don't frequent the Filmscorium, I shared the out-of-print soundtrack (score and songs) to Reds, last month. (See the January Archive). As most of you know, Sondheim wrote the lovely main theme, "Goodbye For Now". If you download the art as well, I've tucked in a couple covers of the song with its original lyric restored. Maybe there's a Sondheim fanatic who is missing just this one thing from their collection, so enjoy!

I've only ever been able to find a copy of the 12-song version, even though there are 16- and 18-song versions. Mostly what is missing is the overture, reprises and a chorus number. The biggest item missing seems to be Lawson singing "Pal Joey."

If anyone has a longer version it would be appreciated.

Thanks GaSP for song and dance that was the one I was after. Thanks also to this site for broadening my musical collection. To show how starved we are in Brisbane, Australia for musicals there is nothing showing at the moment - Chicago starts in early april. They also tend to keep bringing the same ones back, cats, phantom etc. There is no risk taking. Last show was My Fair Lady in November. Help. Please find link below for highlights for Jekyll & Hyde with Anthony Warlow in the lead. (great Aussie voice). I believe it was made in the U.S. with Linda Eder, Carolee Carmello, John Raitt, Phillip Hoffman, Bill Nolte etc. Do not compare with David Hasselhoff (who ever let him near a microphone).
cheers.

Something else I ripped over the weekend. This is "Purlie" (Geld/Udell, 1970):

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9U4JMZYE

While I was uploading Tell Me On A Sunday on Sunday, I visited a few of my favorite blogs. Over at easylisteningworld, while scanning the tracklist for an album, I saw "Walk Him Up The Stairs." Well, it's not every day that you come across a cover of a song from Purlie, and better yet, this was an album by the Young Generation, kind of like a British version of Young Americans. On another of their albums they had done a cover of "Rhythm Of Life" that was devoid of both, so I was hoping for their worst (best). I was not disappointed. The surprising thing is that it appears to be the same arrangement as on the cast album, but the YoungGen kids make it their own...sorta like gospel for an adventurous CofE congregation. I included it in the zip.

One other thing about Purlie: if you're familiar with the score to "Jamaica" (Arlen/Harburg), the song "Big Fish, Little Fish" will sound very familiar to you. I've never been sure whether it's an "homage" or a rip-off.

Something I forgot to mention re: Tell Me On A Sunday, for any Elaine Stritch completists out there: it is she who answers the phone in Mr. Stigwood's office during "Capped Teeth And Caesar Salad." But I suppose if you're a Stritch completist you already knew that.

Purlie is my rip from vinyl @256 with a little SC&P (mainly noticeable between songs, but I removed most of it during track marking). A-A-A-men and enjoy.

@GaSP and everyone else who has posted over the last week:

Thanks so much for posting and picking up the slack. I've been going through one of my bad health phases and unable to do much of anything. Glad I don't have to worry how things are going here.

By the way, Purlie is one of my all time favorite scores, so Dylan, you should definitely download it!

@kowalgent - Welcome. Good to have you here. I'll try to get Bombay Dreams up sometime soon.

@philcrosbby - Welcome. I checked our posts and Mel & Sallies and I didn't find a posting for the 1776 OST, so I'm not sure where it came from or what the password might be.
