Here's a little something.

The Piano Sings @ AAC 256 VBR, a piano compilation containing selections of Michael Nyman's best film music.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3NJMC301

Track list:

1. Diary of Love (The End of the Affair)
2. If (The Diary of Anne Frank)
3. Franklyn (Wonderland)
4. The Morrow (Gattaca)
5. Jack (Wonderland)
6. The Heart Asks Pleasure First (The Piano)
7. Big My Secret (The Piano)
8. Debbie (Wonderland)
9. The Departure (Gattaca)
10. Why (The Diary of Anne Frank)
11. Odessa Beach (Man With A Movie Camera)
12. Lost and Found (The Piano)
13. The Exchange (The Claim)
14. Candlefire (The Diary of Anne Frank)
15. All Imperfect Things (The Piano)
16. Diary of Love [reprise] (The End of the Affair)

I'm an unmitigated novice with regard to ripping CDs and know little about those (slightly) esoteric terms like AAC, lossless, VBR etc. I've never done this kind of thing before so forgive me if the audio quality leaves something to be desired.

Georges Delerue coming up later on.

@ Rebecca - Warm welcome!

I'll be taking this! Gratefully your Piano/Nyman shall become partly mine too.

The AAC @256 VBR is an excellent start.

BTW, listened to Police Academy and I'm quite sure that
the source of your rip is VBR, so not a "true 320".
Just want to inform you...
but thanks for this try as well!

@all

Does anyone happen to have a copy of Hans Zimmer's score to Prince of Egypt? I have one track entitled "The Vision" from I believe one of Ruggo's fine compilations. I know there are several pop song releases to that film, but I would love just the Zimmer score if anyone knows of it. Thanks!!

@ isbum

Take a tip from an older guy and do as I do:

Open a new document in Word and name it Music To Download or something similar. Keep this file permanently. When you see something here, or for that matter anywhere else, that you know you want to download but cannot do it at the time, simply copy and paste the description and links to your document for downloading at your leisure.

This takes no time at all to do and it saves a lot of brain-racking later.

When you've finished downloading, you can simply delete that particular info from your document.

On the subject of Mancini, I wondered if there was a compilation of some kind of his rarer songs. Stuff like the ones from the Pink Panther movies: "Until You Love Me" (sung by a transvestite, if you remember!); "Come to Me" (sung by Tom Jones in a bit of an over the top way).

Steven64 said...

There've been a couple really cool Star Wars-y things posted over at Cloud 9 recently, and I'm gonna post this there too. But I also wanted to stick it in here for "maximum exposure", as it were.

My dad got me this vinyl in Singapore when our family lived in Jakarta back when Star Wars first came out in '77. In hindsight, it was probably a little cheesy, but I loved it. And I still do! "Side A" is a multi part disco-fied Star Wars suite which, in and of itself, is pretty fun. But "Side B" was, for me, the highlight. It's an 11-minute percussion heavy instrumental that has nothing whatsoever to do with Star Wars. But the arrangement and performance are amazing. It's like a top-notch college marching band with a killer drumline (think Grambling or USC) in a studio with a great producer.

Anyway, I found it on CD a few years ago and here it is:

"Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk" by Meco (yep, Meco!)

@ All -

I was saving this for Veteran's Day, but I am now working on another project for that.

The Victory at Sea series has always occupied a very special spot in my musical soul. I can remember hearing it when I
was a child, in 1959. I later saw the series as a young teenager, and went about collecting the three albums. I even had the eight track tapes, that I would listen to while on a long commute from my home in New Hampshire to a job that I had
in Maine as a young adult. Which gave me the time to become completely involved in the recordings. Then came cassette tapes, and the lps went onto them.

Then, in 2000, the music came out on CD. " Great!" I thought, and I got them, and, well, I was a bit disapointed with them. I did not like the remix that was done.

Fast-forward to 2009. A friend that I know had stated to me that he had come across the 3-lp set, at a swap meet.

"One dealer had a box set of VICTORY AT SEA. No, no, not the Readers Digest box set which is NOT actually VAS. This one was a large, dark blue plan box with the title on the front: VICTORY AT SEA, MASTER RECORDINGS. This is a three LP set containing the music as found on the original RCA lps. But these were taken directly from the master recordings and recorded at 1/2 speed. This kind of recording was considered the premier of lp recordings. They were done in true stereo. The set states "limited edition", but nothing to indicated just how limited. I have been researching it and so far have found only one mention of this set but no details at all. First time I've ever seen one, let alone heard about it. This is a near pristine set. I'm not sure if anyone ever played it more than once or twice. You ever heard anything about this set? My own contacts claim no knowledge of it. It is not a bootleg. Its a real release from RCA but oddly, no RCA label on the box itself. Only on the albums. The label on the records is also different from the label on the regular release lps."

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, Original Master Recordings, Limited Edition

MFSL 3LP Set, 3-150-1,2,3, Stereo, 198X, 1/2 SP Remastering from RCA Master Tapes

So, my friend made copies, and this is what you have. I pulled what I found on the web for artwork, and hopefully, those of you that are more computer savvy can make up some decent covers for them. I also did some research, and those comments are in the file as well.

These are JUST AS I REMEMBER THEM.

Truly a great example of symphonic music writing. These tracks have been ripped at 320, and if anyone wants to play with

them through Audacity or another program and shine 'em up, have at it!

But Enjoy, All!

I remember a while back you telling us about these LP's. I had forgotten about them.

I don't rememeber if we in the UK ever saw a full run of VAS, but I do know of it through musical snippets that have popped up from time to time - including a short piece from Readers Digest.

It would be an honour to download these shares from you.

On Sunday (Nov. 8th) at 11.00am we too (as ever on the Sunday nearest to the 11th day, of the 11th month,) shall commemorate those who died, and continue to die, for our Country, & to defeat the forces of evil - in what ever guise the manifest themselves.

Hay, lets not dwell too long on war! Cheers Colonel, looking forwards to hearing these recordings, & thanks for taking the time & effort.

@ All - If you are (like me) unfamiliar with some composers complete works, Jean is offering some fantastic compilations dedicated to
Joel McNeely
Michael J. Lewis
Trevor Jones
James Newton Howard
Alan Silvestri
Trevor Rabin & Bill Conti

I've often found that a single score will turn me into a fan of a composer. Jean's compilations offer that opportunity to find a key score that unlocks a desire to hear more from these composers.

They are banquet's for your ears, don't miss out!

And let Jean know you appreciate them, please.

http://forums.ffshrine.org/showthread.php?t=68769&highlight=inglourious+basterds

Since that thread started there's been a torrent upped by "Physiux" that seems to have 26 of the 27 tracks. Unfortunately I've not been able to get hold of it - no seeds on a somewhat obscure tracker or on the DHT. I'll keep trying though and I'm sure something else will turn up in the future.

Here's one of those cross-over albums that pop up...

The 'Battle of the Atlantic Suite' appeared on disc in the mid 1990's, I believe as a concert piece, so it should go in the Classical Music Hall 'shop', but parts have been used as background music, certainly here in the UK, by independant TV companies that have produced WWII documentaries on the Battle of the Atlantic, so it deserves a place here.

What does one do? I've put links here & in the other place :)

The "Battle of the Atlanic Suite" by Dave Roylance & Bob Galvin.

The opening main title is great...but why do all Christmas movies need to have a Christmas carol ("Deck The Halls", "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen", etc.)inserted? Can't composers come up with something that "sounds Christmasy", without having to use Christmas carols??

Steven64: Thanks for Zimmer's 'Rain Man' sessions--just great--emblematic not only of a certain period for Zimmer, but film scoring in general. Affecting and underrated. Appreciate the posting and inserted art.

And much thanks to Isbum, for the platform.

PLEASE a request for:
"Another 48 hours - original Soundtrack." This is impossible to find. I have the James Horner score tracks, as posted on here already, which are super. The songs from Another 48 Hrs could round things off nicely.
THX in advance.
