To start Memory Laine month, I’d like to offer my three Frankie Laine collections which I hope yo’ll enjoy. The first one is from his years with his first major label, Mercury (he recorded a few sides for Bel Tone and Atlas before that) which began in 1946 and ended in 1951 when he signed with Columbia:

http://rapidshare.com/files/50793926/FLM.rar.html

From his years with Columbia here are some of his most popular recordings which takes us up to the mid 60s:

http://rapidshare.com/files/50810048/FLC.rar.html

Blazing Saddles should have been included in the third collection which is a miscellany of some of his other popular recordings:

http://rapidshare.com/files/52278374/FL3.rar.html

For me, these are all very much in the “nostalgia” category but that’s not to deny the fact that he was a wonderful singer who had a tremendous appeal and a unique way of putting over a song.

mel,

Thank you for starting Memory Laine month with such authority.

One of the things which affects me about Laine is the man's integrity in a world where stubbornness is substituted for it.

It's there in his singing. And it was just as present in his life and his social actions which sometimes outstripped that of his peers -- but because he never behaved like a showboat they mostly drew attention to the causes in which he believed rather than to himself.

@chimesatmidnight

I was having problems with the links to Mediafire. Kept getting some kind of home page rather than the normal download link.

Thanks for follow up.

Also, 100% agreement refarding Frankie Laine: one of my childhood idols...and that hasn't changed in over 60 years.

@constantino

Thanks for George Auric. Would also appreciate the Adolf Deutsch

stubbins said...

ruggo,

Thank you for what you wrote about the Laine.

Sometimes I have trouble with getting mediafire to download for me -- the download button just "hiccups" and reloads the page rather than beginning the download.

So I will use a different site for it when I reup it.

constantino,

Thanks for restoring the Auric! I am such a fan of his... and his work for English studios is often quite different than his French work.

Now... there was a highly regarded recording a few years back of a ballet Auric wrote?

Does anyone have that one???

stubbins said...

ruggo and constantino,

I have the Deutsch, too... but I have never ripped it.

There is a big part of it which delights Stromberg and Morgan and just makes me think, "Gee -- Carl Stalling was just so much BETTER at this than Adolf was.": it's George Washington Slept Here which is just too Mickey Moused (I know -- wrong studio) for me.

This is the 2nd record that Frankie & Michel Legrand made together. It was recorded in the USA.
The first one was recorded in Paris and was called "Foreign Affair".
If anyone of you has it and would accept to share it, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot mel to show us the way and ruggo to complete mel's outstanding job with your submissions of this great, great singer.

By the way mel, yes I did pick up the Robert Farnon at "Singin' & Swingin". Thank you for the tip anyway.

@ quinlan – Great minds think alike, I just upped Frankie’s “Reunion In Rhythm” too. I was also going to ask for the first one he did with Michel Legrand, so I’ll second your request. That leaves me with posting this one. I’ve always been a sucker for live concerts, and it seems these are few on the ground for Frankie. This is a DVD rip, recorded in 1976…

Huge Thanks for the Bernard Herrmann! I'd never heard anything from THE BATTLE OF NERETVA before. It's fascinating to hear the some of his unused Torn Curtain score worked into track 9 and the garden theme from Farenheit 451 worked into track 8.

Btw, I found THE BRIDE WORE BLACK suite if anyone else wants it. Part of Bernard Herrmann Film Scores: From Citizen Kane To Taxi Driver conducted by Elmer Bernstein.

yes, i second that thank you for revenge of the ninja. while we're on the topic of ninjas, i'd like to request the ost's to "shogun's ninja", a sonny chiba flick from the 80's, and the ost to "kage no gundan" aka "shadow warriors" which was an ongoing tv series in japan, also featuring sonny chiba from the 80's. if anybody can fulfill either of those requests i'll seriously wet my pants...and im not talking about peeing either...

Does anyone have a nice rip of the Paul Newman soundtrack to Harper 1966 by Johnny Mandel, I don't think it has ever had a CD release?

Ennioman

stubbins said...

donovan's brain,

I never noticed that.

I never would have thought to look.

You just made life infinitely more than two tracks richer.

For me... Herrmann's Truffaut music undoes a creative hernia of "smallness" which too many of his studio pushed him into... shrunkeness of story, of character and of range due to the studio's desire for hit title songs.

In the sixties his work for Hitchcock, too, became rooted in neuroses and pathology. It's exhilirating, it's truthful and in the end... it limited the artist who could still write better than any other composer for the Jane Eyres and the Ghosts and Mrs. Muirs of life.

In Truffaut's work... Herrmann's vast (and wonderfully unique) heart could pump away freely.

I don't know if you have a copy but I posted Herrmann's recording of his remarkable Wuthering Heights opera. In it The Ghost and Mrs. Muir's sea becomes the moors and never from lazy self-cannibalization.

It doesn't stop being remarkable with the music -- Lucille Fletcher wrote one of the best libretti ever -- in truth, it is a model of adaptation. And between the writing and the score Herrmann is proved so right -- these characters should sing because rather than embellishing the novel, it opens it to new lights and shadows.

(Of course, it's just as remarkable that Bernard Herrmann was even married to Lucille Fletcher or his other two wives -- three of the most intelligent, kind, gorgeous women of his era married to -- Bernard Herrmann.)

If you'd like, I'll repost immediately.

Also... beyond the requests you posted... are there any other Herrmann tracks you seek from, say, the Southern Cross/Label X recordings like The Fighting Kentuckian suite... or from the recordings Michael Fine produced for Koch in the late eighties and nineties?

I have only the Sedares recording of the symphony (which I admire and enjoy).

Now... do you have any of the Phase Four recordings of concert music?

I have my cheerfully perverse urge to not just hear but LIVE with Herrmann's mega G-force version of Holst's The Planets and a few more...

The Sibelius/Dukas/Liszt... and especially the Ives Symphony No. 2.

I live with a lot of imagined Herrmann CBS radio concert programs in my head, you know.

Whenever I meet a conductor or musician or composer who was in something resembling their deformative years when Herrmann was doing those concerts, I'll ask if they ever listened in... and what, if any, influence those had on them?

Sometimes the answers could move me to tears.

stubbins said...

ruggo,

WONDERFUL Waxman posts!!

During the weekend whose name must not be spoken I posted about for how long Michael Fine had wanted, NEEDED to record Joshua.

And also about the talk that he is going to record a just as talked about piece from the start of Waxman's movie career for the French version of Liliom.

Years ago I bought the Terezin disc for, well, just that. And it is a piece I care for and which moves me.

But it's the Requiem Ebraico which keeps blowing me away.

If you don't have the Waxman Goyana collection of smaller pieces, I'll be happy to post it.

Does anyone have the Herrmann Phase 4 Great British Film Music?

stubbins said...

scoredaddy,

Well, there's this place called frankly not where these four guys keep posting stuff which tickles stirs and shakes each other...

Like you, I've been looking for quite awhile.

Like you, I've had the same lack of success outside of moodswingsmusic (which is just plain an exemplary site) and scavenging through a few boards.

La Layenda has set up a classical page where we might want to pitch in. My favorite download there has been the splendid Jochum recording from the early fifties of the Orff (orff! orff!) Trionfi. That stuff works better when it ain't a sonic spektakala.

So here's my other suggestion.

Let's pool.

Since you brought it up... name a composer or a performer.

And us kids who eat at this lunch table will give what we got.

Just so you know -- one of the real positive pleasures in life has been finding how much scoredaddy, ruggo, constantino and chimez SHARE of what's rare.

I mean, how often have any of us been in any sort of gathering, brought up Bax, Auric, Hovhaness et al -- and found heaps and heaps of recognition AND music to share?

(I know I didn't mention Copland. That's only because he's on postage stamps.)

I do have a rip of Wuthering Heights, sent to me from a generous person who like you is a great fan of the opera. It's a piece I always get the urge to listen to during the fall and early winter months.

I'd love to get Herrmann's recording of THE PLANETS. I'm embarrassed to say I had it at one point but somehow it's disappeared. I heard Holst's music years before I knew Herrmann had conducted a recording and thought how perfect it would fit in with Herrmann's body of work, like kindred spirits.

Outside of the pieces he composed I haven't heard much of the concert music he conducted. I'm wondering if you have any of these,

Silent Noon
Currier & Ives Suite
Clarinet quintet "Souvenir de Voyage"
Echoes - string quartet
Sinfonietta for Strings, an eerie precursor to the music for Psycho.
I'd also love to hear THE KENTUCKIAN Suite you have.

I have the Unicorn CD of Herrmann conducting his Symphony #1 and another piece he composed, The Fantasticks which I'll upload tonight.

Also in the pipeline are Max Steiner's SHE, CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE plus Frank Skinner's ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. The last three are scheduled for recording in 2008.

scoredaddy,

Juno is a pretty amazing musical adaptation of Juno and the Peacock by O'Casey (which Hitchcock, who revered the play filmed as he had seen it on stage).

He wrote the book, music and lyrics -- he may have orchestrated it, too.

Originally the hope was that Cagney would play the Captain and Shirley Booth as Juno. They got their Juno (and it is her best musical performance -- which is saying a lot as you know very well) but ultimately the Captain was played by Melvyn Douglas at the start of his second sustained peak as a character actor.

Jack MacGowran (great actor) is the Captain's parasite Joxer. And M-G-M fixture Tommy Rall is the son/IRA informant.

I love this score. The production was just too much, it was out of sync with the zeitgeist of Blitzstein's close friend (and acolyte) Bernstein's West Side Story -- and its tragedy was mishandled (along with everything else) by the ill-chosen director Jose Ferrer.

donovan's brain,

I'm going to enjoy that.

I had met Stromberg in the early nineties and couldn't have liked and respected him more. If anyone I'd met, he reminds of the truly gifted human Kenneth Schermerhorn who to me remains after death one of Bernstein's best proteges. (The other is JoAnn Faletta who's very, very much alive and wonderful.)

I very much like Stromberg and Morgan's approach to Herrmann. As grateful as I am to McNeeley... his Herrmann molecules tend towards the widespread. (Not to be confused with having a wide stance.) There's integration and he is a good conductor... but Stromberg to me doesn't leave a gap when shifting from the micro to the macro which is essential in great Herrmann.

It's why I particularly look forward to the Walking Distance. I enjoy the McNeely... but I'm always redacting it at least a little as I hear it which I don't do with his other recordings.

It's as though he leaned too heavily on the idea of Herrmann's small units of small ensembles... rather than what they merge to create.

Thank you very much for locating On Dangerous Ground! I've been looking for it for months.

filmpac said...

@ amadues - Erm, Steiner's RKO Years is in... mono?

All jokes aside, yes, you seem to be correct! I took a look using a wave editor and all the sound is on channel 1 only. Also, I noticed that playing it in Winamp, the sound comes out of *both* speakers, even though there is only a waveform on Channel 1. Although if I throw the balance control to the far right, I get nothing. So maybe Winamp is cleverer than I thought, and somehow adjusts.

To be honest, I don't know how that came about, since it wasn't my rip. Fortunately, there is a solution at hand, but it's a bit technical.

You'll need a program called dbPowerAmp, which is a music converting program. You can get this at demonoid.com, if you don't already have it. It's an essential program, believe me.

The latest versions of dbPowerAmp come with something called "DSP Effects", and this is where the magic comes in. One of the options there is a "channel mapper". Using this, you can re-record Channel 1 onto Channel 2. Voila, simulated stereo sound.

However, to be honest, I didn't really notice any great difference in sound quality. The original recordings are 70 years old, and the bitrate was only 128 to begin with.

Hope that helps!

Hello people¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

I hope that all of you are ok

I'm from Spain, but I put here an anouncement to the people who lives in Los Angeles. It's an interesting event for all os us:

The art and craft of scoring music for motion pictures will be explored in detail during the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' three evening series "The Music Soundtrack: A Composers' Forum of Contemporary Scoring Technique." Sessions will be held on September 20, September 27 and October 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

"The Music Soundtrack" will offer an in-depth look at the music scoring process from the perspective of motion picture composers themselves. Each week's topic will be illuminated by film clips, onstage discussions with guests and questions from the audience.

The series schedule is as follows:

September 20 – Traditional Scores
Moderated by Charles Bernstein ("Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision"), with six-time Oscar® nominee Lalo Schifrin ("Cool Hand Luke") and Academy Award® winner Jan A.P. Kaczmarek ("Finding Neverland").

September 27 – Alternative Scores
Moderated by Oscar nominee Bruce Broughton ("Silverado"), with Mychael Danna ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Oscar nominee Mark Isham ("A River Runs Through It") and Rolfe Kent ("Sideways").

October 4 – The Music Team
Featuring George S. Clinton ("Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery"), Michael Giacchino ("The Incredibles"), John Powell ("United 93") and Mike Flicker (music editor "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery").

Passes for the entire "The Music Soundtrack" series will be available starting September 4 at a cost of $30 for the general public and $20 for Academy members and students with valid ID. Passes may be purchased by mail, in person at the Academy during regular business hours or online at www.oscars.org/events. Tickets for individual evenings, if available, will be $10 at the door.

The Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater is located at 1313 Vine Street in Hollywood. For more information, call (310) 247-3600.

And now, a rare request but a loving one: I have the original soundtrack of "THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS" (great, great) but I want all
the songs that my beloved Michelle Pffeifer sings in the picture, but
don't appear on the original soundtrack. Someone have these songs extracted from dvd or something like this? Or there is a promo? THANKS

scoredaddy,

Once again... we have mirrors in our collections. I bought that the day it came out. There was the music, there were Russell Warner's reorchestrations of Let 'Em Eat Cake and its wonderful libretto, there was Larry Kert's voice (still spirited but by then so dry it could be used as an exfoliant) and, my lifelong fixation, Jack Gilford.

I listen to both at least a few times yearly.

I'm going to start posting some pieces which reflect (to me) interests which people express here.

First one will be Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony.

stubbins said...

scoredaddy,

(I think that's the title.)

I've got some old Westminster recordings on my brain. (That was my label of both choice and not really having much of a choice when I was in high school. Somewhere someone has a site featuring lots of their wonderful 70 reissue album covers.)

One is the Adrian Boult recording of Vaughan Williams' Folk Suite, etc.

Who knows?

Just figured I'd ask. (I asked the dog first but she is indifferent to anything that you can't play with a swishing cactus needle -- very old school she is.)

@ All -

Re: FRANKLYNOT: The First Jazz Project on the main page of this blog -

When contributing your favorite jazz instrumental to our proposed compilation, do make sure that the piece of music was written specifically as an instrumental.

I'll look the other way if some lyrics were written after the instrumental had become popular.
However, I would prefer straight instrumental tracks over anything else.

@ filmpac - I don't know about "Theme from Alfie". Was it a song? I've never seen the film.

Two very different interpretations of Hans Andersen stories...

AUGUSTE ENNA: THE LITTLE MATCHGIRL
ALEXANDER VON ZEMLINSKY: THE LITTLE MERMAID

The first is a gentle, one act opera... charming, brief, sweet and very popular in Denmark.

The second is among Zemlinsky's masterworks. Whatever influences you can recognize in it... it surpasses in both its originality and expressive power.

The conducter is Thomas Dausgaard... you will be hearing more from him here soon enough.

@ isbum - Sonny Rollins wrote the score to Alfie (starring Michael Caine), including the track I posted for the Jazz Project. The hit song was just called Alfie, and contained the memorable line "what's it all about, Alfie". The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

To complicate things a little more, Cilla Black did the song version for the UK release, and Cher did the US release. This was back in the day when movies had to have a memorable theme song.

Rest assured, the "Alfie's Theme" I posted by Sonny Rollins has nothing to do with the song. Not a case of an instrumental version of a song. Rollins' score is pure jazz all the way, with orchestrations by Oliver Nelson. The group includes Phil Woods, Kenny Burrell, and J.J. Johnson, and they swing hard on all tracks.

Tell you what I'll do. One Alfie soundtrack coming right up.

Hi, a few requests:

1. Roma violenta (Maurizio & Guido De Angelis),
2. Any '70s Bixio / Frizzi / Tempera
3. McKenna's Gold (Quincy Jones)

Here's one that perhaps some will already have, but hopefully of use to someone:

Luis Bacalov,
"Django", 1966
(24 tracks incl. five song versions + score):

Also, if anyone made it to the end of "Eugenie" (thanks for your comment about it, Isbum), here's the CD boot of the original LP, which is quite different (with thanks to nomwl1):

Bruno Nicolai,
"Marquis De Sade's 'Philosophy in the boudoir'", 1969

Pick a jazz instrumental that is something you love.
A piece of music that perhaps expresses your taste or personality.

The finished compilation will list your screen name and the track you donated to the project.

I am all for variety, but if different takes on the same piece show up, it's fine.

I just remembered I've got the charming West End musical he wrote in the 70's with Johnny Mercer (definitely Mercer's finest stage lyrics) based on the twice filmed Good Companions.

I'm going to find and upload it.

It was GOING to be a success -- but then (like Bert Lahr's last vehicle Foxy) it got buried by a newspaper strike.

I don't think that exact sort of situation will happen again.

Now -- get the cast!

@ Benoit-
Thanks for the MacGyver. I understand that there's an actual soundtrack out there somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. Apparently it was released in Europe only; at least that's what I read on the net.

@ zarm-
Thanks for the Sky High short. I also hadn't heard of any release and was hoping someone here might have a promo of the score. Oh, well.

Currently looking for:
The actual MacGyver release
The full score for Shining Through; I've got the short one that's 12 tracks and basically covers from Berlin on, but that's only half of the movie. If anyone has the whole thing, it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

@ whoever - Did whoever asked for it ever find the Bolero, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, that they were after? I've turned up one on a disc with just 4 tracks, as follows...

01 - Bolero (Orchestre National De France)
02 - La Valse
03 - Daphnis et Chloe Suite No 2
04 - Alborada del Graciosa

Appears to be a 1990 release, by CBS Records. Leonard Bernstein, with the New York Philharmonic & Orchestre National De France. Ring any bells? Interested?

Wow, I've been away a while it seems. Lots to catch up on. Speaking of which, I wonder if anyone can help find a few so-far-undiscovered-by-me scores to the films of the master writer/director, David Mamet.

I've already got STATE AND MAIN and HEIST (both great scores) but was particularly looking for...

HOUSE OF GAMES (Alaric Jans)
THINGS CHANGE (Alaric Jans)
HOMICIDE (Alaric Jans)
OLEANNA (Rebecca Pidgeon)
GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS (complete score?)
THE WINSLOW BOY (Alaric Jans)
THE WATER ENGINE (Alaric Jans)
THE SPANISH PRISONER (Carter Burwell)
SPARTAN (Mark Isham)
EDMOND (Bobby Johnston)

I don't think these have ever been released, so if anyone has a line on 'em, it would be wonderful.
Thanks! :)

Here's a long shot - perhaps ????

Some years ago, Barbara Cook & Michael Ball did a beautiful on-stage duet of 'People Will Say We're In Love'. I think it was at a Royal performance of some sort. I had a copy but the tape had sound blemishes on it & was pretty useless. 'You Tube' apparently had the clip of this performance, but it's no longer available.

Has anybody still got it, and could share? Don't care so much about the video, just the audio would be fine.
Alternatively, is there another site/blog on the net that would be worth trying???

Thanks all.
