Hi. I am looking for scores / soundtracks of Natalie Wood movies, and i haven't been able to find a single one :)
So anything anyone has...much obliged!

Someone over at Mindy's requested a DVD rip of the soundtrack of Red Garters (1954). The request more properly belonged here as that is the place for Broadway shows while we are the Golden Age of Hollywood (that means soundtrack) aficionados.

Never mind. Here, for all you Golden Age fans and Rosemary Clooney completists, is something you cannot purchase anywhere - the original soundtrack of Red Garters (1954).

I didn't have a difficult job with this one but I hope you will excuse one or two abrupt endings - that's sometimes unavoidable and par for the course with DVD rips.

I would be very pleased if someone can find (or make) a better cover - the best one I could find is too small.

My rip at 320kbps - link:

I hope you enjoy it.

@ marklab

You said "the" DVD rip of Give A Girl A Break but I've never seen one around.

I think there may have been a soundtrack LP, possibly 10-inch, but I'm darned if I can find one now, so I'm going to pull out my DVD of it and try doing a soundtrack rip myself.

I can't guarantee posting it before Tuesday, or being successful, but stay tuned.

Well Rapidshare won’t let me download but at least it allowed me to upload…

Here you go - my DVD rip of the soundtrack of Give A Girl A Break (1953) - songs by Burton Lane and Ira Gershwin, additional music by Andre Previn and Saul Chaplin.

I occasionally included dialogue when it was an integral part of the number, here and there you’ll hear some sound effects, but all things considered it went reasonably well.

Ripped at 320kbps. Here is the link:

There was a 12-inch LP issued by EmGeeEm of the soundtrack of Tom Thumb (1958) but to the best of my knowledge the entire soundtrack has never been reissued on CD; so, if anyone has a copy I hope they will post it here.

It's very rare, however - so I expect I'll be attempting another DVD rip...

As no one has responded to your request, here is my DVD rip of the tom thumb (1958) soundtrack at 320kbps.

I left a few sound effects and bits of dialogue in a couple of the songs, as removing them would have diminished their integrity.

Of course, there are the occasional inevitable abrupt fades-in and fades-out.

If anyone can find the original LP cover I’d be pleased if they could kindly share a scan of it here. The file includes a small image of a not very colorful front cover:

Strange website, kazoolips.com. Screaming from the hilltops that they have a never before released soundtrack of The King Of Jazz (1930) (the CD cover pic is dated 2006) but there are absolutely no clickable links anywhere on the site. Looks like it could be still under construction.

Perhaps in a few weeks’ time they will be properly up and running…

One of the big musicals that still don't have their OST album, in spite of being one of the major MGM musicals of the Arthur Freed unit, with Astaire and Rogers, and music by Harry "42nd Street" Warren & the Gershwins! So, while we're waiting, I tried to put together sort of an OST album from different sources. A few tracks have been released on Rhino's Fred Astaire and "That's Entertainment" boxes, in great sound. On the more recent one of the two "That's Entertainment" boxes, they used a freshly unearthed version of the opening number "Swing Trot" that I added as a bonus track: It is much longer, but remastered mainly without the 'angles' that contained the whole string section of the orchestra and that are presumably lost. Any "Audacity" experts around? It should be possible to create a perfect stereo track out of these two released versions of "Swing Trot" ... :-)
As for the tap routine "Bouncin' the Blues", I used a rip of the movie's TV broadcast in non-English speaking countries, with an arrangement at the end that differs from the one on the version used for the "That's Entertainment" box, and, above all, without Fred's "Hey!" and "Yeah!" shouts while dancing. What remains, thus, is a pure "music and effects" track :-)
Enjoy, and: Merry Christmas!

Tracks:
01. "Swing Trot"
02. "Sabre Dance"
03. "You'd Be Hard to Replace" [extended]
04. "Bouncin' the Blues" [alternate arrangement, without overdubbing]
05. "My One and Only Highland Fling"
06. "Week-End in the Country"
07. "Shoes with Wings On"
08. "Concerto in B-flat Minor for Piano, First Movement"
09. "They Can't Take That Away from Me"
10. "Manhattan Downbeat" [extended]
11. End Credits
Bonus track:
12. "Swing Trot" [extended]

You're right - I have not come across a soundtrack release of The Barkleys Of Broadway.

You have indeed filled a large gap with your assembly of the tracks listed above.

I am not sure which edition of That's Entertainment I have but when I have time I will check out the Swing Trot sequence and see if I can figure out whether I can successfully make a composite track with Audacity.

Kudos to you for your effort, and thank you very much for sharing it with us.

Hi Everybody!
Thinking about something special to share with y’all as the year closes and to shake things up a bit at Golden Age, I decided on a Ben-Hur Special (for Rózsa completists). So without further ado: among the many existing Ben-Hur music issues, re-issues, recordings and re-recordings here’s what I consider to be the 3 most important and essential recordings every Ben-Hur Rózsaphile should have. A couple might have been posted sometime before here or elsewhere, but I submit them @320K and all neatly in one place folks: Sallie and Mel’s Golden Age of Hollywood! Why look elsewhere? (All uploads and rips from CD @320K are my own)

1. In 1991 Sony re-issued in one 2-CD package the two complementary albums of the original re-recorded music (not the OST) issued by MGM in 1960: Musical Highlights From Ben-Hur (MGM S1-E1) recorded by Carlo Savina conducting the Rome Symphony and More Music From Ben-Hur recorded by Erich Kloss (Miklós Rózsa?) conducting the Frankenland Symphony Orchestra (Sony re-arranged the cues from both albums chronologically). These re-recordings differ from the OST in that they were made with a different, richer orchestration, particularly the marches, which Rózsa chose to record with only brass and percussion for the screen presentation for “authenticity”, the music is therefore more concert-oriented. The quality of the recordings is excellent.(Original cover scan for More Music from Ben-Hur provided by Jim in the November postings of Vintage Vinyl – thanx!)

Miklós Rózsa – Ben Hur Complete Music From The MGM Presentation (Sony)- Original covers and Sony cover included

CD1 (101M): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OJHDQ9KW
CD2 (99M): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=H1DUF7R0

2. In 1977 London 4-Phase issued new re-recordings of Miklós Rózsa conducting his music for Ben-Hur (with The National Philharmonic) and Quo Vadis (with The Royal Philharmonic). The importance of these more technically modern recordings (20 years after the original film recording) is that they were conducted by the Master himself as concert music without the time limitations that a recording for the film imposes on the composer, so notwithstanding personal tastes, in my view this is the definite version of the Ben-Hur (and Quo Vadis) music presented. To those accustomed to the soundtrack the tempi will sound slower, but the results are simply awesome: the Shofar and Fanfare intro climaxing in the Main Ben-Hur theme just sends chills down my spine. (Again, cover scans of the original London 4-Phase issue and Decca re-issue provided by Jim in the November postings of Vintage Vinyl – thanx!)

Miklós Rózsa – Ben Hur 1977 Re-recording (London) 97M

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZY4DVH8S

3. Finally, and to the jubilation of all Rózsaphiles, in 1996 Rhino finally issued the complete Ben-Hur OST: 2 CDs, 89 tracks, 2 and a half hours of music including outtakes and extended versions.

Miklós Rózsa – Ben Hur Complete OST (Rhino) Covers included

CD1 (157M): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R0DKC6UJ
CD2 (154M): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=60R9DUN0

So there you are folks, hoping 2010 sees more sharing at Golden Age of Hollywood, here’s looking forward to a great new year and to our hosts, Sallie and Mel, ¡Salud!
Happy New Year!

georges said...

@fpalafox
The boot 3cd is interesting because we hear the score used in the film, the rhino CD's being the music recorded before the film mix:
way of the cross in 2 parts and a silence between fanfare and main title.
A fanfare is missing in the rhino CD's:when Messala arrives,at night with his legion,at the beginning of the film.

fpalafox said...

@georges:
You're absolutely right about the fanfare... very few people notice that. Back in 1996 when Rhino issued the complete OST I complained in some forum about the edition being called "complete" without the "Trumpeters of the legion!" fanfare (nitpicking, of course) and got some lame explanation/excuse for its absence which now is lost in some recess of my mind (I can't remember what it was!). Anyway, Rhino should be commended for the complete 89-track edition and I've got the old 35th anniversary edition LaserDisc which provides the isolated complete running filmscore; those, plus the other two versions (in the post) provide the complete and definitive Ben-Hur music collection for me! Regarding the bootleg you mention, I wasn't aware of it's existence.
I'm glad to see that there have been quite a few downloads of the Ben-Hur posts but your comment is the first one, so I appreciate it, Thanx!

aberdeennj said...

What is the process for ripping songs from a dvd? I'm thinking about buying all those great vitaphone musicals recently released by Warner Archives and creating soundtrack recordings that I can upload to my iPod.

mel said...

@ aberdeennj

Very simple the way I do it. I load the DVD into my computer.

Using the free software Audacity, I record the sound, which I can edit, then save as MP3.

That's it in a nutshell but if you need more details I'll be right here to help.

aberdeennj said...

I have another question. Do you have to record all the sound off the dvd and then edit off the songs into separate files? The last time I tried anything like this, I was a teenager ripping MGM musicals off the TV (late late show) with my portable cassette player!

aberdeennj said...

Are there any fans of MacDonald and Eddy out there? If so, this one's for you. The soundtrack to one of their biggest hits at MGM....Sweethearts.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ruihpj

Enjoy!

mel said...

@ aberdeennj

No, I find it much easier to record one song at a time. You edit it if necessary by fading in at the beginning and fading out at the end and deleting unwanted noises wherever possible, then saving it as mp3/ogg/wav; giving the song a track number and title when saving (all of the above after you have opened a special folder for the project).

Well I remember taking my portable reel-to-reel tape recorder to the drive-in to record the entire soundtracks of movies via a microphone...

These days it's a whole lot more sophisticated with digital.

Have fun - and remember that I'm here to help you with any problems that may crop up.

mel said...

@ aberdeenj

I'm probably the biggest Jeanette MacDonald - Nelson Eddy fan left...

Many thanks for Sweethearts.

Do you have any of the others?

MusicalGuy38 said...

Well, I'm not the biggest MacDonald-Eddy fan around, but any rare MGM soundtrack always appreaciated! Certainly when future "Scarecrow" Ray Bolger sings and taps along. Anyway, which hat did you pull this out of? LOL soundtrackcollector.com doesn't even list an album. DVD rip?

aberdeennj said...

I got this as part of a trade with another collector along with two other MacDonald-Eddy soundtracks (Bittersweet and I Married An Angel) which I will gladly post if you're interested in them. At one time I used to have recordings of Girl of the Golden West and Balalaika too, but the CD-Rs were corrupted before I had a chance to copy the files to another medium. :^(

MusicalGuy38 said...

Yes, 'Bittersweet' and 'Angel' would actually be great! I love Rodgers & Hart, and one can never go wrong with Noel Coward ;-) According to what I read it seems like they left at least a bit of the original score in tact ... Hi everyone - I have another obscure musical soundtrack over at the Big 10-Inch Record. This one is called Tonight We Sin! Wait, check that, it's Tonight We Sing! Sorry, no sex scenes, but there are musical interludes with Ezio Pinza, Roberta Peters and Jan Peerce. It's good, actually.

Same thing happened last weekend trying to download another file also from Sendspace. I tried downloading the file for several days at different times until I gave up. I thought something was wrong with the file, but now it seems not. Is anybody else having the same problem with Sendspace? Can you comment????

Once downloaded the file can be downloaded with Foobar.

P@rgy and B@ss (1959 OST Extended/Reconstructed)

I finally tried to reconstruct an extended sountrack album of this hard-to-get movie. Sammy Davis, Jr. who could not appear on the soundtrack LP for contractual reasons (and was therefore replaced, on the album, by Cab Calloway) at last finds his due place with his two songs (and one line each in "A Woman is a Sometime Thing" and the "I Can't Sit Down" reprise) that I ripped from the video file. Also included are about a dozen of songs and musical scenes that never made it to the LP album and CD.

Unfortunately I only had a shortened video in mediocre sound quality. "Doctor Jesus" is missing, and it's all in mono. The movie was actually released in stereo in the 1950s. If a video in stereo exists and could be posted by somebody, it would of course be greatly appreciated :-)
I did not always replace the video rips with the better sounding CD rips, for example when they are part of a whole musical scene and a CD insert would have led to very audible cuts in the musical transitions.

However I did attach, as bonus tracks, the LP version of the Main Title, as well as Cab Calloway's two tracks.

Now, for the first time, enjoy Sammy Davis, Jr., Pearl Bailey, Brock Peters, Bobby McFerrin's dad Robert McFerrin, Star Trek's Loulie Jean Norman, and a whole team of dubbers in "P@rgy and B@ss"!

@ GSW

I tried to find a soundtrack of Flying Down To Rio but it seems that it’s non-existent - so I thought I would haul out my DVD of the movie to attempt a rip of the music for you.

Normally this is not a problem - I have, with a certain amount of experience, become quite adept at editing out unwanted sounds and making my rips sound fairly acceptable.

Not in this case, I’m afraid. It was a battle to do it because of a noisy soundtrack and the end results did not meet my standards, so I’m sorry, GSW, but this time I’m not going to post my efforts.

Perhaps next time we’ll be luckier…

mel said...

@ isbum

Thanks for posting the Ferrante & Teicher. I''ve got an awful lot of catching up to do and I haven't heard it yet....

I will be able to start working on some of your requests soon.

Which State Fair do you want - the 1945, the 1962 or both?

GSW said...

@Mel - Thank you for trying a rip of the DVD. I thought I had seen a soundtrack but I could be wrong. I was mainly interested in The Piccolino. Do you have a good recording of the song? I have never heard a recording other than the one in the movie, which I love.

Also, any chance you might have a recording of Marlene Deitrich's Hot Voodoo number from Blonde Venus? The same as the version in the movie? I was able to grab the audio from a YouTube clip, but it is not the greatest quality. Trying to find something better. To me the long orchestral intro before she begins to sing is the best part of the scene. Love the way it is orchestrated.

mel said...

@ GSW

The Piccolino is from Top Hat, the soundtrack of which I have and will upload soon (please be patient as I have a lot on my plate in the real world right now) and the only other recordings of it that I have are two different ones by Mel Torme; so I will upload them too.

Sorry but I don't have Hot Voodoo.

http://rapidshare.com/files/354726472/TOP35.rar

If you love the song The Piccolino as much as I do I think you’ll probably like these two versions of it by Mel Torme. The first one was recorded as a single for C@pitol in 1950 with Pete Rugolo and the second for B3thl3h3m in 1957 from his LP Mel Torme Sings Fred Astaire with Marty Paich:

filmpac said...

Hey Mel,

Just spotted your commment to Isbum there, which made me realise I've been neglecting this space. I'm a fan of Ferrante & Teicher, so thanks to Isbum for ripping it, and you for tinkling my attention :)

Got two questions for you mate, because I got a couple of items a month or so back. Have these been shared before?

(1) Guys and Dolls. We've talked about this one before. Rocket did an LP rip, and was it you who did a DVD rip? Please, please, forgive my failing memory. Anyhow, I have on my computer this release...

http://www.deltamusic.co.uk/cd-product-details.php?delta_product_id=1689&delta_search=guys&type=

(2) I have what seems to be a 2-LP album called "The CBS Album of George Gershwin", by Percy Faith & his orchestra.

Interested?

Guys & Dolls is @320.
Percy Faith is @192.

No problem if these have been posted before, like I said, I do get way behind. Plus my memory ain't quite what it was. Please advise my friend.

mel said...

Hi filmpac,

Thanks for your message, been missing you.

When Sallie and I opened this shop, our first post was my DVD rip of Guys And Dolls. I was chuffed that it was so well accepted - I only did it because at that time I had never come across a proper soundtrack release. Subsequently, however, I came across a CD release with dubious origins (it was certainly not by an American record company, major or minor) and I think it was also a DVD rip, very similar to mine.

I don't remember Rocket contributing an LP rip of Guys And Dolls; there wasn't an LP release - the nearest to one was an EP with four songs on it and it was a studio recording.

I hope that clears up the confusion...

Although I have an enormous amount of Gershwin material, I don't have the Percy Faith double album and I haven't seen it around, so yes, I think it would be nice to have it here when you can spare the time.

My doc put me on Vitamin B12 + foric acid tabs for my memory. I don't know if it would work for you but I somehow don't think it does anything for me...

Thanks as always for your kind offers. It's good to be able to get "new" material to post here.

Cheers.

@ aberdeennj

My good friend, I am only now beginning to catch up with listening to music I have recently downloaded.

On January 21 you very kindly posted here the soundtrack of the obscure film I Married An Angel.

Unfortunately I have discovered that the only song from this film to become a hit and a standard for Rodgers and Hart, Spring Is Here, sung in the movie by, of course, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, is missing from the selection.

Not only is the soundtrack impossible to find elsewhere - it doesn't seem to exist (so I assume that yours was a DVD or tape rip) but I can't find a copy of the film itself either.

Would you have any idea how we could get hold of a copy of the soundtrack version of Spring Is Here?

filmpac said...

Percy Faith "The CBS Album Of George Gershwin" (1957), LP @192:

Please go back and listen to track 6 of I MARRIED AND ANGEL and you will hear jeanette and Nelson singing Spring Is Here. There are 11 tracks in total in the recordings. If any are missing, let me know and I will reupload it.

Aberdeennj

mel said...

@ aberdeennj

Gracious, on reading your comment I took a look and I saw that track 6 is missing! No wonder I didn't hear Spring Is Here...

The link is still available and I have downloaded it again.

There are two problems that I hadn’t noticed previously. On extracting, tracks 06 and 10 “cannot be created as the parameters are incorrect” whatever that may mean.

Would you be so kind as to re-upload just those two tracks?

Thanks very much.

By the way, you guys in the US are so lucky…

TCM has scheduled the movie I Married An Angel to be shown on Thursday, March 18, at 1:45 p.m. Eastern Time. Get your DVMs or video machines prepared!

filmpac said...

@ mel - Isbum passed on an email from you, don't see why we can't have this chat in public. Might help to clarify things for others too.

In reference to Guys & Dolls...

I mentioned Rocket did an LP rip, but forgot to leave the link. Here:
Rocket's LP rip <---

Now, let's take a look on Soundtrack Collector, here:
Soundtrack Collector <---

Both Rocket's LP (Motion Picture Tracks MPT-1) and the ASWAS CD I posted (Delta Leisure Group CD6733) are listed. And both are listed as legitimate releases, not in the later section often reserved for Bootlegs. Granted, both are on obscure record labels not seen before, so they could be "defacto" bootlegs, ripped directly from the movie.

A close examination of track timings shows Rocket's LP & the ASWAS CD to be remarkably close on most tracks. So, it seems possible to me that the LP provides the source for the CD. Erm, maybe.

Regardless, it seems to me that we now have THREE versions of Guys & Dolls, whereas once upon a time we were lamenting the existence of even ONE.

Assuming the other two are indeed defacto bootlegs, your own rip stacks up remarkably well IMHO :)

Isbum said...

@ All - Sallie says...

No cursing in the Golden Age!

mel said...

@ filmpac

Subject: Guys And Dolls (1955) Soundtrack

Regarding the Soundtrack Collector page, the Decca/Brunswick/Ace Of Hearts and CID from France are all the same four studio recorded songs that I mentioned in my e-mail:
1. I'll know
2. If I were a bell
3. Luck be a lady
4. A woman in love

As for the others, the only legit record company in my opinion is R#in0. They would have obtained the necessary rights to release their tracks on the compilation disc. My ears tell me that the Delta Leisure Group is actually a bootleg, similar to my effort.

As for Rocket’s LP rip, it looks very interesting. I have never heard of Motion Picture Tracks International. I wonder how they could possibly have squeezed all that music onto two sides of a single LP…

I’ll have to download it and give it a listen.

Cheers mate.

@ Javier

You are most welcome, and I'm glad you're happy with Yankee Doodle Dandy.

@Mel

Yes, really it is a great soundtrack, I have a version which downloaded here, thanks to kellyB, that included some songs.

If you have the Rhino Version of Yankee doodle dandy, it will be wonderful

Could I prevail on some kind soul to re-post the Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald recordings of Sweethearts and Bitter Sweet? Somehow I missed them when first posted.

I could post Love Me Tonight, Rose Marie and Up in Central Park if anyone wants them.

@ Mindy

Here you are, with thanks to our friend aberdeennj who contributed them originally.

@Mindy

Thank you for your tantalizing offer of the triple feature (Love Me Tonight/Rose Marie/Up In Central Park.
I'd be interested in all three but if that's too much, my preference is for the order in which you presented them. 1. Love 2.Rose 3.Up

@Mindy,

I too would LOVE to have all three recordings!!!!!!

While we're on the subject of Jeanette MacDonald, does anyone have a recording of The Merry Widow and Cat And The Fiddle soundtracks? They were released on an LP back in the 70's which I own, but I no longer own a turntable. :^(

@ Mindy

Looks like you've made an offer none of us can refuse...

@ Mel - My friend from Wisconsin who does Lp restorations has created a copy of "Saint Joan".
If you'd like a copy of his transfer, I could ask him to send you one.

If you are perfectly happy with the copy you have, that's fine Mel.

Just an offer, nothing more.

@ isbum

Thanks so much for thinking of me but I thanks to janus2810 I have a splendid copy. I appreciate the thought but really it's not necessary.
