@Ruggo - I belive Mediafire restricts files at 100mb each which a problem as the audio files I have are all going tio be over 100mb, unless that restriction is in place for people who don't create an account.

I'll take another look at them

@Ian, Dusty etc...yup, it seems there is a conflict between DownTHemAll and File Factory. I pasted link in IE and downloaded Disc 1 in 3 minutes. I've noticed, as probably everyone else has, that speed is determined by the time of day. Megaupload never works for me at week-ends but on week days at about 9-11pm (UK time) there is never any problem. With Rapidshare I've a premium account so there is never a problem.

@Dom1 - 3 minutes!!!!!!!

It's taking about an hour each disc for me :(
It's strolling along at 45k download speed and I've got broadband!

Having said that, the fastest download speeds I ever get is around 200k (if I'm lucky) and that's even with a Rapidshare premium account. Most other hosts are 30-60k at best.

As a matter of interest, what kind of download speeds are folks getting here?
Is my experience normal?

Anonymous said...

@THXjay...it fluctuates and totally dependant on what time you download. I was surprised by the speed as much as you especially since I was not using a Download Manager but the standard in built one. As I don't know which part of the UK you are based, it is difficult to compare. The area that I'm in is not terribly good for reception...digital TV fluctuates, I can sometimes hear other people's conversation on the phone line...my broadband at about midnight til 01:00am struggles to get a connection to Firefox...it's crazee.

@Ian...you can always split a file, many downloads of that size are often split and probably easier to upload as well as download.

I'm with Orange and up until recently used the Speedtouch usb modem. With that I used to get around 3.5mb (on a 4mb connection) but I have just bought a wireless modem/router and for some strange reason I now only get 1.5mb speed!

I used to get a pop-up in the tray telling me my connection speed with the usb modem but I can't seem to find a way of seeing the connection speed with the wireless router!
I've just run a couple of those online speed tests and it comes out at 1.6mb download with a 400k upload.

Still, it's better then dial-up :)

of all the network releases, I'd most like to get my hands on Man In A Suitcase...I see that Laurie Johnson's Jason King is about to be released.

I've downloaded and listened to some of the various versions of Captain Scarlet, and here's what I've determined so far.
In 2003 Silva Screen, in association with Fanderson, releases a single Captain Scarlet CD. It has 28 tracks.
The next year, Silva America releases their own version.
It has only 20 tracks but is about the same length. (Give or take a few seconds.) After listening to both versions, the main difference is that small tracks, like Staccato Beat and Cenutry 21 Sting have been combined into adjacent tracks. Furthermore, multiple tracks for single episodes have also been combined. (There's even still a little gap between the tracks.) Track 20 of the Silva America version is a combination of tracks 26 and 28 of the Silva Screens version.
Simply put, they're the same music, just combined in slightly different sequence. all other things being equal, the Silva Screens version gives one control over what you hear. I've now acquired 320k versions of both.
As far as I can tell, Fanderson never issued their own set (except for the mini CD drama records,) probably because of the terms in which they helped compile the Silva Screens edition. (But it may have been what encouraged them to get into the records business in the first place.
Hope this clears things up.

@Ian...many thanks for Department S...File Factory was incredibly fast, all discs downloaded...3 mins each, with a suitable gap in between. I must say File Factory is the fastest dl service I have come across.

@ budarc - What about calling it
"Things you should FAQ'n know."? ;)

That's good! Seriously though, it would be good to disperse with this information for any newcomers, especially the classic "What does SNS mean?" question we always get (I know, because I remember asking it once myself!) It'll also help to remind schmucks like me not to post in-print albums before Saturday. ;)

Thanks for that last bit of treasures, soundguy28. Oh, would you look at that? It's June already!
