Greetings fellow Scientists and Visitors from Other Planets!
The Captain of this ship, Cloud9, is a new graduate of the Franklynot Academy. He'll be taking requests and trying to freak you out with his amazing collection of soundtracks.

Oh... :o

I see the Captain has turned off the "No Sharing" sign, so, please feel free to stretch your links out and roam about the cabin.

One minor note from me. It's fine if some horror scores get posted here too. Just have fun &
EnJoY!

Welcome aboard Cloud9!

I know I've shared this before but it's a wonderful score to a wonderful film and maybe some new readers missed the earlier post.

The wondefully atmospheric score to one of my favourite films, the New Zealand sci-fi classic "The Quiet Earth" from 1985.
The film was directed by Geoff Murphy and starred Bruno Lawrence as the "last man on Earth", based on the novel by Craig Harrison.

I have designed a "complete" set of custom cover artwork for this. I've used the original poster art throughout to preserve the "feel" of the movie.
In 2006 Anchor Bay released a wonderful widescreen special edition DVD which came housed in a "steelpack" case and included an audio commentary by writer/producer Sam Pillsbury...grab it if you can (or just wait for the Blu-Ray)

Hello my dear friends! I am cap. Cloud9 "Winged", also doc. of this famous ship. Before we're leave to our journey, I want to tell something about myself.

I come here from Russian Federation, and at my home, as you probably heard, we're not supposed any compromises. Therefore, I hope to create here one of the fullest collections of soundtracks to Sci-Fi movies and serials on the Internet. Also I hope for your help in this hard business.

Also I'm the Oldest Babylon-5 fan in Saint-Peterburg and because of it, you'll see the complete collection of Babylon-5 OSTs (under my Special Black Cover) over the web very soon.

I'll start to share tomorrow. Our travel begins!

For my first share at this swank new planetarium, I wish to present the film that put the "science" into science-fiction. Alex North composed the score for 2001, with six days of recording taking place during January 1968. Ultimately Stanley Kubrik elected to go with the classical pieces that were used as a temp score during filming. This is North's original "rejected" score, download includes complete booklet...

Alex North "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), rejected @320:
http://rapidshare.com/files/160738235/AN-2001_Original.zip

PS. Not to be confused with the Goldsmith reconstruction, this is the original scoring sessions.

Covers are available for Isbum's share of "Silent Running" from the Artwork Department, great album, thanks Isbum!

I wonder if anyone has a line on the score to the low-budget independent film PRIMER by Shane Carruth.

Brilliant film, great minimalist score -- and composed by the film's director! :)

@ kidflash - We don't mention labels here if we can avoid it. You're right to do it in this case, "Logan's Run" has been played straight for B@y Cities and paired with "Coma" on Ch@pter III.

REQUEST: I have been checking the new/used bins at Amoeba for this Cd issue of Don Ellis' interpretations of "Star Wars" (1977) for six months now.

Star Maidens, TV series 1976. Soundtrack by Berry Lipman @ 128 kbps only though, CD of 1999.

Movie grooves has the following info to offer: "Star Maidens features the music that accompanied the cult German-English Sci-Fi TV Shows from 1975. Medusa is a planet dominated by women where men are second class citizens and kept by the women as slaves. Two men escape to Earth and two sexy Medusians are despatched to fetch them back...all to the accompaniment of this great soundtrack from Berry Lipman. The music used is a fantastic mix of disco, funk, lounge and groovy rock with some great electronica mixed in there too."

I haven't seen the series (yet) but grabbed the soundtrack the other day and found it campy and fun.
Some tidbits of German dialogue are to be found on the tracks.

Star Maidens @ 128

Not my rip, thanks to the original uploader.

scifisoundtrack said...

@Lane

Star Maidens is avalable on DVD, see ebay. This german-english scifi show was developed before Space: 1999. The production design is very similar to Space: 1999 (underground spaceship launch platforms), done by the same design team.

Berry Lipman ist the "english name" of the german composer Friedel Berlipp, who is a successful composer, music producer and band leader.

From The New York Times:

Irving Gertz, Composer for Monsters of the Movies, Dies at 93
By Margalit Fox
Published: November 20, 2008

Irving Gertz, a prolific though often uncredited B-movie composer whose melodies haunt a spate of pictures with words like “Hell,” “Thing” and “Creature” in the titles, died on Nov. 14 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 93.

His death was announced by David Schecter, a producer at Monstrous Movie Music, an independent record label specializing in science-fiction, fantasy and horror film music.

Active from the late 1940s to the late 1960s, Mr. Gertz composed or contributed to the scores of more than 200 films. He was most closely associated with three Hollywood studios: Columbia, Universal and 20th Century Fox.

Among the movies on which Mr. Gertz worked are many that if not precisely classics are enduring representatives of their genre: “The Incredible Shrinking Man,” “It Came From Outer Space,” “The Creature Walks Among Us,” “The Monolith Monsters” and “Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.”

His other film credits, taken together, read like found poetry. There were “The Deadly Mantis,” “Curse of the Undead” and “The Thing That Couldn’t Die.” There were “The Alligator People,” “The Leech Woman” and “Cult of the Cobra.” There were “Destination Murder,” “Experiment Alcatraz” and “Target Hong Kong.” There were “Shark River” and “Massacre Canyon.”

Mr. Gertz contributed music to many television shows, including “Land of the Giants” and “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.” He also composed concert music.

Irving Gertz was born on May 19, 1915, in Providence, R.I. Musical as a youth — he played the piano, clarinet, tuba and string bass — he attended the Providence College of Music and studied composition privately with Walter Piston.

Hired by Columbia Pictures in 1938, Mr. Gertz interrupted his work for service in the Army Signal Corps in World War II. Returning to the studio after the war, he studied with the composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Mr. Gertz is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Stadler; two daughters, Susie Anson and Madeleine Herron; and four grandchildren.

His filmography also includes many westerns, among them “Hell Bent for Leather” and “Hell Canyon Outlaws,” as well as “Top Gun,” “The Lone Gun,” “Gun Brothers,” “Gun Fury,” “Gun Belt,” “Gun for a Coward” and “Money, Women and Guns.”

Still other films on which Mr. Gertz worked, like “Francis Joins the WACS,” starring Donald O’Connor and Francis the Talking Mule, are beyond category.

@ all
At last the link summaries as of October 31 have been posted in the usual space.
I'd like to ask you to forgive me for not beeing as punctual as usual due to exceptional circumstances.
It's to be noted that October is a record month in terms of number of links. We achieved a total number of 527 links only for Filmscorium as opposed to 389 in September or 284 in August. The last month recording more links than the current one was September 2007 with 684 links. So it's nice to see that the crisis is not with us...
I'd like also to catch this opportunity to give you a reminder, in particular to the welcome and so productive newcomers.
If you appreciate what I'm doing you can be of a tremendous help to me in making sure that your links are clearly described with the album title and the artist(s) name(s), the way you would like them to be reported in the link lists I prepare.
In addition, if you use the hyper link technique, please report the complete link as the hyper link. Words like "here", or "click" oblige me to open the link to be able to copy and paste it. In this respect look at what filmpac is doing which is perfect for me.
Also, if you refer to a request, please repeat the album and artist name. If you just say, when answering the request, "here is what you wanted", it obliges me to go back to the request which sometimes was raised several days earlier, to identify the link.
So, you would oblige me by accepting to follow these little rules. It would save me a lot of time.
Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

I am here and always appreciative of your shares. 2nd in command ;)

@ isbum and all

Glad to know the score. I thought I was being ignored too.

Finally got our DSL up and running. Lord, what a difference!!! It now only takes an hour to download 100mb of stuff! If anyone is interested, I now have the Doctor Who Series 4 soundtrack, and would be happy to upload it for anyone who wants it.

Jim Barg said...

@isbum: Thanks right back at you.

@christine: Oh, pretty please. Having not seen Season 4 yet, I eagerly await picking up the DVD set next month. (I tend to wait until my b-day in January to make an annual Who DVD sale.)

OK, my first post! I hope it's of some interest. It is my goal to return some water to this incredible well of music I've been dipping into since yesterday!

Also, I do have a request (not sure if it goes here or the standard Franklynot forum): does anyone have Thomas Dolby's Gate To The Mind's Eye soundtrack from 1994?

Dunno if you'd call it sci-fi or not, but it's worth a shot. Thanks!

Greetings Earthlings, another request for a few ost's that have escaped my clutches. Perhaps some entity here can help?

Horror Express - John Cacavas
The Hills Have Eyes (1977) - Don Peake
Blue Sunshine - can't remember who does this but may have come with US DVD?

Thanks for your time,
Adam.

GSW said...

@adam - I can post HORROR EXPRESS for you. 10 tracks @ 320 paired with some Hans Salter tracks which I don't have.
or
A 9 track version paired with CRY OF THE BANSHEE/AN EVENING WITH POE @192. I do have all of these tracks. The 9 tracks are the same as the 10 tracks with one extra track. Which is your preference?

Spasmo Mixtape said...

Hi all - thanks to 'gsw'; you guys are bloody amazing!
Would love to hear it @320 with those Salter tracks- just like my old lp, which has long since been sold :( Very grateful if you could help Gsw!

@ all
Just to let you know that the link lists thru November are now posted.
It's a bit earlier than last month but still not quite what I want to achieve in terms of deadline.
Hope to do better next month in spite of the Christmas and New Year's Eve which may be hard to get over...

GSW said...

@adam - At the time I wrote my last post I had not been able to find the Salter tracks to go along with the Cacavas tracks. Good news is that I have found the Salter tracks! Forgive me but I am a bit disorganized at times. Actually the Salter music is a suite and not individual tracks.

Much thanks goes to the original uploader.

HORROR RHAPSODY - Hans J. Salter & John Cacavas (11@320) (includes 10 trks for HORROR EXPRESS/Cacavas and 1 suite by Salter of Universal Horror music)

Hi folks,

I'm looking for Stu Phillips's Battlestar Galactica ... BUT ... not the Varese/RNSO re-recording, and not the 4-CD anthology. I need the version originally released on LP (it did get a CD release although I've never located a copy).

Thanks so much!

scifisoundtrack said...

@ Story

It exists a CD release from the original LP. A german record company called Edel came out with that CD in 1995 or so. But i never saw this release in the internet.

Kind regards

Jim Barg said...

@mcc: Apologies for not getting back to you sooner (been a busy week), but I wanted to thank you for your offer, although I'll pass on it. (Was in a Dolby frame of mind, and the Gate release has been a difficult one to find online.)

@isbum: Thanks for the Buckaroo link!

@scifisoundtrack: Thanks for the information! I have never seen it turn up anywhere but I'll keep looking.
