Hello everyone!

Welcome to our new hip neck of the woods!

As you know, Mel and I love everything from the Golden years of Hollywood. We became very close through this common fondness, and Isbum is graciously allowing us to share a little of that love with you.

Here you will find soundtracks from the 40's, 50's and 60's including musicals, scores and more!

Now, we can't do it all ourselves, so don't hold back. If you find a rare soundtrack from those wonderful years, please share it with us! The more the better.

We hope you will have a great time during your visits here, and may this be the beginning of many new friendships!

Sallie

Now, to start things off, Mel has a wonderful grand opening share for you.

On a side note, Mel has spent many, many days deciding on what to post for this grand occasion. Since we are 8 hours apart (trust me, we're used to it), he wanted me to share what he's worked on for so long.

Without further ado, herrrrreeee's Mel!

The movie Guys And Dolls (1955) perhaps appeals to me so much because it encompasses some of my favorite entities: the amusing stories and characters of Damon Runyon; the wonderful music and lyrics of Frank Loesser; the genre of the film musical and some celebrated Broadway performers who recreated their roles in this, the screen version of the show.

Although the original Broadway Cast album with Robert Alda and Vivian Blaine has almost always been available, to my knowledge no legitimate album of the entire repertory of songs from the soundtrack of the movie version of Guys And Dolls was ever issued. When I say legitimate I mean studio produced especially for release to the public on a disc. I have just heard of a reputedly flawed and unauthorized CD released in Spain but I haven't seen it. Soundtrack Collector doesn't list it.

As Sallie has said at The Vintage Place, we don't like making dvd rips for soundtracks, unless absolutely necessary, and when I did this it was absolutely necessary. So I collated all the songs and some of the incidental music to fill this need. There are some instances of sound effects sneaking in through the music but they don't distract much, and due to the rarity of the material I feel that they are worth tolerating. They cannot be much worse than the Spanish CD.

No vocal dubbing was employed in Guys And Dolls – all of the actors used their own voices in the songs – though neither Marlon Brando nor Jean Simmons were singers. They both acquitted themselves remarkably well, however.

Some of the songs from the original Broadway show were lamentably cut from the film (notably Marry The Man Today, A Bushel And A Peck and I've Never Been In Love Before) and there were two new songs especially written by Loesser for the movie (Pet Me, Poppa and A Woman In Love), while another of the original songs, My Time Of Day, was used merely as incidental music.

Despite these shortcomings the movie is immensely enjoyable, as are the extant songs.

1. Main Title and Opening Sequence / Fugue For Tinhorns – Orchestra and Chorus

2. Follow The Fold (1) – Chorus

3. The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game In New York – Frank Sinatra, Stubby

Kaye, Johnny Silver and Chorus

4. I'll Know – Jean Simmons, Marlon Brando

5. Pet Me Poppa – Vivian Blaine and Chorus

6. Adelaide's Lament – Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra

7. Follow The Fold (2) – Chorus

8. Guys And Dolls – Frank Sinatra, Stubby Kaye, Johnny Silver and Chorus

9. Adelaide – Frank Sinatra

10. If I Were A Bell – Jean Simmons

11. A Woman In Love – Jean Simmons, Marlon Brando

12. Take Back Your Mink – Vivian Blaine and Chorus

13. Luck Be A Lady – Dance Sequence – Orchestra under the direction of Jay Blackton

14. Luck Be A Lady – Marlon Brando and Chorus

15. Sue Me - Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra

16. Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat – Stubby Kaye and Chorus

17. Guys And Dolls – Sequence

18. Finale and End Title – Orchestra and Chorus

It does my heart good to see Sallie & Mel back together, under that wonderful facade out front. Long may you reign, and bring us those hits from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I've had something special in mind for quite a while now, and will be most happy to present that over the coming weekend. Think Mickey & Judy, and that's enough of a clue for now.

Outstanding first share Mel, Guys & Dolls is indeed the holy grail of musical soundtracks. I believe I do have that Spanish CD you speak of, but I suspect yours will outshine it. Jolly jolly:))

Wonderful commentary.

sallie...

I feel like the Arbuckle character does in Mack and Mabel when he sees Mabel again after too long an absence ... and he sings "When Mabel Comes In The Room".

Do you know the story about Loesser going into Sinatra's trailer and punching him out in front of Frank's security goons between takes?

Chimez-

No, I'm not familiar with the Blue Eyes knock-out, and I've read several biographies and films- what happened?

@ All-

Before I just start posting things, does anyone have a request? A lot of my shares I have posted here or on my blog, but it's been quite a while ago. I have a lot available, though.

Let me know if there's something in particular that you want.

Hiya all, very nice room you have here! :)

Would this be the spot to ask for Miklos Rozsa's music from THE KILLERS with Burt Lancaster? I'm specifically looking for the burned-from-the-Criterion-effects/score-track version, as the previously released ones have poor mastering.

I just found some music from THE THIRD MAN, if anyone's interested.

If so, thanks! :)

Hello, gentle folk – a hearty welcome to you all.

I would like first of all to thank Isbum very sincerely for inviting Sallie and me to have the honor of taking care of this, the newest shop at Downtown.

Huge thanks are also due to THXjay for all the time and care he took to make the shop sign so fabulous.

To my dear friend Sallie: Thank you for joining me in this project. Thank you also for your constantly unwavering support and encouragement for all the projects we have done together and for your wonderful friendship. You are the best; they just don’t come any better than you.

To our dear friends Chimezatmidnight, Rocket, Parzival, Filmpac Ennioman, mcc – thank you all for your lovely words of welcome to us. Most of you guys have been part of our little community since our days at YDHTV (hi, nomwl1!) and it’s fantastic that we have stuck together under Isbum’s ever-growing umbrella ever since.

We hope you will continue to drop by regularly and enjoy what we post here, post comments and also that you send requests (we also invite you to feel free to make your own contributions here).

Thanks again, and my warmest wishes to all of you.

stubbins said...

sallie,

Sinatra felt hurt and angry over his not being cast as Sky Masterson. On the set he started out with passive aggression and then became opening derisive of Mankiewicz and, particularly, of Frank Loesser.

There was a good reason why Loesser was cast as a mobbed up tough guy in the forties and Sinatra wasn't: he was a tough guy who came from a cultured Jewish family in Harlem and who said he learned counterpoint from riding the El train.

Loesser had had it. He stormed into Sinatra's trailer and confronted him. In the trailer were Sinatra's "pal", his security goons. Loesser did not care. This was HIS project, he had won a Pulitzer for his share of it and he never wanted Sinatra as either Masterson or Detroit.

Sinatra threatened him, got up to swing -- and Loesser proceeded to quickly beat the crap out of him.

Afterward Sinatra's behavior fit perfectly the old AD's call -- he was "quiet on the set".

And in the future? If Sinatra saw Loesser at a party, he'd shrink and find a way to leave.

I think one of his last movies was in a completely different genre - that of science fiction (another of my loves of this period) in Day Of The Triffids, in which he acquitted himself well without being required to sing.

Thanks so much for sharing Kismet with us. Please drop by again soon!

Mel and Sallie,

I only have a limited number of Musicals (on CD, that is; my hard disk had none until a week or two ago). My mistake thinking I might had something to offer here :-(

Surely you'll have no interest in these two OSTs. On the other hand if any visitor – just as needy as me – with a poor collection in the genre wants them...
· The Boy Friend (1971) & highlights from Goodbye, Mr Chips
· Gypsy (1993)

Let us hope you may like to pick up one or two items from the list I posted earlier today at the Broadway Bound.

Last but not least, "Thanks for your enthusiasm in creating this page."

@ filmpac

Never having lived anywhere near either the USA or the UK, normally my introductions to Broadway musicals were by seeing the movie versions and Gypsy is a case in point. I loved this movie (still do of course) and when it was first released I used to go back to the cinema and watch it again and again (this was long before the advent of the video cassette). Now I can watch the disc any time…

I'm very glad to get a copy of the soundtrack.

Thanks so much.

I'm sure I'll be coming up with many more requests, but for now, how about the OST of A Little Night Music?

I feel bad, I've been absent from my own home.

I'm ready for summer break, so that I can have some time off of work and hang out here! I'm hoping to pop in more now that our school fundraiser is over, and we are nearing the end of testing for my students.

As I'm sure all of you know, I've yet to post anything! I know, it's very sad.

My first share is something of a compilation, part of the Rh*n* anthology series. This is not a common release- I just happened to stumble upon it.

It's called "Alive & Kickin': Big Bad Sounds at M-G-M. This features some of the great songs from films like Bathing Beauty, I Dood It, Thrill of a Romance, Ship Ahoy and more.

My favorite track has to be One o'clock jump featured in the opening minutes of I Dood It. The first time I heard this song I was mesmerized, with the rapid trumpet scales- it's simply amazing.

Anyway, enough of my commentary, here for you is Alive & Kickin: Big Band Sounds at M-G-M.

@ sallie & mel
Don't worry my dear friends if you find a limited audience to start with.
I have the same feeling in my shop. As a matter of fact my last two links didn't find anyone to download the corresponding files with an ugly 0 download.
But I'm not desperate. I can't believe that I am the only one in the world liking Ray Anthony playing "Tenderly", "Stardust", "Harlem Nocturne" or "How High The Moon".
Let's say that both of you and me are prioritizing quality as opposed to quantity (although it would be much nicer if quantity would start with 1 instead of 0).
But again no reason to worry, we'll find our audience at a later stage.
At least you know that I fully share with you the kind of music offered in your shop.
In this respect I still have some valid links corresponding to albums I shared a while ago at YDHTVTB (hi nomwl1, you're greatly missed), which, in my opinion, fit perfectly the style of music you are offering here.
They are from 2 LP sets released in the 70s by MGM under the title "Those Glorious MGM Musicals".
Each 2 LP set was containing original soundtrack recordings from 2 or 3 great MGM musicals and I am glad to share them again here.

1-Lovely To Look At / Brigadoon
http://rapidshare.com/users/XIGBJW

2-Seven Brides For Seven Brothers / Rose-Marie
http://rapidshare.com/users/SMTK5A

3-The Pirate / Pagan Love Song / Hit The Deck http://rapidshare.com/users/CN6C1K

4-Silk Stockings / Les Girls
http://rapidshare.com/files/16089815/Silk_Stockings_Les_Girls_mp3.rar

Concerning this last link something unusual happened to me. I bought the records, as well as the other ones during business trips I was regularly making in Detroit, Michigan.
The 2 records I'm speaking of were supposed to contain soundtracks from "Silk Stockings", "The Barkleys Of Broadway" and "Les Girls".
Record 1 was having half of "Silk Stockings" on side one and "Les Girls" on the other side which was side four.
Record 2 was having the other half of "Silk Stockings" on one side (side two) and "The Barkleys Of Broadway" on the other side (side three).
Back home, when I unpacked the record which was factory sealed, I had the unpleasant surprise to find the original soundtrack of "2001 - A Space Odyssey" on record 2 and therefore I am missing the music which was supposed to be on the original record 2.
That's why in the above link, there is only half of "Silk Stockings" and "Les Girls".
"The Barkleys Of Broadway" and the other half of "Silk Stockings" are still badly missed.
By the way, and this is a request, if someone has what is missed as described here, it would tremendously appreciated to be able to complete this album.
Anyway, to all the golden age of Hollywood lovers,
Enjoy

Hiya Hank, on behalf of Sallie and myself, thank you very much for your kind words of encouragement. I agree with isbum and I am certain that when people get used to the new format, they will visit and participate more often.

I am as big a fan of Ray Anthony as you are and I have been since the early 1950s (that goes for Billy May as well). The reason why I didn't download any of your posts is that I have almost all of them already, except for Houseparty Hop and Plays Steve Allen which I do intend to download. Can we be the only two fans left? He was tremendously popular in the 50s.

Thank you for reuploading your set of "Those Glorious MGM Musicals", which, as you say, fit perfectly the style of music we are offering here.

I'm happy to be able to share with you the expanded soundtrack of Silk Stockings, with thanks to the original uploader:

@ filmpac,

Of course I thank you for the Russell's OST. Did you say something about Ethel Merman's OBC? Sure... Sallie and Mel must also have it, any chance one of you three may eventually post it here — or is there still a valid link at "the other place"? I also appreciate and will dld all your Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland stuff. Love the idea.

Because I didn't include any art for the others I posted I've included scans for all of them in this file (along with links for anyone who missed them)

It contains mood music for various genres, it's different to the others but worth a listen.

Many thanks for posting the last two Garland and Rooney soundtracks and I am heartened to know that they’re being downloaded.

Night And Day? I have never seen a release of songs from this one, although Soundtrack Collector lists a 4-CD compilation set which includes two of the songs – My Heart Belongs To Daddy by Mary Martin and You’re The Top by Cary Grant and Ginny Simms. I couldn’t locate either of them in my own collection, however. If only I had a copy of the movie on DVD I would attempt a rip….

@ mindy

Thank you for the heads up for the Danny Kaye stories.

Did you know that Jolson made two versions of Hallelujah? As the word "bum" was in those days extremely vulgar for "backside" in Britain, Larry Hart had to rewrite the lyics for an alternate version which was titled "Hallelujah I'm A Tramp"! And that's the only version that I have seen.

@ thxjay - I would have literally triple-missed your "Music For The Movies"! First, because it's been a few weeks since my last visit at the newly revamped FilmScorium. Then, because till now I had never ever listened to a "Library" record — to be honest, in my ignorance I didn't expect anything substantial. And last but not least, this one is full of very well crafted and performed cues. THANK YOU for this eye & ear-opener! Do other library stuff are of comparable quality?

@ isbum - Thank you so much! All of your latest uploads are the kind of music I am hoping to find here, time and again. Additional thanks for the high bitrate and especially for putting names to the tracks. (I can not only try to encourage, but I'm also very willing to praise — as you deserve it.)
By the way: Your serial-uploads, having your avatar figuring at the side, could look like a film-strip... had you typed only a line or two, and if I were not to spoil a (possibly longer) uninterrupted sequence! :-)

Sallie and I have quite large (and probably almost identical collections of Golden Age musical soundtracks. The problem is that many of them have already been posted in the past and we’re a bit stumped about which to post here.

So it’s funny that you’ve come up with some extraordinary soundtracks here in the last couple of days and now you have posted even more – two discs of the Busby Berkeley musicals. The mayor is doing better than his shopkeepers!

Very many thanks.

@ all

Please continue sending requests which we will do our best to fulfill. Remember that, in addition to soundtracks of musicals, we also need requests for general film scores of Hollywood's Golden Age era – which would include the 1930s up to the 1960s.

We would like to try to bring you the soundtracks that you would like. So don’t be shy and don’t *blush* - send your requests already!

Isbum said...

@ Mel - Always my pleasure to be a part of this community.
My philosophy is "share what you like and like minded people will find you."

The shops can be treated as a library of your favorite records. If folks request items that you have posted, they are here or can be found easily in Quinlan's Excel files.

I have a stack of papers with links to music I have shared previously.
It's so handy to have when a request comes along and I don't have to spend a lot of effort to find it.

Brick by brick, this little shop is coming along very nicely Mel.

Sallie mentioned it being Frank Sinatra month, and I know most of his have been shared before. But I'm going to take a punt on this collection, it's not the best bitrate at a lowish VBR, but considering its vintage it sounds mighty fine to these ears.

The first installment of six discs...

Frank Sinatra "Sinatra In Hollywood: 1940-1964", @VBR:
http://rapidshare.com/files/114767881/FS-Hollywood_Disc1.zip
http://rapidshare.com/files/114768200/FS-Hollywood_Disc2.zip

Isbum said...

But it ain't over yet! :)

mel said...

To everyone who doesn't have the set of "Sinatra In Hollywood 1940-1964" which filmpac is so graciously sharing with us here, I would say that it's indispensible to all Sinatra fans (and I am confident that that includes all of us) so grab it! Please note: these are not the studio recordings which everyone is so familiar with, but songs recorded directly from the films. And it's complete - it includes all the songs from all the Sinatra movies between 1940 and 1964!

Another case (jewel case?) of the best things in life being free.

Filmpac, thank you, my good friend!

di(aphanous said...

Mel and Sallie, isbum and filmpac,

Please, do accept my words of appreciation ALSO on their behalf.
__

@ filmpac, there's been a 2-second glitch on track #108 of “Sinatra In Hollywood - Disc 1”, from 0:40 to 0:42. I could not make a better repair but – if you've got no opportunity to rip and up it again – this result may just pass:

repaired - 108 - finale- the last call for love.mp3

PS. I haven't listened to the rest, yet.

Second installment in the Sinatra in Hollywood series...

Frank Sinatra "Sinatra In Hollywood: 1940-1964", @VBR:
http://rapidshare.com/files/114893198/FS-Hollywood_Disc3.zip
http://rapidshare.com/files/114899701/FS-Hollywood_Disc4.zip

@ mel - Thanks for that bit of a push. Yes, I should have mentioned that these recordings are straight from the movies themselves, making them an invaluable addition for us film buffs.

@ di(aphanous - Not glad there was a glitch, but glad you have corrected it for us. Thank you for taking the time to do so. Sadly these are not my rips, otherwise the bitrate would be better, but I do feel that the sound quality is very good considering the vintage. A little more on that below.

@ all - For the benefit of new visitors, these are recorded in what is known as VBR, or Variable Bit Rate. This means that on playback, the quality is automatically adjusted as the music requires, the end result being a higher bitrate in passages that need it. Do not be fooled if your media player reports the bitrate @128. The constant fluctuations will provide a much better listening experience than one strictly @128 bitrate.

filmpac said...

It seems a shame to waste this link, an online pal hooked me up with it and he has kindly given me permission to share it with you. The Rh|no release, 27-tracks of Cole Porter's musical, complete with full artwork...

Soundtrack "Kiss Me Kate" (1953), @320:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CBKRPXJ1

This was our first experiment with files that are in a format known as Wavpack (WV), which is a lossless format that basically creates a single track mirror image of the original CD. The files here have been converted to mp3 format @320, the highest available, and sound great!

One small word of warning, this was my mate's first attempt, all 27 tracks are here as separate tracks, but they are just named as Track 01, 02 etc. That's the bad news, but there is good news too. The files are all tagged correctly inside, so if you have a good tag editor it is a snap to rename them to something more meaningful.

Enjoy!

Since I was about 5 years old I have been fascinated by the music of George Gershwin. More so than any of his famous contemporaries Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Cole Porter, Gershwin involved himself not only with writing the music for popular songs and Broadway shows but also with concert works such as the well-known Rhapsody In Blue, An American In Paris, Piano Concerto In F as well as various other less distinguished pieces. His successful folk opera, Porgy And Bess, was many years previously preceded by a one-act jazz opera titled Blue Monday which was a promising first step in the right direction but a dismal failure at the box office, having been presented once only on Broadway as part of George White’s Scandals Of 1922 and then dropped. The movie biography Rhapsody In Blue (1945) contained a shortened version of it.

The CD that I am posting here is in three basic sections: a performance of the complete Blue Monday; transcriptions of seven piano recordings that Gershwin himself recorded while in England in 1926 and 1928 and played by Francois-Joel Thollier, and (this is my excuse for posting it here) seven excerpts from the original soundtrack of a movie for which Gershwin wrote the music – Delicious (1931). I have to admit that I have never had the opportunity of seeing it – it’s extremely rare. The songs “Blah, Blah, Blah and the title song are the only pieces of music written for this film that are remembered today.

Some slices of musical history here, but they may not appeal to everyone.

@ isbum - Outstanding posts there bud, after all these years I never expected to see anything released from some of those golden oldies. Thank you soooo much for sharing, my musicals folder overfloweth!

Hi, Folks

Please, excuse me for my virtual incursion and if it's not the proper place to share as well as request links to scores albuns.

I'm a quinlan's brazilian friend who have recommended this Franklynot isbum's blog.

However, here is my little Burt Bacharach's soundtracks wish list.
I'd really love if anybody could host as well as link me to download any of them.

1979 - Together? (soundtrack - (LP RCA);
2000 - Broadway First Take Vol. 2 (Promises, Promises (1969), demo songs - released in CD Slider Stage SMS 703).

(Please, if possible, mail to pcastep-all(at)yahoo.com.br if you have any of those two Bacharach's soundtracks.)

Thank you everybody in advance. Best greetings and congratulations for this great Blog.

Review
This Burt Bacharach/Paul Anka collaboration is another case of a fine soundtrack album that went nowhere because the movie stiffed. Side A (this album
unfortunately is not available on compact disc) opens with Jackie DeShannon singing the heartbreaking "I Don't Need You Anymore," while side B opens with a
gorgeous ballad -- "I've Got My Mind Made Up" -- soulfully sung by Michael McDonald. Every other song on the album is a winner, including "In Tune," sung by
Libby Titus. This is a really good album -- almost every track catches Bacharach's magic. To top it off, there's a nice picture of Jacqueline Bisset on the
cover. ~ Tim Griggs, All Music Guide

Review:
"This is the second volume in the fascinating Broadway First Take series of CD releases on the Slider Music /Stage label.
The series features the newly-discovered, VERY FIRST studio recordings of the now-classic songs from the legendary shows of American Musical Theater.
On this album, for the only time in the history of these legendary songs, we hear them with a purity never achieved again -- just as the writers wrote them. The composers/lyricists of the shows were in the studio at these recording sessions, guiding and supervising. Burt bacharach was there for Promises, Promises, Rodgers and Hammerstien for Flower Drum Song, and Jerry Herman for La Cage Aux Folles.

All the recordings derive from the original studio demo masters of these shows. It is this very aspect of the project which makes it unusual, and of interest.
These recordings, mostly dating from the 1960's through the 1980's, were made before the shows ever became shows. The demos were produced to convince popular
singers of the day to record selections from the scores -- before the shows opened -- so that at the time of the show's premiere, the music would already be
popular. During this golden age, when covers of Broadway songs were a staple of the pop world, leading theatre writers and their music publishers saw the
value of making these demo recordings. As the recordings on this volume indicate, care and money were lavished to create polished masters, even though they
were destined to be heard by only a handful. The results are no mere intellectual curiosities, but a listening experience of tremendous charm -- capturing
the freshness of these brand new creations -- as well as fascinating musical details".

Isbum said...

@ Sallie - I have an on-off button on the back of my modem that I shut off for a minuet & when it comes back up Rapidshare doesn't make me wait.

You should see about doing that. I was hesitant too because I was aftaid of messing up my IP address or that the computer would blow up. ;)
But it works like a charm!

Glad you want them Sallie. I honestly thought you had them already. :)

Sallie Neal said...

@ Isbum-

I'm not sure that would work in my case, as my phone and everything is hooked into this one modem- and there's no switch or button. It's a new model, I just had it installed- so I'm not familiar with it yet. I'll see if I can figure something out.

Thanks again for your shares!

This is not my rip – I found this collection on a blog that seems to concentrate on new age , music of the Middle East and other exotic stuff but not soundtracks. Until I saw this I had never come across it anywhere. I thought it would get lost in that blog, and it’s too valuable not to be getting more exposure. It’s something that I had in the back of my mind to do myself but never quite got round to working on it. I know it’s the type of thing nomwl1 probably would like to have and I hope he sees it here. Kudos to the original uploader for compiling it: the Motion Picture Academy Award-winning songs from the beginning, 1934, up to 1951. I know, some vocalists have recorded with their own versions of all these songs – the best of whom, in my opinion, was Eddie Fisher in the mid 1950s. But almost all the tracks in this collection were taken from the original soundtracks by the original artists.

Track List:

1.. Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers – The Continental
2.. Dick Powell – Lullaby of Broadway
3.. Fred Astaire – The Way You Look Tonight
4.. Bing Crosby – Sweet Leilani
5.. Bob Hope/Shirley Ross – Thanks For The Memory
6.. Judy Garland – Over The Rainbow
7.. Cliff Edwards – When You Wish Upon A Star
8.. Ann Southern – The Last Time I Saw Paris
9.. Bing Crosby/Martha Mears – White Christmas
10... Alice Faye – You’ll Never Know
11.. Bing Crosby – Swinging On A Star
12. Louanne Hogan – It Might As Well Be Spring
13. Judy Garland – On the Atchison, Topeka & The Santa Fe
14. James Baskett – Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah
15. Bob Hope – Buttons And Bows
16. Esther Williams/Ricardo Montalban – Baby, It’s Cold Outside
17. Nat ‘King’ Cole – Mona Lisa
18. Bing Crosby/Jane Wyman – In The Cool, Cool Cool Of The Evening

I thank the original uploader for his splendid effort and hope that he will continue working through the years following 1951.

Enjoy.

Hello to Sallie and Mel and all others hereabouts. The commingled talents of Danny Kaye and Gilbert & Sullivan are now on aural display over at the Big 10-Inch Record.

"Gilbert & Sullivan and Danny Kaye" is one of the more unusual Kaye items, apparently unreissued since the late 1940s.

Mel - hope this is new to you!

Await @ Broadway Bound.

BTW: The “Academy Award-winning songs” that you've posted is not someone's private enterprise but a two-disc commercial set, running up to 1993 — I think. I had them (have them?) both in my now dead old PC; possibly they're still simply in a comatose state, engraved on obscure clusters of the said HDD. So, Thank you for spotting this Part One.
___

@ Buster - Got down "G&S and Danny" from your blog now. Pretty nice place, pretty nice info. Thanks for all three of them — link incl. :-)

I'm curious as to whether Mr K. sings with an English accent...

mel said...

@ di(aphanous

Thanks for the info regarding the "Academy Award-Winning Songs" - it seems that someone has passed it off as his own compilation. As I would really like to acquire the others (at least until the end of the 1970s; I lost interest after those) I hope that you will eventually be able to resurrect the HDD in your old PC.

Thanks for the Tammy Grimes Molly Brown - and I'm also looking for the soundtrack version with Debbie Reynolds and Harve Presnell.

mel said...

@ di(aphanous

Danny Kaye had the uncanny ability not only to sing with a British accent but also to speak with, not just one, but a number of different British accents, as evidenced in a few of his movies. An enormously talented mimic, he could imitate just about any accent of any foreign language that he heard.

Hi guys, great blogs by the way. You guys have great taste in music and a wide variety of music on each of them. It's fun just to browse and see what everyone is into. My holy grail happens to be the soundtrack to the 1954 movie CARMEN JONES which starred Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte but dubbed by the (then unknown) Marilyn Horne and LaVern Hutchinson. It was released by RCA that same year. Would love to score a copy of that. Keep up the great work guys.

Mel,

I am interested in dubbing artists as well. I will be posting the vocals that India Adams dubbed for Joan Crawford in that "classic" movie Torch Song in a little while - along with the rest of the Torch Song album.

Thanks so much for directing me to "The Boy Friend" download. So my next question is where do I find the postings prior to April 17?

I'm also happier than a pig in, uh, mud about the Reprise offerings, and the "Gypsy" soundtrack.

But further to the 'dubbing' conversation, Rose's tracks are labeled 'Rosalind Russell.' The intros are Roz, but the singing is Lisa Kirk.

When you arrive at the front page of Franklynot, look at the top right-hand side of the screen.
Directly under “The Next Project” you will see a box called Quinlan’s Monthly Excel Archive Spreadsheet. Go in there and you will see a link to download the spreadsheet which will give you the links to all posts since the inception of this blog. Not all the links may still work, however – my good friend quinlan cannot possibly check this; you just have to trust your luck that what you are looking for is still available. If it isn’t, you can request it at one of the shops here and someone is bound to upload it for you!

Yes, some of Roz’s songs in Gypsy were indeed dubbed by Liza Kirk – I read that in certain songs she dubbed only the high notes – but I guess we’ll never know exactly as she was not credited at the time of release of the movie. Liza Kirk for sure did not sing everything.

I am looking for Roz Russell’s version of Wonderful Town, a television production, in which she undoubtedly did her own singing.

Except for The Student Prince, The Jolson Story and Jolson Sings Again, the Hollywood studios tried to hide the practice of dubbing from the public.

Many thanks for your input. We look forward you seeing you again here soon!

PS. I'm curious as to when you guys and gals consider the curtain came down on the golden age of musicals. Man Of La Mancha would seem to me as being quite possibly the last of the old style filmed musicals.

PPS. Thought Peter O'Toole would have made a fine replacement for Richard Harris as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films.

Hi,

Very great musical scores at all, I’m tired trying to find “ Goodbye Mr. Chips “the John Williams one. I think it’s the one and only musical he make? It seems be disappeared from the world, No DVD, No CD, Even no Poster anymore. My last hope are to let my request just here and maybe a miracle. Just as in Finian Rainbow, Petula Clark where great, and wonderful.

@ Sallie, yes it was à great moment to read all the comment, about thoses magnificent Musicals scores. Please Accept my apologies for my poor english, read are O.K But writing that's another question.:-)

My friend J.C.Loophole, of the Random Shelf, who lectures on the subject, defines classic films as pre-1967 and modern classics as 1967-1999. Everything else falls under the heading of "recent."

I go along with that.

Hi all,

The Big 10-Inch Record now has music from the Joan Crawford "gem" Torch Song. It includes Crawford's songs as done by dubbing artist India Adams and piano music by Walter Gross, the composer of Tenderly. Gross dubbed the piano playing for Michael Wilding, who played a blind pianist whose love redeemed Crawford's heartless diva.

Yes, that really was the plot.

I believe this has been unreissued since the early 1950s.

A shop link list is now available in the space where the usual Original Incredible Filmscorium monthly list is hosted.
The new list is up to date as of June 11, 2008 approximately middle of the day, depending where you're residing.
As you will see each shop has its own sheet build up the same way as the monthly list.
For some shops, such as "Golden Age Of Hollywood" or "Classical Music Hall", instead of one column for the artist, I have included one column for the composer(s) and another one for the performer(s) when one or the other information was available. This is increasing the research possibilities.
Otherwise, please refer to the main sheet explanation; it works the same way.
From now on the shop link list will be regularly updated and published on a monthly basis at the same time as the usual Filmscorium list. So you will be able to download both lists from the same space (click on "Quinlan's Monthly Excel Archive Spreadsheet".
If you discover an error or something wrong in the new list, please don't hesitate to comment.
All suggestions are welcome.
Thank you very much for your attention.

Thank you for introducing me to the music of Edgar (Vladimir) Cosma - I finally got a chance to download and listen to it. Nice stuff.

You have the uncanny ability to know what I would like!

@ mel - thanks for the Brigadoon offer. I already have it. I was actually doing the search to test out a new music search engine. It's always best to use unusual titles - Cabaret & Grease are bad choices.

Also, I hope you'll still allow Jean's requests for "Goodbye Mr. Chips" and "Finian's Rainbow" even though they are technically past the "classic" date. I'd really like the Mr. Chips myself.

@ jean - here's a link to the Finian's Rainbow OST from that other popular site that shall not be named to avoid controversy:

http://rapidshare.com/files/121882393/Finian_s_Rainbow__Movie_Soundtrack__1968.zip

@ all - is there any interest in a 5-disc box of Academy Award Winning Songs 1934-1993? I think this is slightly different from the 2-disc set mentioned previously. If so, what bit-rate would satisfy people?

Also, I'll add to my list of requests:

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes OST
Variety Girl
It Happened in Brooklyn
Thousands Cheer
Two Girls and a Sailor
Till the Clouds Roll By
Words and Music
Three Little Words
You Can't Have Everything
Go Into Your Dance
You'll Never Get Rich
Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick
Duchess of Idaho
42nd Street
Wonder Bar
Dames
Footlight Parade

Not trying to be greedy here. Just throwing out a bunch of titles to get some activity going.

mel said...

@ mindy

Our boss isbum is very flexible and so are we, particularly in the matter of dates.

I am most interested in the box of Academy Award Winning songs. Any bit rate would satisfy me - at my age I'm not fussy.

I am sure we can help with some of your requests. Please give us a few days to work on them.

Jean said...

@ Mindy Thank you very much for the link i'm loving Petula Ckark, and of course Fred Astaire. Thans again.

@ mindy

I cannot post the expanded soundtrack of Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969) in public here as it is still in print. I will therefore upload it and send you the links by email in the next day or two. Grateful thanks to the uploader, one of our own community - a very sweet guy. Jean’s request for it has been taken care of by him.

You’ll Never Get Rich was very kindly posted right here by isbum on May 11:
http://rapidshare.com/files/114278329/CP_You_llNeverGetRich.zip

He also contributed a set of Busby Berkeley movie soundtracks which include
"42nd Street"
"Gold Diggers of 1933"
"Footlight Parade"
"Wonder Bar" 1934
"Fashions of 1934"
"Dames"
"Gold Diggers of 1935"
"In Caliente"
"Gold Diggers of 1937"
"Hollywood Hotel"

Thanks again, isbum!

And here, thanks to the original uploaders, are:

Words And Music - 8 tracks only - I think this must be from the original LP issued in the 1950s:
http://rapidshare.com/files/123022923/WAM.rar.html

Till The Clouds Roll By
http://rapidshare.com/files/123034604/TCRB.rar.html

Three Little Words
http://rapidshare.com/files/123049615/TLW.rar.html

I am sorry but I don’t have artwork for any of these.

As for the rest, we may be able to find Gentlemen Prefer Blondes OST for you but I’m not sure which, if any of the others were actually issued on record - I will have to do some research on that.

Meanwhile, enjoy and be well!

Mel sent me your list of requests, and one I noticed was "It Happened In Brooklyn". Even though there has not been an official release for this film, there are some songs available from it....

There is a collection called Frank Sinatra in Hollywood that features all of the songs that he sang in his movies, and on the set is 12 songs from the movie It Happened In Brooklyn. You can download them here:

@sallie/mel

Looking for some help.

Have replaced hard drive and lost a lot of links. Got all of yours back, but still missing a lot.

Am looking for one in particular, and I think you may also be a charter member as it's filled with your postings.

I think the word "Compositores" is part of the title. It's a private blog. Mostly soundtracks. Composers' section is broken down alphabetically, other sections include genre's etc.

Can you help and provide link?

Thanks anyway. Hope you enjoy your summer break.

filmpac said...

@ ruggo - I believe you are speaking of "La Leyenda De Los Compisitores". There were at one time both a blog and a forum. Both have recently gone through something of an upheaval, and been re-incarnated.

La Leyenda the forum is now called "La Bande De Max Rebo", and can be found here:
http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=112063

La Leyenda the blog is now defunct, and been replaced with another. It's private. About the only way I can think of asking for membership is by trying to contact the host of the blog (Josereal) at riddim's blog, here:
http://moonsmood.blogspot.com/

Good luck with that mate.

filmpac said...

Compositores, not Compisitores.

@ mel, sallie & buster -- thanks so much for all your generousity. I'm overwhelmed by all this wonderful music!

I hope to be reciprocating very soon with that 5 disc Oscar set and maybe some other things.

@ mel - not sure exactly which music search engine I was checking when I stumbled across the Chet Baker. There were several new ones I tested around that time. None very satisfactory. i think it was:
www.exploseek.com/
one that can be good if you are willing to wade through the results is: www.ickstuff.com
and I know a lot of people slam shareminer, but I've used it with some good results.

If anyone has a great search engine they'd like to share, I'd be thrilled to know.

Hi, everybody. I've been lurking for a while here and I think it is now time to share.

Here's cool collection of themes and incidentals from the Republic Pictures serial days. Dick Tracy, Zorro, King of the Royal Mounted, Captain Marvel, Red Ryder and several other great serials are represented here.

http://rapidshare.com/files/124048437/Cliffhangers.part1.rar

http://rapidshare.com/files/124048662/Cliffhangers.part2.rar

Hi everyone. I've been snagging things for a couple days, so I figured I should contribute something myself.

Starring Fred Astaire (1998 Columbia): This 36-track album traces Fred Astaire's recordings from June 1935 to September 1940.

http://rapidshare.com/files/124416033/Starring_Fred_Astaire.rar

And I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but I just hate to see it go to waste.

The Chronological Bing Crosby

You can read about it here: http://community.mcckc.edu/CROSBY/jonzo.htm

But it's basically everything ever recorded by Bing, including some outtakes, alternate takes, and rejects. Check the link for exactly which songs are on which album, it comes in kinda handy since he recorded some songs multiple times.

Are you aware that the series is being continued by Sep!@, who have released the first and, by now possibly even the second issue of Bing Crosby Through the Years, covering 1950 and 1951?

Anonymous said...

Mel, thanks for the welcome. And I am aware about the new source, though I haven't had a chance to buy the latest CD.

I will point out that though almost all the songs from his movies are included, they are the studio recordings, not cuts from the film.
