Hello everybody & welcome to another month of fun, friends & music!

We're smack-dab in the middle of our Saturday Night Specials, so once I figure out how to set the February Archive up, you'll be able to back-track and find the SNS's that have been posted already.

Bear with me, Filmpac had to help me straighten that problem out last month.

"Airwolf The Wonderweapon" 2004 Cd @320
* I have no idea what this Cd was meant to be. On the ZYX Label Germany. I'd say it's a "tribute" album to the Television Series.
5 of the 11 tracks are credited to Sylvester Levay.
It's all electronic.

Welcome march, and welcome.......snow!

Anyway, just to give an update I am still looking for the Yosei Gorasu (or Gorath) OST but I've given up on Zdenek Liska's score for Baron Prasil. After heavy searching I've found out that Liska's widow has a tight rein on his music and she won't release many of his scores.

Also I'm trying to complete my Akira Ifukube collection. Would anyone have his OST for "The Mysterians"?

Ms Boricua said...

@ALL FRIENDS
(AKA: Isbumilites wandering in the wilderness of cyberspace)

As much as I would like to go out and buy new music to share with you all, it is neither economically or physically feasible. Which is probably as good a reason as any why I have contributed so many compilations such as the 14-Volume OVER THE TITLES and the series on movie OVERTURES. Of course, the 11-volume set of suites based on the soundtracks of Bernard Herrmann were a joyful labor of love.

I’m sure you all realize that for the most part I am repurposing and editing bits and pieces which come mainly from the thousands of contributors to the internet, including yourselves, along with some tracks from my own older library of records and CDs.

I’m not a big fan of reading books or listening to music on a computer. Although, I’ve just purchased my first Kindle and look forward to many hours of semi-electronic reading. And I don’t know if many others enjoy reading that way, but I figured one of the ways I could contribute here is to occasionally upload one of my previously published books for those who like to read. This isn’t an effort to sell books or even advertise my work, but solely a way to give something back to this sharing community that provides so much company.

“NIGHTANGEL” was not my first book, but it was the first time I have let my own writing get under my skin. I set out to write a book, which would give my readers the same experience I had when I read “The Exorcist,” and ended up scaring the hell out of myself.

It was mid-January and so cold outside you’d think small animals might freeze. I was writing a book about a Catholic priest who finds himself compelled to protect a teenage expectant mother of the possible antichrist. I had just written the line: “Do you think I want to have a battle of wits with The Lord Of The Flies?” when a noise drew me away from my computer, only to find the inside of the kitchen window covered with hundreds a buzzing flies. In the dead of winter. And the infestation lasted until I finished the book!

Hope those of you who enjoy reading have a good time with this:

Today's vintage vinyl double play is by Max Steiner. Beyond The Forest is pretty darn rare, released on Citadel from the Max Steiner Society. Thanks go to the original unknown rippers...

Max Steiner "Beyond The Forest" (1949), LP @320:

Max Steiner "Rome Adventure" (1962), LP @320:
http://rapidshare.com/files/199802862/MS-RomeAdventure.zip

A couple of specific requests:

@ keving - Could you please share the music from "For Love Or Country", by Arturo Sandoval? Can't find it anywhere.

@ john james - "Police Rescue" and "Bad Eggs" please? I meant to request these a while back, but they went out of my head until just now when I came across the covers again at the Arthouse.

@ pagemaster65 - Not sure you monitor this space, but if you do, could you please rip Elia Cmiral "Journey To The End Of The Night"? Or has this been a SNS already? Anyone else?

@ nightflyer - Now you've got your music wings hehe, may I request Stephen Endelman "Jeffrey"? Cover art was posted by you at the Arthouse.

Cheers good people, happy March and all that. May it grow warmer in your part of the world, and cooler in mine :)

PS. Ruggo, where's the score of the novel mate?

--mcc said...

Would anyone have a line on any sort of soundtrack to the Nicolas Roeg film, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (starring David Bowie, Candy Clark and Rip Torn)?

Never having seen it until tonight on DVD, the music struck me... but wikipedia states that not only has no soundtrack ever been released, there also might never be...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Fell_to_Earth_(film)

Can't help but wonder if some good natured fan has cobbled an unofficial one together. If so, I'd love to hear it. :)

GoblinScore said...

@mcc - aye, a film & score near and dear to my heart....no album, one almost happened from Eagle Records a few years back, cancelled due to not enough music (30mins. of John Phillips, not counting all the other odd pieces), and thanks to our friend Crispy32 and his killer blog:

http://reelcool.blogspot.com/2007/10/man-who-fell-to-earth-lost-soundtrack.html

this is all we have.
I would recommend looking for Stomu Yamashita's piece 'Wind Words' on other albums or on the Tempest soundtrack, as the version is here is WAY overmodulated. So, most of the Phillips pieces are still missing, but the above really fills a great gap...I hope I can hear that awesome, funky piece when Buck Henry takes a swan dive late in the picture someday!

@all soundtrackers....tomorrow at 5:15p USA West Coast time(?) Intrada is announcing:

1000 copy ltd. ed. MGM/UA Western
3000 copy 80's grail/long awaited title.

LMG said...

@ John James: Sorry, but it appears that I do not have the official 3-CD version of "Pennies from Heaven" -- it's a 24-track w/no cover but at 320, so I guess it's an unofficial compilation. If I ever come across it, I will post for you. Apologies!

Ruggo said...

@Parzival

I thank you for your interest and consideration. Much as yourself, I am hesitant to spend money on an author whom I haven't read and enjoyed before; and I therefore understand your reluctance to invest.

But with this small download, you need invest only time, not money. It is also my belief that you shouldn't read the whole book unless you are enjoying it. Thus, you have lost nothing by giving it a shot.

When I began writing I had no illusion that the process would result in fame and fortune (that is reserved for a very rare few). But it did result in great satisfaction and, hopefully, the enjoyment of my readers.

Should this prove to be semi-popular, I will gladly post more as we go along. No charge for my friends!

I confess, I am totally at a loss keeping up with the number of great posts both here, and in the other shops. I have a list of downloads to download out the wazoo. Not to mention the compulsory downloads that tie me up over at the Arthouse.

Some significant thanks in advance of listening:

@ pagemaster - For the requested Elia Cmiral.

@ keving - For Arturo Sandoval.

@ john james - For both my requests.

@ andreas & tlkjwe - For Jeffrey. No disrespect, but I note a very small filesize, leading me to conclude a small bitrate. Nightflyer, if you read this, can I put this request back up @320 please?

@ wild, Ms B & jura007 - Got a couple of yours pegged too.

Someone asked for this, hopefully you know who you are. Was it Gil, or Ms B? Never released officially, I found this labelled as a DVD rip, but it seems pretty darn good, no dialogue or SFX. All credit and thanks to the original unknown ripper dude or dudette...

Here's the 1965 US release of The Beatles album HELP! which includes some of Ken Thorne's instrumental cuts (PLUS that awesome twangy Bond-esque guitar intro on the title cut)

Southview212 said...

@Ruggo - An acetate is a transitional stage between the master tape and the finished vinyl record. Originally acetates were used for home recording in the days before tape recorders. A machine actually cuts the grooves into the acetate like a lathe. This can be computerized, or done manually by the engineer. From the 1930's to the early 1950's, before the intoduction of magnetic tape, recordings were often made directly to acetate discs, which then served as the master from which other discs were made. Acetates were also used as a storage medium for radio commercials; since commercials only run for a limited time it doesn't matter if the disc wears out relatively quickly. (Thanks to Jim for this explaination)

It's the orchestra performing the actual score for the movie. When the acetate (an actual record, not a tape) was completed, the recording was transfered to the film master.

I hope this answers your question

GilinAZ said...

Thanks for the acetate explanation. Film sound has always fascinated me (No, I wasn't around for "The Jazz Singer" debut, but sometimes it feels like it).

I was familiar with the 35mm magnetic strip and then the transition to optical. And now film soundtracks have become sonic wonders.

@GilinAZ - You are correct about Back Street being issued on an LP. Actually it was released on Decca in 1961. The Back Street I sent out is the original score from the 1941 movie. Debut album by Osibisa

How embarrassing! I thought it was the score! I've got to name these things better!

I'll get the music for you! Stand by!

@ Maimone Digital

Hey man absolutely no problem...I appreciate it.

@ christine cougar - I have absolutely no idea where I found Amazons, can only tell you it was quite some time ago. A very early Poledouris score, and damn nice it is too methinks, glad you liked.

@ score-bro & pagemaster - Thanks fellers for your shares, I been tied up a couple of days, will grab them soon!

@ madman - Any reason why Great White & Razorback need be a SNS? Both have been out for a heckuva long time. PS. Think I'd back Razorback in a fight :)

@ keving - Having already sampled the artwork, my Raskin box awaits. For a feller who had sod-all released, this promises to be an amazing set. Thank you HEAPS in advance for sharing it :))

@ budarc - I learnt a long time ago to never say never, its amazing what things turn up. Good luck in your search. But I have to wonder, considering Mr Bean was almost a silent comedy, did it have music? And if so, I guess it should be pretty easy to rip :)

@ barzacula - Welcome back, and thanks for all the pristine John Scotts! Dare I ask for artwork?

@ maimone - Kinda pointless me mentioning artwork is available from the Artwork Department then, hey ;)

Suppose I better toss some music out, hey! The first is a promo of what is mostly trailer music, and comes with a hearty Filmpac recommendation. The second is vintage vinyl, and an absolute classic.

David Raksin box set! I'm salivating so much I may have to start an IV to rehydrate.

@filmpac

Thanks for latest shares. I have to admit that I have never seen an actual promo. Where exactly do these things come from and how do you get them? Do you have to somehow know someone who knows someone who knows something?

GilinAZ said...

Does anyone happen to have Hugo Friedhofer's "One Eyed Jacks"? I checked Josereal's site, and he has everything but...

Gil

filmpac said...

@ ruggo - Promos are released for, um, er... promotional purposes.

They are usually releaed by the composer himself, or his management, or his sister's auntie's uncle's cousin. Some composers have even made a career of these, John Scott and Michael J. Lewis are two who spring to mind. More recently, David Newman and John Debney seem to have a heckuva lot, as do many others.

I can only assume these come about because the powers that be deem it unworthy of an official release. Does this make them any less interesting? Heck no, in many cases they contain even more music than is available (or would have been available, had they released it) on the official release.

But I note your point, you have never actually seen one. Truth be told, neither have I. But I can only assume they exist, since a) I am listening to it right now, b) you could be soon too, and c) it even comes with artwork.

Does that help any?

@ gilinAZ - Of course we do. As much as we like Josereal, the phoenix of bloggers, he ain't the be-all and end-all ;)

GilinAZ said...

Filmpac....I was reading something, on the Net, saying "try to find the U.A. version, of "One-Eyed Jacks", if you can. Just wondered what was the difference between this and the original Liberty LP version?

You're welcome. I found both the movie and the score mediocre at best. Only the movie had Eliza Dushku. That was a plus ;-)

@ filmpac

You're absolutely right. After my last big effort in DVD ripping, maybe I need a new project. I think I'm a bit more seasoned now to try and attempt something like that. Hell, I could rip anything and everything! At this point, music and sound effects is better than no music at all!

Thanks for the suggestion, pac-man. Sometimes it takes someone else's input to put things into perspective for you... ;)

Southview212 said...

@GilinAZ - If you would like, I can send a copy of "One Eyed Jacks" @320. I actually own the original Tsunami issue. It has really nice sound and good artwork. Let me know.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Bolt promo if anyone's interested.

@ all David Raksin adherents,

I’d like to suggest, as a complement to KevinG’s box set of David Raksin’s scores (thank you so much, Kevin), also listening to this lecture:

David Raksin, Speaking Of Music at the Exploratorium in 1988 (January 28, 1988) - interviewed by Charles Amirkhanian at the Exploratorium's Speaking of Music Series in San Francisco, January 28, 1988.

Composer David Raksin died at 92 in August 2004. As a memorial tribute, Other Minds presents his appearance in front of a live audience at the Speaking of Music series in San Francisco. Raksin is interviewed by Charles Amirkhanian and takes questions from the audience. Perhaps the greatest film music composer of the 20th Century, Raksin discusses his work on Laura, The Bad and the Beautiful and other motion pictures, his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, and his efforts to document and preserve the history of film music. Raksin's rapier wit is everywhere in evidence and makes for a most entertaining evening (or whenever you are listening to it).

It is available both in streaming format and also to download here:
