@ mel & GSW -

Look what I found...it took a few months.....

"Flying Down To Rio / Hollywood Hotel".....
http://hotfile.com/dl/34305623/85716e5/Flying_Down_To_Rio__Hollywood_Hotel.rar.html

Includes ALL the minimal artwork for this apparent boot.

The sound quality of Hollywood Hotel leaves a bit to be desired, but Flying Down To Rio sounds pretty good, all thing considered.

Ever heard of Debroy Somers?

The link at Vintage Vinyl is dead.
A good source (isbum) suggested I contact you, to see if you could share it.

Thx!

Consists of 72 recordings from 1906 to 1994.

mel said...

@ anonymousremains

Thanks so much for the Debroy Somers and the Jessie Matthews links.

I have seen a few Somers' tracks in compilations out there but as I am not a fan of compilations with various artists I didn't download any of them. What I was really after was an album of just the Somers band but I don't think one exists.

I doff my hat to you for searching.

mel said...

@ anonymousremains

Listening right now to the Debroy Somers recordings from Internet Archive. They sound very good indeed. A great band, in my opinion.

Just in case you were wondering, my 78s by him were already very old when I was little!

Now, I know that this is off topic, not having anything to do with the Golden Age Of Hollywood, but I'd like you to listen to one of my top favourite records from what could be the mid-1930s - it's a really bouncy number by Jack Hylton:

Paris When It Sizzles - 2 vocal tracks!!

@ GSW: I somehow doubt that this is an LP rip. I heard it when it was first posted, and the Fred Astaire track is missing. According to soundtrackcollector.com, it was on the original LP release, but not on the CD re-issue. But - Thank you, and thanks to the original uploader.

AAAANYway .... for collectors, I added two vocal tracks which are not on the CD:
a) The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower - dialogue scene incl. Frank Sinatra singing (from the Rh*ino Sinatra box).
b) That Face - Fred Astaire.

The latter was a tricky one! I merged the first part of the song, which is played in the movie, with the second part, which Astaire performed on his TV show a few years earlier. (I could not simply use all of the TV show track since the middle part there was edited/shortened.) This way, we have, probably for the first time ever, the complete, unedited playback track as it was recorded by Astaire for his TV show, however never released in its entirety. Enjoy!

http://www.sendspace.com/file/tdcvy4'>http://www.sendspace.com/file/tdcvy4</a

(Nevertheless - Anyone got the (shortened) OST LP version?

GSW said...

@Musical - Thank you for the 2 songs. Great additions.
The version I posted is the shortened LP version (R3pr!se RS-6113) which only includes 13 tracks. The Astaire track from the original LP (R3pr!se R-6113)was ommited for this LP release. The LP track list confirms the track omission. These LP tracks are exactly the same as the cd tracks.

Too bad someone doesn't have the original LP release.

@musical and gsw - I have the mono LP of Paris When It Sizzles and can transfer the missing track!

Thanks for this material!

Buster said...

Whoops - rereading your comments about Paris When It Sizzles, looks like you are interested in the track That Face from an Astaire TV soundtrack LP. I have that one as well and will rip it. Let me know if I am reading you wrong (again).

Buster said...

And here - assuming this is what you are looking for - is That Face from the LP Another Evening with Fred Astaire.

http://rapidshare.com/files/369377393/That_Face.flac

GSW said...

@Buster - Long time no see. Thank you for the Astaire song. I was mainly interested in the original mono issue LP of Paris When It Sizzles with the 14 tracks. If you have this please post it.

Isbum said...

@ Buster - Did you take a break from blogging, or just a break from visiting Frankly?
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Nice to see you!

Buster said...

@ Isbum and GSW,

Thanks for the welcome back! I do try to keep up with the doings around here. Unfortunately I don't have the time to contribute much. Work has kept me way too busy for a long time, so I mostly keep to my own blog. Hope you are doing well!

MusicalGuy38 said...

Thanks II from my end! Listening to it right now. I have an old Astaire Show LP (sampler) in one town and an LP player somewhere else, so I am glad you provided us so quickly with a flac :-) Your (Buster) question surprises me ... Isn't it exactly the same track, just without bows? Or yet another edit? Anyway, would be great if you could post it as well! Thanks!

mel said...

I've been quietly lurking in the background, intrigued but confused and flummoxed about the recording of That Face you guys are looking for. The recording on my copy of Paris When It Sizzles is orchestral.

I have in my collection much of what Fred Astaire recorded - from his first recordings with his sister Adele and George Gershwin in the 1920s to his last recordings in the late 1970s.

I found only two recordings of the song; the first you have already discussed(from Three Evenings With Fred Astaire) and the second comes from his 1975 LP Attitude Dancing.

If it's any help in your searching, here it is:

http://rapidshare.com/files/369803081/Fred_Astaire_-_That_Face_-_from_LP_-_Attitude_Dancing.mp3

MusicalGuy38 said...

Thanks, Mel! Again not what I am looking for, however a nice surprise listen! :-) A nice, tender recording that suits the older Astaire's voice nicely ...

@ aberdeennj - would it be OK if I posted the Flower Drum Song link over at Mindy's Broadway Place as well - several people have been looking for it? All credit to you of course!

I'd send them over here, but there seems to be something weird going on with the pages - took me a bunch of tries to get the most recent comments on Mel & Sallie's - sometimes when I hit newest I got the soundtrack pages, other times nothing.

@ Mindy - This blog has more tic's than a Tennessee hound dog!

A few weeks back, before the fit hit the shan, I was talking to THXjay about starting fresh with a new b-spot.
*Just for that 'new blog' smell! ;)

Perhaps just leaving this behind as an archive and reminder of a by-gone era.

We'll see. Depends on how life without Varese goes, I suppose.

@ Friends of Sallie & Mel's Golden Age shop.

Sallie quit posting several month's into the opening of this and now Mel has decided to only post on private blogs.

The centerpiece and strength of this blog is that the shops have real people overseeing them and moderating the comments/content.

I'm in need of someone to take over. I'll happily adapt the sign to show your name on the marquee.

Apply by writing me
zippyljs@yahoo.com
if you are interested in moderating/owning this shop.

If I don't find someone, this shop will close, but will remain accessible as an archive here.

aberdeennj said...

Sad news indeed. I wish I new something about moderating.

Isbum said...

@ aberdeennj - There's really very little to do in moderating the "shop". As you know, people are rarely unpleasant around here.

What I ask for in a "shop" owner, is that they have a knowledge of the subject and are present to answer questions or requests.

We have some excellent people here in the various shops. None of them are available 24/7, but they stop by often enough that the shop doesn't appear to be abandoned.

Hi All! Loving this blog- completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of amazing stuff. Two requests; hope they're in the right place. Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe- this movie has been one of my favorite's for years and I have a couple of the songs that Dick Haymes sings in it, but don't know if there (hopefully?!) is a soundtrack out there as there are so many other great numbers. Betty Grable has a couple of great ones.
The other is Three Coins in the Fountain by Jule Styne.
