A few years ago, I was simply a collector of Film and Television music. I thought that I was pretty much alone in my love for this, what seemed like, an unusual hobby. One day however, I was googling around looking for some info on a film when I stumbled upon a forum. Nothing special about that you may say, but this forum had a thread called "Movie Soundtracks".

This intrigued me as I always love to read about other collector's thoughts. Upon entering this little discussion I found literally hundreds of "links" to soundtrack downloads!

Now, up until this point, I had never even bothered to try and download music from the web. Having worked with good quality audio equipment in the past and having heard very early mp3 sound, I had no intention of collecting that "rubbish".

On that site there were some really interesting scores posted and I just couldn't resist trying out this new-fangled downloading business. I dubiously clicked one of the links and was taken to file hosting site and, after a few seconds of getting my bearings, I was on my way to my very first digital score download!

As soon as the file was downloaded, I had to figure out what to do with it (remember I was new to all this back then) so googled around trying to find out what a "rar" file was :)

Once that was sorted I was in proud possession of an mp3 soundtrack. I burned this to an audio CD straight away, anxious to see how good (or bad) it sounded!
To my surprise it actually sounded pretty damn good!
It was a far cry from those previous experiences with early mp3 files I had heard. Obviously big advances had been made in the interim years.

So, my hobby took on a new lease of life and I found a new passion for collecting scores.

The next discovery came with a link to a "blog" that shared soundtracks, this in turn had links to many other blogs who also shared soundtracks. I was in score heaven!
I must have spent the first several weeks literally downloading music every waking hour of the day trying to catch-up with everything I had missed so far. My collection grew in size like at an alarming rate!

Whilst wading through all those blog links I happened to find one called "You Don't Have To Visit This Blog" and I couldn't believe the incredible sense of community that had built up there. As some of you will already know, that site was setup and run by nomwl1. He had somehow managed to pull together this amazing collection of people who were not only sharing music but actually talking to each other too!

It's very rare in blogland to get something so special, and to think that nomwl1 had created this incredible resource from somewhere as humble as a public library computer!!
He would check in as often as he could and bring his files with him to upload to the blog :)
Of course, the large amount of regular contributors was the thing that kept it going, but he oversaw it beautifully. I always looked forward to his long (usually very long) posts when he came back after a short absence. Always interesting, humorous and full of charm.

Back in those early days I was still new to blogging and didn't say much apart from requesting the odd score, after a while I became "friends" with quite a few of the regulars there. Unfortunately, there are some people in this world who aren't happy unless they're causing problems for someone else. Poor nomwl1's blog became the target of a certain individual who was determined to ruin the site for everyone and because nomwl1 couldn't "police" the blog 24/7, it was open to abuse!

The site was ruined and it lost that "meeting place feel it had always had.

This is when isbum had the idea to setup a new meeting place where everyone from YDHTVTB could regroup and continue to share without the intervention of the troublemaker.
So isbum and filmpac put their heads together and came up with "FranklyNot". I joined the team to help them out with blog design and general blog admin stuff.

I also started my own site around this time too. I had always been a big fan of music featured in Crime/Spy Films & Television series' but there wasn't anywhere on the web dedicated to it. I decided to create a music blog just for this very genre and, after a couple of years scouring blogs, I had increased my own collection by some margin. From these ideas The Crime Lounge was born!

But back to Frankly...

As you are all aware, isbum has had some troubles recently (to put it mildly) and has had to leave his current residence, obviously losing his internet connection. He's not sure how long it will be before he gets back on his feet and back online but rest assured he WILL return in the future!

This, along with the fact that filmpac hasn't been in contact for a few weeks. The last time we spoke he was having some serious computer problems. I'm hoping that there is nothing more serious wrong at his end!
Without filmpac to help out, I have been really busy over at The Artwork Department keeping things up-to-date.
This is the main reason why I couldn't commit to taking over here at Frankly, there just aren't enough hours in the day :)

Unfortunately, isbum's situation came out of the blue (for me at least) and with the time differences, we didn't really get enough time to discuss things properly. If we had known a few weeks in advance that things were going to go this way, we could have tried to work something out regarding the blog.

So, my question to you dear friends is simple...

Do we try and continue as normal?

I appreciate that some of you may prefer to go elsewhere if isbum isn't here to oversee Frankly. Remember however that he intends to return as soon as he can. I know quite a few of you have already began setting up a temporary shelter until out leader returns :)

I somehow feel like I'm being unfaithful to my good mate isbum by deserting this place. We haven't closed down so I'm not sure of the reasoning behind going elsewhere!
The Filmscorium has slowed down recently but is still "open for business".

I have archived the April Filmscorium (which ran up to the 4th May) and opened this new one.

We will see how it goes for now. I will leave the future of Frankly up to you guys. I know izzy would want us to continue. He did ask me to carry on the role of "Boss" but I said that I couldn't really commit to it 100% with all my other duties (Art Dept, Crime Lounge etc) and we left it in the air! He lost connection and we hadn't really discussed it properly.

Give me you thoughts guys (and girls) and let me know how YOU would like to continue!

One thing that is certain is that it would be a damn shame for all hard work put into this site to go to waste!

Some of you may be worried about future problems because of the Varese situation. Well, as far as I am concerned the matter is resolved. isbum has had a personal message from the guys at Varese who have been very reasonable and are happy with our efforts to remove their posts. The Art Dept has also stopped any Varese shares and they are happy with that, so as long as we all ignore their releases, they won't bother us!

KevinG said...

@THXjay

I would love for this blog to continue, as you said it would be a shame for all the hard work to go to waste.

I'm sure Isbum will settle and re-surface when he is ready and I would love for this place to be just as he left it when he comes back, with friends waiting to say hello.

I say, carry on boys and girls, as you were...

DL Warner said...

I'm still here.

I do wander. I wandered before I found this blog, and I'll wander afterwords.

But that doesn't mean I won't still drop by.

Ruggo said...

I'm running short of time on my way out of town, therefore I won't run off at the mouth.

My experience with downloading and blogdom are identical to THXjay...that could have been my story, including YDHTVTB.

No matter what I do elsewhere (wandering as DLWarner puts it), my first loyalties will remain here.

Let's keep this thing going.

We deserve it!

Rocket From Mars said...

well done THXjay!

I really appreciate your very thoughtful and insightful entry. I agree whole-heartedly with your take on the situation. Plus you answered one of my main concerns: who'll be keeping an eye on things (even if it's in a limited capacity) while isbum sorts things out. Knowing it's you I feel 'franklyYES' is in great hands!

I say...lets keep the 'party' going 'Commander'(ala you know who)!

I have a non-soundtrack related request...does anyone out there have a Greatest Hits album by an English group called Racey? It was issued on cd a year or two ago in the UK.

In particular I'm looking for their song:

'Kitty'

Thanks.

I haven't written much, but this has been one of my favourite communities in the net and it's pretty sad that/if it's ending. I've learned a lot about soundtracks and especially some of the older and more obscure stuff. I would like to thank Isbum for all this. Hopefully something similar will emerge in the future.

muratori said...

@ Southview212 : many, many thanks. You are one of the best friendly contributors of this blog, and surely the one I disturb the most ;-)

SO THANKS FOR ALL MUSIC I DISCOVER HERE !

bistis6 said...

Absolutely remain open! We must honor Isbum's hard work and dedication. And what a joy it would be for him, when he's back on his feet, to find that his houseguests have kept the place to his standards.

Our Conductor might be taking a little break but we still have one heck of an Assistant Conductor and Engine Crew on board!

Sure, we may need to break every now and then to switch rails, but that's no reason to jump off.

Hey, I'm riding this train 'till the rail runs out. Hopefully some new track can be laid and it'll never run out of steam because as long as the sign says "all aboard", I'll be setting pretty in a window seat.

But it's not watching all the beautiful scenery pass on by that makes the ride so magical, it's the fellow travelers you meet along the way.

Here's to the greatest passenger section ever!

GSW said...

THXjay I could not have said what needed to be said better. Isbum is my friend and my loyalties are here and will always remain here. What others do is there own business. Isbum will be back and I will be here when he returns.

Southview212 said...

I'll keep checking this site. When it's back in full swing, I will be here.
I've been in touch with isbum, and he intends to return.

Nuno Machado said...

I would say that we must continue as usual, until the day where Isbum appear online and resolve his problems outside of the blog.
When that day happen, there should be a debate with all of us, giving our thoughts or ideas, and so let Isbum decide on what will be the next step he thinks will be the better for the blog.

* Play "Auld Lang Syne" song * :)
Whatever happens thank you everyone for all the music that you kindly shared.

TinyPlanet said...

@THXjay

Yes, please remain open. I'll still come here on a daily basis

I feel that the doom and gloom atmosphere is a bit unwarranted. I think we should continue here as before. I also feel the "lifeboat" can continue. A backup plan never hurts, and some interesting things may be put there that cannot be here.....

As for interference, other sites seem to be fine enough. The shrine for instance. So no Varese...big deal. Those who need to can still find them around.I say we just suck it up and continue as normal.

Anonymous said...

you got my support J

sorei said...

I am never far away ;)

(due to health reasons my active support is limited though, I am waiting for an operation to change that and I will be back to "normal" in august I guess. I am right-handed and I cannot use my right arm, or: only very limited, until after the op)

djhippo said...

Please, keep up the Forum!

THXjay said...

I would just like to say how much I appreciate your loyalty to the site. I'm sure Izzy would be very proud!

It seems everyone is in agreement, so as far as I'm concerned we are officially "business as usual" :)

The only difference you will notice is the lack of David Hemmings sticking his ugly mug in the place :)

I'll keep the Filmscorium rotating each month and try to keep out any rogue comments that find their way in here. Other than that girls and boys, carry on as usual!...

JADSTERSDAD said...

@THXjay

Thanks for the thoughts. I had no intention of 'deserting' and will still drop by. It's also good that others are trying to keep us 'afloat' as a community, though. I'm sure we're all with Isbum and will be here when he returns. All this discussion just proves what a thoughtful and considerate lot we all are!

So to repeat my request made elsewhere, I'd be grateful if anyone has come across a new Legrand entitled 'Oscar and the Lady in Pink'. If the weekend blog is still going to function, I'm happy to wait until then, of course.

Cheers.

THXjay said...

The usual weekend special will indeed continue so we'll see you there friday night ;)

@ THXjay --
Lovely opening to the thread, man. Good to relive the history of YDHTVTB and the old days...

My two cents: As long as the blog's here, I'll be. Scores or not. Even if it becomes just talk between friends. I love you guys out there. I'll be around as long as you'll have me. :)

--mcc

--mcc said...

@ Varese Sarabande --

And you guys... Much love to you all, as well! Most of my score knowledge comes from the now DECADES of great releases from the good folks at VS. In fact often at Christmastime, at some point, my local film-score-fan friends join me in a chant-along to the classic tune "Feliz Navidad" as we substitute the proper title with "Varese Sarabande." :)

Love the recent VS work on The Goonies & The Manhattan Project. Keep those 80's scores and classics coming! Might I request Varese look into the following...

Full scores to all the remaining DIE HARD and LETHAL WEAPON films (Michael Kamen) full score remasters - if possible - to THE NAKED CITY and THE KILLERS (two scores by Miklos Rozsa)... and any and all film scores by maverick Japanese filmmaker TAKASHI MIIKE.

Great, great stuff. Thanks! :)

--mcc said...

One more thing, would anyone know anything about any sort of available release of the score to Richard Kelly's film, THE BOX?

I'd heard there was to be a release of the score of the film as a bonus disc with the DVD release but that didn't appear to happen. And soundtrackcollector.com has no listing of anything yet? Any leads on a release date, or news of any kind? If so, thanks! :)

Where is the March request archive?

Now, you have post the April Requests but there aren't the March requests.

Thank you very much¡¡

Here in Spain (Barcelona) it is raining¡¡¡

THXjay said...

@--mcc - Couldn't agree with you more. I have always been a big fan of Varese as a label and have many releases (on actual real CD's :) of theirs myself. I'll second the requests for THE NAKED CITY and THE KILLERS (if you're listening VS) scores.

@Steve - Franck Pourcel is one of Easy Listening's great masters. You'll find many of his albums on the various Easy blogs, and they are always worth a listen. You can find his "Bond album" at my place HERE. And some scans of the LP cover in The Art Dept HERE

@ALEX - We had a little trouble back in March regarding the Varese posts and isbum deleted the whole month to remove them as he was unsure what to do. We later realised that he probably didn't need to delete the whole thing but it's too late now!

@ ALL - Do please take notice of the message above the box where you comment. Varese have been very understanding with us, and I don't wish to rub their noses in it by having people keep requesting their releases!

Feel free to discuss Varese in general but any posts with requests will have to be deleted I'm afraid.

And I see the odd "worried" comment. Let me just reiterate that we are NOT going anywhere. As long as we keeping building it, I presume you'll all keep coming :)

Thanks for the kind offers to help out but the Frankly Army has drafted in Private GSW (who kindly offered) to help out for a while until General isbum returns :)

If we need anymore help though, you will be the first ones in line.

I see that the odd Varese title is still getting through. Please check to see what label a score is on before you request/post it.

Thanks again!

@ THXjay & all.

First wqith thanks to THXjay for habving taken the time to convey the story of how he took his baby steps into this uniquely generous environment.

Mine started very much the same as I was looking for some Turkish rock music from way back when, of course the ever friendly google took care of that. Having had the taste of that I became curious and landed in YDHTVTB in its dying days.

I loved the care and compassion as as well as the friendly andf polite tone of the man. I too was shocked to read all the unnecessary nastygrams he received. Such a polite and generous man. What can someone extract from his efforts' downfall? I guess I will never understand such people and their aims, since it does not fit into the realm of common sense.

I am glad to see the serious efforts indicated by THXjay here. I agree. But as I also expressed myself in the Col.'s shelter, I too was seriously under the impression that this place was also ending, seriously.

Much like THXjay this fascinating world made me think. I said I have a lot of music. I love soundtracks, yet I also like all sorts of other things at the same time. That is why you can never hear the radio on in my car, it's always my own chosen music. So maybe rather than keeping all to myself, I felt I should try to give something back to these truly unselfish folks. Thus I started my blog. If anyone is familiar with it, I try to follow the eclectic pattern, yet soundtracks are always the # 1 child with me too.
Unfortunately since I do not have the good fortune of having a friends team or group of folks doing exactly what I am trying to do, I do whatever I do all on my own. However the recent atmosphere of threats forced me to do something I absolutely did not wantr to do, taht is to lock my doors to everyone else, except tyhe 100 folks who responded to my invitation.

But some good came out in the process, several folks like Stanley1, southview212, ruggo, countistvan, gsw all said that I was welcome to post some of their shares.

More communication, more fun. Since my area is not an xchange (per say) like this, this atmosphere is difficult or impossible to duplicate in my little place.

And one word for the VS folks if they are reading us here. I love what they do, after I startewd involwing in the blogosphere I spent serious amount of dough (to each his own of course) at their and other film music sellers.

Philiosophically speaking I believe their sales and name may actually have expanded more after thisd blogosphere phenomena. For my self it has.

I am happy that THXjay and more of us are willing to stick around.

One little suggestion though. Why not have more of us use PANDO for request fullfillments etc on anything that may disturb the peace here?

Another disclaimer if THXjay thinks is a good idea, would be to post some kind of sign (colored) at the entrance of the filmscoruium which suggests what is not acceptable for share here. Right?

@riddim1903 & all

I must hold up my hands as partly to blame for the recent confusion and panic here at Frankly. Although I knew of isbum's situation, I wasn't aware of the speed at which it would occur (not sure if he did either!). That meant that we didn't have much time to come up with a proper plan for carrying on the site. Obviously, it would have just carried on without human intervention but it needed to be overseen to both keep it up-to-date and to make sure it didn't become a cesspit of spam :)

I originally told izzy that I couldn't commit to overseeing Frankly because I was really busy with The Art Dept, especially since filmpac went walkabout.

Speaking of filmpac. He hasn't been in touch now for several weeks and I fear there may be something more seriously wrong than a busted computer, which was the original problem.

But back to my story...
As izzy's cut-off day came and went, we still hadn't really had a proper chance to talk, then it was all too late.
The absolutely incredible messages of support posted here were a real eye-opener. It's amazing how this site has built up a "family" feel over its lifetime, and it wasn't something I could sit back and leave to fade away.
This is why I decided to step in and do the right thing by isbum. I felt a little guilty for not agreeing to take over straight away but as they say, "better late than never!".

In the couple of days between isbum leaving and me deciding to pull my finger out and take the helm, a high-ranking army type was already constructing a temporary barracks for the Frankly troops to regroup :)

The Col's shelter will be our sanctuary if the worst should ever happen. I must reiterate my previous statements though as there still seems to be some confusion regarding the Frankly future...

franklyYES is NOT going anywhere. The site will be here for as long as you all keep visiting (and I presume that will be for quite some years)

I don't wish to keep banging the same old drum, but Varese have, like I've already said, been very reasonable, and if they wanted to, could have caused some real trouble for us. To their credit, they acted more than fairly, and this is why I feel the least we can do is abide by their wishes and NOT share their catalogue.

I'm also of the opinion that hearing music shared here (and elsewhere) encourages people to buy more. I only bought a Varese CD (yes a real disc) a week or so ago, so downloading hasn't stopped me spending money on CD's. If anything, it's just made me aware of stuff I would never have know about before!

riddim's suggestion of using PANDO to share some of the more "high profile" releases is a good one, and like a few of you, I already use it now and again. It's is obviously up to the individual readers whether or not they go down that route.

And the addition of a "VareseNOT" banner to the Filmscorium sign is taken onboard. I feel it's probably a little too much at the moment but if people keep ignoring the "ban" then we may have to think about it. I'm hoping the message will sink-in eventually. We do have a clear message above the comments box so as you type your comment it should be right in front of you :)

Thanks for listening (well, reading) my ramblings again.

P.S. I'm just off to open the weekend pad ;)

@THXjay,

I do not know about the rest of us, but I think that detailed messages, such as the one you posted here have more of a glue affect than not, for this community. It reiterates a sense of togetherness, duty, commitment and yet none of these are compulsory, rather bourne by the decency and candor of all of the partcicipants. For all of your trouble's sake THXjay, I hope that your moderation merely stays with the tecnical matters and you need not to wrestle with the other negative/annoying stuff. It seems that the other nasty stuff will not rear its ugly face anytime soon :)

Thanks for all your awesome support!

Even if NOTHING is posted anymore, this still would be a great forum to meet film music friends.

I would suggest to only post titles that are out of print. If other labels see that the Varese way is working I suppose sooner or later they will do the same.

I hope isbum will show up again soon, he is such a great guy.

And THXjay, many thanks for your great work here. It would be fantastic if you could further oversee things here.

Also, good health and happiness to sorei. Long time no see/write. To Life !

Hello you-all,

So sorry to read about the recent problems here. I am really not a soundtrack collector, but I do follow the action here because it is such a great community (led by the noble Isbum and now the stalwart THXJay) and because I have something to offer at times.

This is one of those times - an early Henry Mancini score to a 1958 film called Summer Love. Although this is a quasi-rock movie, the score is quite varied and enjoyable. Ripped from the original vinyl at my place:

It's today, but because he's nearing 40, I figure we shouldn't get him too exited all on one day.

He might drop his tea bag into his porridge. ;)

Remember the exploding saloon?
Man! GOOD TIMES!
Best wishes for a wonderful Birthday week!

THXjay said...

@ isbum - You may not feel so happy when you get my bill ;-)

Speaking of the frankly shop signs, I don't think people realise the sheer amount of time that went into them. How many variations must we have gone through before the final designs. And the animated versions were a nightmare (for me) working out all the frames and stuff!

It's always a pleasure to work with you on these projects, as, unlike some people I've come across online, you always take things in the right spirit, and are always the voice of reason. I know we've almost been to the edge of insanity working on some of the signs :)

Although we talk almost every day online, I don't think people here realise that because I'm not usually a big poster here. Partly because I never have much to share, or say, that would interest most folks, but also because I'm usually off tinkering with some blog somewhere (trying not to mess it up).

@ All - Thanks again for all the birthday wishes :)

Not score-related, but more sad news: Frank Frazetta died today.

Isbum said...

@ Jeffrey Scott Arnold -
Actually, quite score-related.
Some of my favorite Lp covers featured Frazetta's art.

His women were delightfully curvy and his men powerfully muscular.

A great loss to the art world.
Makes me think of the Conan painting with him appearing to be weeping.

Saw the sad news about Lena Horne on our local TV station, but not a word about Frank Frazetta. I'll miss both of their stars in the creative cosmos; the world just got a little smaller for their loss. Frazetta's art was, to me, at least, definitive of the SF genre in which he worked so extensively, changing the face of book covers (and albums) forever. Two disparate but defining talents with great bodies of work to appreciate. They will be missed.

I used to visit You Don't Have To Visit This Blog. I had no idea that the guy putting it together did it on a pc in a public library. Although it was basic looking, the time spent on it & the kindness & interest shown by the guy running it always impressed me.

I just hope he wasn't too disheartened by the imbecile who ruined things. Blogs are by their nature ephemeral, but whilst they last they depend on goodwill & trust. Whilst they last, they at least give us an opportunity to prove to one another that people are capable of kindness & sharing, even if some of us have only comments to share, rather than music.

Mood Music & Library Fans!

Here are a couple of library albums I picked up recently and have just ripped for our good friend Mel. I thought that some of the folks here may also like them so here they are:

They are both in the style of the "Golden Age" Hollywood film scores and newsreels of the time. All original recordings from the 40's & 50's, and excellent quality.

DeWolfe DWCD 0126 : Movie Archives Light Activity

and

Atmosphere AACD-5 : The 1940's Archive : Drama, Heritage, Landscape

As is usual with these library releases, they include both the full-length tracks, plus shorter versions which were to be used as commercial bumpers etc.

Enjoy!
